Exodus 32-34 Golden Calf And Glory of God

Psalm 15:1-5 Abiding with the God of Truth
15:1 “Yahweh, who shall dwell in Your sanctuary? Who shall live on Your holy hill? 2 He who walks blamelessly, does what is right, and speaks truth in/from his heart3 He who doesn't slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor casts slurs against his fellow man; 4 In whose eyes a vile man is despised, but who honors those who fear Yahweh; he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and doesn't change; 5 he who doesn't lend out his money for usury, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken.”

Observation: 15:1-2 If you want to live in the Shadow of the Almighty, you need to not do wrong, proactively do right, and have Truth at the core of your being.
15:3-5 Make a list of some of those do's and don'ts.
15:4 To think well of vile men is to be better than God.

Application: Abiding in God starts with Truth, which overflows into our words and deeds.

Prayer: Lord, I want an abiding, intimate relationship with You; help me do what it takes. Amen.

Proverbs 4:20-23 Wellspring of the Word
4:20 “My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

Observations: 4:20-23 The reader is exhorted to pay attention to wise words, keep them in front of them, and have them guide decisions (the heart was where decisions are made in Hebrew thought). Decisions are made in accord with our value system, which must be formed by God's word if we wish to experience the abundant life (rather than abundant or meager death). Keeping our heart set in the right direction is crucial for that is what waters the rest of our life.

Application: Focusing our mind, will, emotions and strength on God's Revelation results in life; develop the daily habit of storing up God's truth in Your heart.

Prayer: Lord, help me learn, understand, and value Your word, so I can make decisions that are pleasing to both You and me. Amen.

Exodus 32-34 The Covenant gets broken and renewed.

Exodus 32 False God's and Excuses, but True Forgiveness

32:1 "When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, "Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don`t know what has become of him." 2 Aaron said to them, "Take off the golden rings, which are in the ears...4 He received what they handed him, and fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a molten calf; and they said, "These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt." 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, "Tomorrow shall be a feast to Yahweh." 6 They rose up early on the next day, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
7 Yahweh spoke to Moses, "Go, get down; for your people, who you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves! 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed to land of Egypt.`" 9 Yahweh said to Moses, "I have seen these people, and, behold, they are a stiff-necked people. 10 Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation." 11 Moses begged Yahweh his God, and said, "Yahweh, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, `He brought them forth for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth?` Turn from your fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, `I will multiply your seed as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your seed, and they shall inherit it forever.`" 14 Yahweh repented of the evil which he said he would do to his people. 15 Moses turned, and went down from the mountain, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand...16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tables.
19 It happened, as soon as he came near to the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing: and Moses` anger grew hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mountain. 20 He took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it. 21 Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people to you, that you have brought a great sin on them?" 22 Aaron said, "Don`t let the anger of my lord grow hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. 24...I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf."

25 When Moses saw that the people had broken loose, (for Aaron had let them loose for a derision among their enemies,) 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, "Whoever is on Yahweh`s side, come to me!" All the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 He said to them, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, `Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and every man kill his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor." 28 The sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men. 29 Moses said, "Consecrate yourselves today to Yahweh, yes, every man against his son, and against his brother; that he may bestow on you a blessing this day." 30 It happened on the next day, that Moses said to the people, "You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to Yahweh. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin." 31 Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, "Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold. 32 Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin-- and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written." 33 Yahweh said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. 34 Now go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin." 35 Yahweh struck the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made."

Observations: 32:1 How soon we forget.
32:6 Israel's “worship” matches Egypt's celebration of the feast of Apis the Bull, described by Heredotus. See Digging Deeper. God is very explicit about the kind of worship He accepts. Hint: "It's not pagan worship."
32:11 Moses turns down the opportunity to become as great as Abraham because he is concerned about God's glory and reputation.
32:24 Conflicts with 32:2, but see Digging Deeper.
32:26 The sons of Levi (Moses' and Aaron's kinsmen) reverse the curse of Jacob (Genesis 49) by demonstrating loyalty to Yahweh at the expense of the disobedient Israelites.
32:33 Apparently those more active in the rebellion suffered death, while God pardoned the “me-too” general population. Blotting out from God's book is probably not a good thing. We're not told what book, but appears to be that listing of the righteous who would participate in His rule. (Psalm 69:28; Isaiah 4:3; Ezekiel 13:9, Daniel 12:1)

Application: Loyalty to God and His promises results in blessings; disloyalty, in death. Choose your consequences.

Prayer: Lord, may I always live in such a way that I give You pleasure, rather than provoking You to anger, even if it costs me my life. Amen.

Exodus 33 Favor With God
33:1 "Yahweh spoke to Moses, "Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, `I will give it to your seed.` 2 I will send an angel before you; and I will drive out the Canaanite...3 to a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of you, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you in the way." 4 When the people heard this evil news, they mourned: and no one put on his jewelry. 5 Yahweh said to Moses, "Tell the children of Israel, `You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go up into your midst for one moment, I would consume you. 9 It happened, when Moses entered into the Tent, that the pillar of cloud descended, stood at the door of the Tent, and spoke with Moses. 10 All the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the Tent, and all the people rose up and worshipped, everyone at their tent door. 11 Yahweh spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, didn`t depart out of the Tent. 12 Moses said to Yahweh, "Behold, you tell me, `Bring up this people:` and you haven`t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, `I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.` 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight: and consider that this nation is your people." 14 He said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." 15 He said to him, "If your presence doesn`t go with me, don`t carry us up from here. 16 For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn`t it in that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?" 17 Yahweh said to Moses, "I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name." 18 He said, "Please show me your GLORY." 19 He said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of Yahweh before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy." 20 He said, "You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live." 21 Yahweh also said, "Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23 then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen."

Observations: 33:2-3 God wants to send an angel to guide them since, if He were in their midst, He would consume them when confronted with their rebellious disobedience.
33:11 Want to know why Joshua was successful?
33:16-18 Moses pleads with God to go with them, appealing again to God's promises, and God relents. Moses asks to see God's glory as a reassurance or token, which leads us to conclude that he hadn't seen it on the mountain.
33:20 The Hebrew word for “face” is usually translated “before” or “in the presence of.” Previous reference 33:11 to seeing God's face must have occurred with God veiling His glory.

Application: Like Moses and Joshua, we should persist in seeking Him until we get as much of God as possible.

Prayer: Gracious and Merciful God, thank you for making it possible to find favor in your sight; may I do so.   Amen.

Exodus 34 Glory and Guilty and Glistening
34:1 "Yahweh said to Moses, "Chisel two stone tablets like the first: and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 5 Yahweh descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the NAME of Yahweh. 6 Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, "Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in hesed/loyal love and faithfulness/truth, 7 keeping hesed/loyal love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and disobedience and sin; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the children`s children, on the third and on the fourth generation." 8 Moses hurried and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped. 9 He said, "If now I have found favor in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us; although this is a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance." 10 He said, "Behold, I make a covenant: before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been worked in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among which you are shall see the work of Yahweh; for it is an awesome thing that I do with you. 11 Observe that which I command you this day. Behold, I drive out before you the Amorite, the Canaanite...12 Be careful, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be for a snare in the midst of you: 13 but you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and you shall cut down their Asherim; 14 for you shall worship no other god: for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. 15 Don`t make a covenant (or marriage) with the inhabitants of the land, lest they play the prostitute after their gods 17 no idols 18 keep the feast of unleavened 19 firstborn...mine. 20..No one shall appear before me empty. 21 seventh day you shall rest 22 feast of weeks the feast of harvest 23 Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord Yahweh, the God of Israel.
24 For I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your borders 25 "You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover be left to the morning. 26 You shall bring the first of the firstfruits of your ground to the house of Yahweh your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother`s milk." 27 Yahweh said to Moses, "Write you these words: for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." 28 He was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread, nor drank water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. 29 Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in Moses` hand, when he came down from the mountain, that Moses didn`t know that the skin of his face shone by reason of his speaking with him. 32 Afterward all the children of Israel came near, and he gave them all of the commandments that Yahweh had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses was done speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. 34 But when Moses went in before Yahweh to speak with him, he took the veil off; and he came out, and spoke to the children of Israel that which he was commanded. 35 The children of Israel saw Moses' face, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him."

Observations: 34:1 Moses rechisels, God rewrites.
34:6-7 Coupled with 33:18-19 this is the most definitive statement of God's person and glory in the Scriptures. See "God in a Nutshell" below. God does not stop being just to be loving (Romans 3:25-26). To worship a God who is only loving or only just is to worship a false God.
34:9 Moses uses his favor in God's sight to intercede for Israel, asking God to pardon, accept and bless them.
34:14 God is allowed to be jealous, since He makes the rules. We can't. He next repeats, for the most part, previously mentioned commands dealing with the “religious” commandments.
34:26 Half of a verse, forbidding a pagan Canaanite cultic practice (mentioned in a Ugaritic text, is used to estabish the Kosher meat-dairy restriction.
34:29 If you want to know why Michelangelo and others depict Moses with “horns”, it's because Jerome, in the Latin Vulgate, mistranslated shone/radiant as “horned.” Poor Moses, as if didn't have enough problems with Israel and God...

Application: We need to take steps to insure that we don't repeat our sin.

Prayer: God who gives second chances, may I never take You for granted, but learn from my mistakes, so I can better obey You. Amen.

Digging Deeper:
32:24 Conflicts with 32:2, but Aaron's account might not be a complete fabrication. The Egyptians summoned from the dead (with music, sacrifice and rituals) the gods who had delivered them, in order to honor them. The calf of the Apis Bull was linked with the reincarnation of Ptah, the creator, who becomes Osiris, the lord of the dead. His sister Isis who brings him back to life, wears a headdress of a sun disk between the horns of a bull. One would expect demonic forces to be active against Israel so they wouldn't glorify the True God, but the text doesn't explicitly say so.

God in a nutshell: God exerts His rule and authority in being merciful and gracious, patient and abundant in loyalty and faithfulness, showing hesed to a 1000 generations (of those who love Him and keep His commands – added in Deuteronomy 5:10), yet exercising His justice in punishing the guilty. He is jealous for our loyalty and gets angry over our sins, pardons, yet  punishes with consequences and separation. His ears are open to our pleas. He is very explicit about the kind of worship He wants.

Us in a nutshell: We tend not to be very faithful unless we work at it. We often need immediate gratification and assurances unless we've developed self-control to avoid short-cuts and wait for God to fulfill His promises. We will suffer punishment and consequences for our sins, which could include missing out on God's presence and promises, even though redeemed and forgiven/pardoned. We have the capacity to have an intimate relationship with God.

Where to Go for More:

Exodus 11-14 Yahweh Wins the Battle of the Gods; Let's Party

Psalm 12:1-5 Who Owns Your Lips?
12:1 “Help, Yahweh; for the godly man ceases. For the faithful fail from among the children of men. 2 Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart. 3 May Yahweh cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts, 4 who have said, "With our tongue we will prevail. Our lips are our own. Who is lord over us?" 5 "Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says Yahweh; "I will set him in safety from those who malign him."“

Observation: Self-centered speech isn't pretty. Even worse when it oppresses others to gain worth and value. God knows how to protect His servants when others malign and slander the faithful.
Matthew 12:36 "I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment."
Application: When you encounter evil and lying people, groan to God, who will protect you.

Prayer: Lord, I trust in Your protection, set a guard over me and my mouth. Amen.

Proverbs 4:1-4 Selling Life Assurance
4:1 “1 Listen, sons, to a father's instruction. Pay attention and know understanding; 2 for I give you sound learning. Don't forsake my law. 3 For I was a son to my father, tender and an only child in the sight of my mother. 4 He taught me, and said to me: "Let your heart retain my words. Keep my commandments, and live. 7 Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom..."

Observations: A parent/father always has to sell their kids on what's right. With a reasonable faith based on God's revelation, and rules that are in the child's best interest, that's easy (especially when compared to the heartbreak of the alternative). The appeal is not just to the mind, but the heart, the place where values reside and decisions are made.

Application: What are you passing on to others? Pious sounding platitudes or Truth that gives the abundant life?

Prayer: Heavenly Father thank You for communicating Your law to me, may I be faithful to communicate it by my words and life to others. Amen.

Exodus 11-14 Final Plague, Passover, Exit

Exodus 11 Favor and Firstborns

11:1 "Yahweh said to Moses, "Yet one plague more will I bring on Pharaoh, and on Egypt; afterwards he will let you go...2..let them ask every man/woman of his/her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold." 3 Yahweh gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh`s servants, and in the sight of the people. 4 Moses said, "This is what Yahweh says: `About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt, 5 and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne...servant...cattle. 7 But against any of the children of Israel a dog won`t even bark...that you may know that Yahweh makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel. 9 Yahweh said to Moses, "Pharaoh won`t listen to you, that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt." 10 Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, and Yahweh hardened Pharaoh`s heart, and he didn`t let the children of Israel go out of his land."

Observations: 11:2-3 Even though you'd think the Egyptians would hate the Israelites, God changed their hearts to enrich His people (so they could enrich Him in the building of the Tabernacle).
11:9 God is intent about glorifying Himself for the benefit of the world, not just about making our lives comfortable. In fact, as His servants, we will be uncomfortable (count on it) but enriched.
Hebrews 11:27 "By faith, he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him Who is invisible."
Application: If you don't obey and ask, you don't get.

Prayer: God, thanks that You can change hearts, so I can do what You require of me to accomplish Your purposes. Amen.

Exodus 12 Preparing for the Passover
12:1 "Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2 "This month shall be to you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year to you...5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats: 6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at evening. 7 They shall take same of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and on the lintel, on the houses in which they shall eat it. 8 They shall eat the flesh in that night, roasted with fire, and unleavened bread. They shall eat it with bitter herbs. 11 This is how you shall eat it: with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste: it is Yahweh`s Passover. 12 For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and animal. Against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am Yahweh. 13 The blood shall be to you for a token on the houses where you are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be on you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. 15 Seven days shall you eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away yeast out of your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 24 You shall observe this thing for an ordinance to you and to your sons forever. 26 It will happen, when your children ask you, `What d o you mean by this service?` 27 that you shall say, `It is the sacrifice of Yahweh`s Passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians, and spared our houses.`" The people bowed their heads and worshipped. 28 The children of Israel went and did so; as Yahweh had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.

29 It happened at midnight, that Yahweh struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. 31 He called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, "Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel; and go, serve Yahweh, as you have said! 32 Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone; and bless me also!"
35 The children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they asked of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing. 36 Yahweh gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. They despoiled the Egyptians. 37 The children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot who were men, besides children. 38 A mixed multitude went up also with them, with flocks, herds, and even very much cattle. 40 Now the time that the children of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred thirty years. 41 It happened at the end of four hundred thirty years, even the same day it happened, that all the hosts of Yahweh went out from the land of Egypt. 46 In one house shall it be eaten; you shall not carry forth anything of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall you break a bone of it. 47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48 When a stranger shall sojourn with you, and will keep the Passover to Yahweh, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one who is born in the land: but no uncircumcised person shall eat of it. 49 One law shall be to him who is born at home, and to the stranger who sojourns among you."

Observations: 12:12 It's not just about the Israelites, but about God's glory.
12:13 No blood, no judgment Pass-over. Obedience was needed to apply the blood as specified.
12:15 No obedience no blessing (even in something as insignificant as bread). Yeast is a symbol of sin which spreads and takes over its host.
12:29 The firstborn of Pharaoh was the next god in line to protect Egypt.
12:32 Pharaoh finally agrees to all God's stipulations, and asks for a blessing!
12:41 God had this planned to the day, to keep His word to Abe. How did He know that? The Scriptures don't tell us. It probably has something to do with being Omniscient and outside of time. The Scriptures do tell us that Pharaoh was responsible for his choices and reaped the consequences of His stubborn, rebellious choices. That is abundantly clear.

Application: Despite "delays" God's timetable was to the day.

Prayer: God who delivers and is never late, help me focus on what You've told me to do, and leave the timing to You. Amen.

Exodus 13 Remember to Remember

13:1 "Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Sanctify to me all of the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of animal. It is mine." 5 It shall be, when Yahweh shall bring you into the land of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month. 9 It shall be for a sign to you on your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, that the law of Yahweh may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand Yahweh has brought you out of Egypt. 14 It shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, `What is this?` that you shall tell him, `By strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage; 15 and it happened, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that Yahweh killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of animal. Therefore I sacrifice to Yahweh all that opens the womb, being males; but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.`

17 When Pharaoh had let the people go, God didn`t lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, "Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and they return to Egypt;" 18 but God led the people around by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea; and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt. 19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you." 21 Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night: 22 the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, didn`t depart from before the people."

Observations: 13:9 The purpose of the ritual is to memorialize (keep in memory) what God had done (delivered and judged rebellion and disobedience to His will) so that Israel would obey. It was also a perpetual reminder that God owns it all, including us.
13:16 To redeem was to buy back from the slated sacrifice/destruction.
13:17 Sometimes God's will is the long way around for our protection. He knows what's best; do it His way.
13:19 Joseph's faith was vindicated and serves as a reminder that God keeps His promises.
13:21 God protects (cloud) and guides (fire) so we can follow Him, day or night.

Application: How do God's promises affect your behavior?
Hebrews 11:28 By faith, he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.
Prayer: O God who keeps His promises, I promise to always remember what You have done, and give You all that is Yours. Amen.

Exodus 14 God Washes Problems Away
14:3 "Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, `They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.` 4 I will harden Pharaoh`s heart, and he will follow after them; and I will get honor over Pharaoh, and over all his host; and the Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh." They did so. 5 It was told the king of Egypt that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed towards the people, and they said, "What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?" 8 Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel...10...The children of Israel cried out to Yahweh. 11 They said to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us forth out of Egypt? 12 Isn`t this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, `Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?` For it were better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness." 13 Moses said to the people, "Don`t be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will work for you today: for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall never see them again. 17 I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them: and I will get myself honor over Pharaoh, and over all his host, over his chariots, and over his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh..." 19 The angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them. 20 It came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the cloud and the darkness, yet gave it light by night: and the one didn`t come near the other all the night. 21 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all the night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 The children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued...25 He took off their chariot wheels..."Let`s flee from the face of Israel, for Yahweh fights for them against the Egyptians!" 26 Yahweh said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen." 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea...28 The waters returned, and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even all Pharaoh`s army that went in after them into the sea. There remained not so much as one of them. 29 But the children of Israel walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left. 30 Thus Yahweh saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel saw the great work which Yahweh did to the Egyptians, and the people feared Yahweh; and they believed in Yahweh, and in His servant Moses."

Observations: 14:5 Note Pharaoh's self-serving value system which caused him to change his heart. God then hardened it.
14:12 Note the people's self-serving/protecting value system. They didn't value freedom nor serving God. Yet God still graciously hears them and saves them. The people also failed to believe all of God's promise, that they would serve Him. (But then they do provide comic relief 14:11 -no graves.)
14:13 They just had to stand (not run away) and then walk.

14:31 About time; Israel fears and believes God. Let's see how long this lasts.

Application: Fear of man and faith in God don't walk together. Fear causes us to do stupid things. Faith causes God to save us and bless us, the better choice.
Hebrews 11:29 "By faith, they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up."
Prayer: O God who triumphs gloriously, keep in my memory who You are and what You do, so I will never doubt Your ability to protect and bless me. Amen.

Digging Deeper:

God in a nutshell: God wants His people to worship Him, and will display His glory to the world in the process. He has a plan and a timetable, and works all things together for the good of His people, even the bad and the ugly, the mundane and the miraculous; He uses our obedience as the means of providing protection and prizes (Egyptian gold).

Us in a nutshell: To experience God's benefits, we must do what He says, as revealed in His word. We forfeit blessings and peace when we fear anything other than God, and fail to obey. We tend to focus on immediate relief, preferring even slavery to the far more beneficial sonship.

I realize there is controversy surrounding one of the individuals cited in the article, but on the whole, it is well reasoned.

Exodus 11-14 (complete text)
Exodus 11
11:1 "Yahweh said to Moses, "Yet one plague more will I bring on Pharaoh, and on Egypt; afterwards he will let you go. When he lets you go, he will surely thrust you out altogether. 2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let them ask every man of his neighbor, and every woman of her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold." 3 Yahweh gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh`s servants, and in the sight of the people. 4 Moses said, "This is what Yahweh says: `About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt, 5 and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the maid-servant who is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of cattle. 6 There shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been, nor shall be any more. 7 But against any of the children of Israel a dog won`t even bark or move its tongue, against man or animal; that you may know that Yahweh makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel. 8 All these your servants shall come down to me, and bow down themselves to me, saying, `Get out, and all the people who follow you; and after that I will go out.`" He went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

Exodus 12
12:1 "Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2 "This month shall be to you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year to you. 3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, `On the tenth day of this month, they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers` houses, a lamb for a household; 4 and if the household be too little for a lamb, then he and his neighbor next to his house shall take one according to the number of the souls; according to everyone can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. 9 Don`t eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted with fire; with its head, its legs and its inner parts. 10 You shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; but that which remains of it until the morning you shall burn with fire. 14 This day shall be to you for a memorial, and you shall keep it a feast to Yahweh: throughout your generations you shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever. 15 Seven days shall you eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away yeast out of your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 16 In the first day there shall be to you a holy convocation, and in the seventh day a holy convocation; no manner of work shall be done in them, except that which every man must eat, that only may be done by you. 17 You shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this same day have I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall you observe this day throughout your generations by an ordinance forever. 18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty first day of the month at evening. 19 Seven days shall there be no yeast found in your houses, for whoever eats that which is leavened, that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a sojourner, or one who is born in the land. 20 You shall eat nothing leavened. In all your habitations you shall eat unleavened bread.`" 21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said to them, "Draw out, and take lambs according to your families, and kill the Passover. 22 You shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side -posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For Yahweh will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when he sees the blood on the lintel, and on the two side-posts, Yahweh will pass over the door, and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to strike you. 24 You shall observe this thing for an ordinance to you and to your sons forever. 25 It shall happen when you have come to the land which Yahweh will give you, according as he has promised, that you shall keep this service. 26 It will happen, when your children ask you, `What do you mean by this service?` 27 that you shall say, `It is the sacrifice of Yahweh`s Passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians, and spared our houses.`" The people bowed their heads and worshipped. 30 Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead. 31 He called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, "Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel; and go, serve Yahweh, as you have said! 32 Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone; and bless me also!" 33 The Egyptians were urgent with the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, "We are all dead men." 34 The people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes on their shoulders. 39 They baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt; for it wasn`t leavened, because they were thrust out of Egypt, and couldn`t wait, neither had they prepared for themselves any food. 40 Now the time that the children of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred thirty years. 41 It happened at the end of four hundred thirty years, even the same day it happened, that all the hosts of Yahweh went out from the land of Egypt. 42 It is a night to be much observed to Yahweh for bringing them out from the land of Egypt. This is that night of Yahweh, to be much observed of all the children of Israel throughout their generations. 43 Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, "This is the ordinance of the Passover. There shall no foreigner eat of it, 44 but every man`s servant who is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then shall he eat of it. 45 A sojourner and a hired servant shall not eat of it. 49 One law shall be to him who is born at home, and to the stranger who sojourns among you." 50 Thus did all the children of Israel. As Yahweh commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. 51 It happened the same day, that Yahweh brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts."

Exodus 13
13:1 "Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Sanctify to me all of the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of animal. It is mine." 3 Moses said to the people, "Remember this day, in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 This day you go forth in the month Abib. 5 It shall be, when Yahweh shall bring you into the land of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to Yahweh. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and no leavened bread shall be seen with you, neither shall there be yeast seen with you, in all your borders. 8 You shall tell your son in that day, saying, `It is because of that which Yahweh did for me when I came forth out of Egypt.` 9 It shall be for a sign to you on your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, that the law of Yahweh may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand Yahweh has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year. 11 "It shall be, when Yahweh shall bring you into the land of the Canaanite, as he swore to you and to your fathers, and shall give it you, 12 that you shall set apart to Yahweh all that opens the womb, and every firstborn which you have that comes from an animal. The males shall be Yahweh`s. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and you shall redeem all the firstborn of man among your sons. Therefore I sacrifice to Yahweh all that opens the womb, being males; but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.` 16 It shall be for a sign on your hand, and for symbols between your eyes: for by strength of hand Yahweh brought us forth out of Egypt." 17 It happened, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God didn`t lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, "Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and they return to Egypt;" 18 but God led the people around by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea; and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt. 19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you." 20 They took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. 21 Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night: 22 the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, didn`t depart from before the people."

Exodus 14
14:1 "Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Speak to the children of Israel, that they turn back and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon. You shall encamp opposite it by the sea. 3 Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, `They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.` 4 I will harden Pharaoh`s heart, and he will follow after them; and I will get honor over Pharaoh, and over all his host; and the Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh." They did so. 5 It was told the king of Egypt that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed towards the people, and they said, "What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?" 6 He made ready his chariot, and took his army with him; 7 and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over all of them. 8 Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel; for the children of Israel went out with a high hand. 9 The Egyptians pursued after them: all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army; and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon. 10 When Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them; and they were very afraid. The children of Israel cried out to Yahweh. 14 Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still." 15 Yahweh said to Moses, "Why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward. 16 Lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go into the midst of the sea on dry ground. 17 I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them: and I will get myself honor over Pharaoh, and over all his host, over his chariots, and over his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh, when I have gotten myself honor over Pharaoh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen." 19 The angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them. 23 The Egyptians pursued, and went in after them into the midst of the sea: all of Pharaoh`s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 It happened in the morning watch, that Yahweh looked out on the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and confused the Egyptian army. 25 He took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them heavily; so that the Egyptians said, "Let`s flee from the face of Israel, for Yahweh fights for them against the Egyptians!" 26 Yahweh said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen." 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it. Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 The waters returned, and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even all Pharaoh`s army that went in after them into the sea.

Genesis 42-45 God Rebuilds the Family of Israel

Psalm 8:1-9 Praising the God Who Cares For Us
8:1 A Psalm by David
A 1 "Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth, who has set Your glory above the heavens!
 B 2 From the lips of babes and infants You have established strength, because of Your adversaries, that You might silence the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained;
C 4a what is man, that You think of him?
c' 4b What is the son of man, that You care for him?
b' 5 For You have made him a little lower than God, and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You make him ruler over the works of Your hands. You have put all things under his feet: 7 All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field, 8 The birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
a' 9 Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!"

Observations: 8:1-4a See the previous post for vv 1-4. The chiastic structure of the psalm highlights God's dealings with man in the center (4a/4b). The first half magnifies God's glory in His rule over creation, and ends with His care of man.
8:4b-9 The second half of the psalm magnifies God's glory for His blessing of man. Although made lower than his creator, God crowned man with glory and honor (Genesis 1:26-28) and put all animals under his dominion, reflecting God's dominion. The “Son of Man” was the Messiah's favorite title for Himself, reflecting Daniel 7:13-14, but it would also be appropriate to see an element of the Messiah's dominion in this verse. Hebrews 2:6-9 apply this to the exaltation of the Messiah which isn't yet seen.

Application: God's glory is reflected in His general creation and specific care of man, for which we should praise Him.

Prayer: God, I praise You for creating me, taking a careful interest in me, and providing me with all I need; may I never turn to anyone or trust anything except You for my well-being. Amen.

Proverbs 3:5-8 How Do You Acknowledge God?
3:5 "Trust in YAHWEH with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct/make your paths smooth and straight. 7 Don't be wise in your own eyes. Fear YAHWEH, and depart from evil. 8 It will be health to your body, and nourishment to your bones."

Observation: 3:5-6 Since God sees better than we do, trust His perspective rather than your own.
The heart is the spot where Old Testament folks made their decisions. WWGWMTD (What would God want me to do?)
3:7-8 There's that fear thing again. Note the consequences of it.

Application: What are you trusting God for? How are you acknowledging Him as LORD/Boss in all your pursuits?

Prayer: Whatever You want, God, I'll do it. You are Trustworthy. Amen.

Genesis 42–45 God Rebuilds the Family of Israel. The story could have ended seven verses into chapter 42 with “It's me, Joe! Go get Dad, and let's party.” Instead there is a rather elaborate plan to bring his brothers to a awareness of, confession of, and forsaking of their selfish sin, in demonstrating self-sacrificial, unity-building behavior. (Helpful for making a nation.) It's not about Joseph.

Genesis 42 Vision Vindicated
42:1 "Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2...“Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die.” 4 But Jacob didn’t send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps harm happen to him.” 6 Joseph was the governor over the land...Joseph’s brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the earth. 7 Joseph saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them...9 Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies!
13 They said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers...the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.” 20 Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.” 21 They said one to another, “We are certainly GUILTY concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.” 24 He...took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
25 Then Joseph gave a command to fill their bags with grain, and to restore each man’s money into his sack, and to give them food for the way. 26 They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there. 27 As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging place, he saw his money. 28 “My money is restored! Behold, it is in my sack!” Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” 29 They came to Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and told him all that had happened...36 Jacob, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me.” 37 Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons, if I don’t bring him to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him to you again.” 38 He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

Observations: 43:6 So God planned this all along (but then you knew that). Now Joseph has plans for dealing with his brothers, but we're left guessing about what's the strategy and how it will play out. It's like that with God and us sometimes. When we're not sure how God's plan for us will unfold, we need to reaffirm His clear revelation, check that we're doing what He said, and trust Him to bring it to completion.
43:21 Talionic justice (Note the repetition of “distress.”) led to confession of guilt.
43:24 Why Simeon? Reuben wasn't there when they plotted to kill Joseph (Genesis 37:21). As the next eldest, Simeon would have borne the leadership and responsibility. Note the causes of Jacob's pain, and that he isn't called Israel in this chapter.

Application: We have to own guilt before we can get rid of it.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thanks that you provide the means of both recognizing and dealing with our guilt. Amen.
1 John 1:8 "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we haven't sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us."
Genesis 43 Israel and Judah Sacrifice Their Self-Interests
43:1 "The famine was severe in the land. 2 It happened, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little more food.” 3 Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you....’ 8 Judah said to Israel, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we’ll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones. 9 I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever 11 Israel, said to them...12 and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13 Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man. 14 May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”
15 The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
20 “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food. 21 When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand. 22 We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.”
23 He said, “Peace be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Simeon out to them. 27 He asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?” 28 They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed down humbly.
32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. 33 They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled one with another. 34 He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him."

Observations: 43:9 Self-centered Judah (Genesis 38) gets other-centered “religion”.
43:14 Jacob now trusts God with what is most dear to him, for the sake of the family (cf Abe offering Isaac).
43:32 Egypt was a good place to grow a nation without fear or contamination. If the Israelites in Canaan grew too numerous, the surrounding nations would band together to destroy them. God was moving them to Egypt to form them into a nation which would go back and judge the pagans as God prophesied to Abe in Genesis 15.

Application: Living for the benefit of others is the best way to benefit ourselves.

Prayer: God of pleasures forevermore, open my eyes to how I may be living for my temporary security, significance and pleasure. Help me repent before the distress volume gets too high. Amen.

Genesis 44 The Trap is Sprung
44:1 "He commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in his sack’s mouth. 2 Put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, with his grain money.” 4 When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men. When you overtake them, ask them, ‘Why have you rewarded evil for good?'"... 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan. How then should we steal silver or gold out of your lord’s house? 9 With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondservants.”
12 The cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.15 Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Don’t you know that such a man as I can indeed divine?”

16 Judah said, “What will we tell my lord? What will we speak? Or how will we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Behold, we are my lord’s bondservants, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found...” 27 Your servant, my father, said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons: 28 and the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces”; and I haven’t seen him since. 29 If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.’ 30 Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us; since his life is bound up in the boy’s life; 31 it will happen, when he sees that the boy is no more, that he will die. Your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant, our father, with sorrow to Sheol. 32 For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I don’t bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.’ 33 Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, a bond servant to my lord; and let the boy go up with his brothers. 34 For how will I go up to my father, if the boy isn’t with me?—lest I see the evil that will come on my father.

Observations: 44:16 Judah recognizes the hand of God in exposing their sin.
44:33 Judah becomes self-sacrificial as he realizes the consequences of his sin on others.

Genesis 45 Physical and Spiritual Deliverance

45:1 "Then Joseph couldn’t control himself before all those who stood before him, and he cried, “Cause everyone to go out from me!” No one else stood with him, while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2 He wept aloud. The Egyptians heard, and the house of Pharaoh heard. 3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Does my father still live?”
His brothers couldn’t answer him; for they were terrified at his presence. 4 Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.”
They came near. “He said, I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 Now don’t be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are yet five years, in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance. 8 So now it wasn’t you who sent me here, but God, and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt. 9 Hurry, and go up to my father, and tell him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says, “God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me. Don’t wait. 10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen...11 There I will nourish you; for there are yet five years of famine...13 You shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. You shall hurry and bring my father down here.” 15 He kissed all his brothers, and wept on them.

16 The report of it was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, “Joseph’s brothers have come.” It pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants. 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do this. Load your animals, and go, travel to the land of Canaan. 18 Take your father and your households, and come to me, and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.’ 19 Now you are commanded: do this. 24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed. He said to them, “See that you don’t quarrel on the way.”
25 They went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father. 26 They told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” His heart fainted, for he didn’t believe them. 27 They told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them. When he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob, their father, revived. 28 Israel said, “It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

Observations: 45:7 The deliverance or salvation of the family wasn't just in the physical sense, but also in the spiritual. What started out as a fractured, self-centered, guilty group, eking out an existence in Canaan, ends up as a unified self-sacrificial family enjoying the finest earth had to offer.
45:19 The incredible grace of God not only redeemed the family from near extinction, but God has Pharaoh command even more blessings upon them.
45:26 Through a descendant of Abe, all the known earth was blessed. (But wait, there's more...)

Application: God has purposes that go beyond our immediate needs and interests. If we humbly and submissively obey, as did Joseph, a tsunami of blessing could ensue.

Prayer: God, in Whose presence is fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore, may I never be satisfied with mere comfortable existence. Use me for Your glory. Amen.

Digging Deeper:

God in a nutshell: God is concerned with blessing us on every level, physical, emotional and spiritual, and has a plan to do that, which can occur if we faithfully obey. He brings difficulties into our lives to bring us into a place where He can bless us. His sovereign rules are that obedience is blessed (Joseph) and disobedience is cursed until we repent (brothers).

Us in a nutshell: Usually we deserve the difficulties we reap. When we repent, God relents and restores us to a blessable condition. If we don't repent, He can't bless us.
