1 Samuel 26-28 Rare Medium Says “You're Done”

Psalm 44:9-11 Trusting When It Looks Hopeless
Ps 44:9 (8 In God we have made our boast all day long, we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah.) 9 But now you rejected us, and brought us to dishonor, and don’t go out with our armies. 10 You make us turn back from the adversary. Those who hate us take spoil for themselves. 11 You have made us like sheep for food, and have scattered us among the nations. 12 You sell your people for nothing, and have gained nothing from their sale. 13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scoffing and a derision to those who are around us. 14 You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. 15 All day long my dishonor is before me, and shame covers my face, 16 At the taunt of one who reproaches and verbally abuses, because of the enemy and the avenger.
17 All this has come on us, yet have we not forgotten you, Neither have we been false to your covenant. 18 Our heart has not turned back, neither have our steps strayed from your path, 19 Though you have crushed us in the haunt of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death. 20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god; 21 won’t God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart. 22 Yes, for your sake we are killed all day long. We are regarded as sheep for the slaughter. 23 Wake up! Why do you sleep, Lord? Arise! Don’t reject us forever. 24 Why do you hide your face, and forget our affliction and our oppression? 25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust. Our body clings to the earth. 26 Rise up to help us. Redeem us for your hesed/loyal covenantal love's sake."

Observations: 44:1-8 See this post for vv 1-8, where the psalmist boasts in God all day long for His victorious help, in contrast to this section.
44:9-26 In these verses the psalmist laments that God is no longer helping them like He did in the first part of the psalm. Instead of going out to fight their battles, God is letting them lose. The psalmist asserts that in spite of not receiving God's benefits/blessing, they have been loyal to Him, keeping His covenant, and not wavering in their faith (like Job). Therefore the psalmist has confidence to trust in God's hesed/loyal covenantal love's and continues to pray.

Application: If you have been loyal to God, He will be loyal to you; continue to pray and trust Him, and He will act according to His promises; He can't do otherwise.

Prayer: Faithful God, I trust that You will protect and bless me according to Your promises, for which I am believing You and waiting; I will not abandon my confidence in You and Your word. Amen.

Proverbs 12:13-14 Good Fruit
Pr 12:13 “ An evil man is trapped by sinfulness of lips, but the righteous shall come out of trouble. 14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth. The work of a man’s hands shall be rewarded to him.

Observations: 12:13-14 An evil person usually speaks lies, and gets tangled in them. A righteous person, on the other hand, not only gets delivered from the trouble that the wicked try to cause him (with their lies), but winds up with good, as a result of his words. Not only do we receive payback from our words, but also our works.

Application: Speak and do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty – James 2:12 (1:25).

Prayer: Father, set a guard on my lips so my lips only bear delicious fruit. Amen.

1 Samuel 26-28 Once again the choice servant of God is persecuted by the enemies of God. However God protects David and has him blessed by both Saul and the Philistines, so David can continue to do God's will. As David prospers taking the high road, Saul declines, descending to and through the earth as a result of seeking his own will rather than God's.

1 Samuel 26 Guiltless and Blessed
26:1 The Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, "Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?" 2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David 5 David arose, and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and saw the place where Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped around him 7 with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him. 8 Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke" 9 David said to Abishai, "Don’t destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?" 10 David said, "As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish. 11 Yahweh forbid that I should put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed; 12 So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head; and they went away: and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Yahweh was fallen on them.
13 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain afar off; a great space being between them; 14 and David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, "Don’t you answer, Abner?" Then Abner answered, "Who are you who cries to the king?" 15 David said to Abner, "Aren’t you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord, the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord. 16 This thing isn’t good that you have done. As Yahweh lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, Yahweh’s anointed. Now see where the king’s spear is, and the jar of water that was at his head."
17 Saul knew David’s voice, and said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" David said, "It is my voice, my lord, O king." 18 He said, "Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand? 19 Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that Yahweh has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, they are cursed before Yahweh; for they have driven me out this day that I shouldn’t cling to Yahweh’s inheritance, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’ 20 Now therefore, don’t let my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of Yahweh; for the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains."
21 Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly." 22 David answered, "Behold the spear, O king! Then let one of the young men come over and get it. 23 Yahweh will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because Yahweh delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn’t put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed. 24 Behold, as your life was respected this day in my eyes, so let my life be respected in the eyes of Yahweh, and let him deliver me out of all oppression." 25 Then Saul said to David, "You are blessed, my son David. You shall both do mightily, and shall surely prevail." So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

Observations: 26:1-12 The Ziphites again betray David, and Saul again reneges on his promies, and seeks to kill David. God again delivers Saul into David's hand (by causing a deep sleep on the camp), and David again refrains from taking vengeance. Yawn. The interesting piece that's new is the desire David has to be guiltless, which explains his refusal to kill Saul. He is trusting that God will strike Saul, or he will die of old age, or be destroyed in battle.
26:13-17 Making sure that there is a good space between them, David taunts Abner, Saul's uncle and commander in chief for failing to protect Yahweh's anointed (which David was).
26:17-20 David again persuades Saul of his innocence, indicating that the treatment David is receiving is tantamount to encouraging him to leave Israel and serve another god in another land.
26:21-25 Saul again acknowledges his sin, great error, and folly, then blesses David, who reminds him of God's just judgment (which Saul never seems to have in mind).

Application: If we embrace God's just judgment of our actions, we will deal righteously with others; otherwise we sin.

Prayer: God may I always do the things that will fare well at Your judgment seat, trusting You to protect and bless me as I obey You. Amen.

1 Samuel 27 Defection and Deception
27:1 David said in his heart, "I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the borders of Israel. So shall I escape out of his hand." 2 David arose, and passed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 3 David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife. 4 It was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him. 5 David said to Achish, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?" 6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: why Ziklag pertains to the kings of Judah to this day. 7 The number of the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.
8 David and his men went up, and made a raid on the Geshurites, and the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for those were the inhabitants of the land, who were of old, as you go to Shur, even to the land of Egypt. 9 David struck the land, and saved neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the cattle, and the donkeys, and the camels, and the clothing; and he returned, and came to Achish. 10 Achish said, "Against whom have you made a raid today?" David said, "Against the South of Judah, against the South of the Jerahmeelites, and against the South of the Kenites." 11 David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring them to Gath, saying, "Lest they should tell of us, saying, ‘David this, and this has been his way all the time he has lived in the country of the Philistines.’" 12 Achish believed David, saying, "He has made his people Israel utterly to abhor him. Therefore he shall be my servant forever."

Observations: 27:1-7 To escape Saul's insanity, David “defects” to Gath, Goliath's hometown, and the place where David did his madman imitation. There is no indication that David sought the Lord's counsel in this decision, but the same can be said of the previous interaction with Saul. Proverbs 22:3 “A prudent man sees danger, and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.”  King Achish, probably happy to have David not fighting for Saul, gives him the city of Ziklag.
27:8-12 The places where David resides and raids are in the territory Yahweh gave to Judah (see map). David is actually fulfilling the Israelite responsibility to drive out and destroy the pagans (15:5), something the rest of the nation was disobeying. His “deception” about where he raided could be viewed as a military tactic or deliberate vagueness. His answer is literally “Negev” which can mean “south of.” David was raiding the “area” south of Judah, not necessarily southern Judah. This fits the other two areas descriptions as well. Achish took it to mean David was attacking Judah, making it impossible to go back to them. David didn't correct the misperception.

Application: When a man’s ways please Yahweh, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. - Proverbs 16:7

Prayer: Lord, may my ways be pleasing in Your sight, and may You give me peace, so I may continue to do Your will. Amen.

1 Samuel 28 Rare Medium Prophesies “You're Done”
26:1 The Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. Achish said to David, "Know assuredly that you shall go out with me in the army, you and your men." 2 David said to Achish, "Therefore you shall know what your servant will do." Achish said to David, "Therefore will I make you my bodyguard for ever." 3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. Saul had put away mediums, and wizards, out of the land. 4 The Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped in Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. 6 When Saul inquired of Yahweh, Yahweh didn’t answer him, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
7 Then Saul said to his servants, "Seek me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her, and inquire of her." His servants said to him, "Behold, there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at Endor." 8 Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, "Please divine to me by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomever I shall name to you." 9 The woman said to him, "Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?" 10 Saul swore to her by Yahweh, saying, "As Yahweh lives, no punishment shall happen to you for this thing." 11 Then the woman said, "Whom shall I bring up to you?" He said, "Bring Samuel up for me." 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!" 13 The king said to her, "Don’t be afraid. For what do you see?" The woman said to Saul, "I see a god coming up out of the earth." 14 He said to her, "What does he look like?" She said, "An old man comes up. He is covered with a robe." Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and showed respect.
15 Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?" Saul answered, "I am very distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do." 16 Samuel said, "Why then do you ask of me, since Yahweh has departed from you and has become your adversary? 17 Yahweh has done to you as he spoke by me. Yahweh has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David. 18 Because you didn’t obey the voice of Yahweh, and didn’t execute his fierce wrath on Amalek, therefore Yahweh has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover Yahweh will deliver Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. Yahweh will deliver the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines."
20 Then Saul fell immediately his full length on the earth, and was terrified, because of the words of Samuel. There was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night. 21 The woman came to Saul, and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him, "Behold, your handmaid has listened to your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me. 22 Now therefore, please listen also to the voice of your handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, when you go on your way." 23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, constrained him; and he listened to their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat on the bed. 24 The woman had a fattened calf in the house. She hurried and killed it; and she took flour, and kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread of it. 25 She brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they ate. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

Observations: 28:1-2 In the upcoming war against Israel, Achish makes David his bodyguard. More about this in the next chapter. The two previous times Saul encountered the Philistines like this (chapters 13 and 17), neither time went well.
28:3-6 Samuel was dead; Saul had killed the priests at Nob, and had previously removed the mediums and wizards from the land. Saul had turned his back on God, so God wasn't answering his prayers for guidance. Consequently, when faced with an invading army, Saul was left on his own, without any supernatural insight, which was just the way he had wanted it, except now he was panicking.
28:7-11 Saul sends his servants seeking a medium who could conjure up dead spirits so he can get advice. Most people who turn to the dead for guidance are spiritually dead, and don't have a relationship with God. Sin causes the separation, so He can't hear them (Isa 59:2). God forbade consulting spirits and the dark side (Dt 18) because He communicated to His people all they needed to know through His revelation (and prophets). Words from the dark side aren't likely to lead to life either.
28:12-14 The witch of Endor cried in surprise at seeing Samuel, perhaps expecting her normal demon/spirit to appear. She also saw that her inquirer was Saul.
28:15-19 Samuel was a little cranky from being awakened and reiterated the previous message of judgment that Saul had failed to obey Yahweh, so He had become his adversary. He adds that the impending attack was Yahweh's work of retribution, and that Saul and his sons would be in the grave with Samuel that day (to await future resurrection and permanent judgment -Dan 12:2-3).
28:20-25 The condemned man gets his last meal and the curtain falls.

Application: If we work on doing God's objectively revealed will every day, we will be in a position to have Him guide us in the subjective aspects of His will when we need to know them.

Prayer: My Good Shepherd, may I always keep the lines of communication open between us and never hang up on You because of my sin, or put You on hold because of my slowness to obey. Amen.

Digging Deeper:

God in a nutshell: God delivers from their enemies those who do His will, and delivers those who don't do His will into the hands of their enemies for destruction. The determining factor is our decision/choice to obey or disobey. He always follows through on His promises, which is great if we're being good, but devastating if we're not.
1Sam 26:23 Yahweh will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because Yahweh delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn’t put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed. 24 Behold, as your life was respected this day in my eyes, so let my life be respected in the eyes of Yahweh, and let him deliver me out of all oppression."

Us in a nutshell: When our ways are pleasing to God, He goes out of His way to bless us, making even our enemies bless us. 26:25 Then Saul said to David, "You are blessed, my son David. You shall both do mightily, and shall surely prevail." When we are disobedient and displeasing, we cut ourselves off from His help and communication, and are left to our own devices to face situations that will overwhelm our own resources. It's too bad when we abandon God, because He will stand by our choice and His sovereign will in abandoning us.

1 Samuel 2-28 complete text
1 Samuel 26
26:1 The Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, "Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?" 2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 3 Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert, by the way. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. 4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had certainly come. 5 David arose, and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army: and Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped around him.
6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, "Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?" Abishai said, "I will go down with you." 7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him. 8 Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time." 9 David said to Abishai, "Don’t destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?" 10 David said, "As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish. 11 Yahweh forbid that I should put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go." 12 So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head; and they went away: and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Yahweh was fallen on them.

26:1 It happened in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. 19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God,
Sprinkling blood & washing innards were not for atoning/covering sin, but whole burnt offerings of dedication & purification Ex 29; Lev 1.
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith (11:6 God is who He said He is and will do what He said He'll do),
having our hearts sprinkled (9:13,19,21; Ex 24:7-8) from an evil conscience (9:14) and our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope (12:23) without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 1Jn 3:3 hope...purify self.
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love (13:1) and good works (13:16), 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves
together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Warning Passage Sin / Problem Warning / Consequences Exhortation / Corrective
2:1 Give more abundant attention... 4 How will we escape (payback) if we neglect/ignore so great a salvation? Neglect what taught and drift by God's intended destination. No escape from just payback. Missing it: Loss of glory, inheritance, co-rulership with JC. Pay closer attention to what was taught. Be perfected through suffering like our Captain who brings sons to glory 2:10.
3:7-4:16 3:12 Beware, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God. Hard heart, deceived by sin; not heeding. Wrong values, rebel, unbelief. Denial of partaking with Christ, sharing in inheritance rest. Exhort one another daily; tender heart;
hold confidence steadfast; faith in Word;
Diligent and obedient.
Maturity-discern good/evil 5:14.
6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come 9 But, beloved, we're confident of better things that accompany your salvation. Not progressing to maturity; Fall away; go back to the way they were - (OT sacrificial system).
Cf Unpardonable sin
(stay in realm of unbelief) Mt 12:31-32.
6:6 If they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.
Rejected/disqualified; burned 1 Cor 3:15; curse; Barren life.
Press to maturity. 6:10 God's not unjust to forget your work and labor of love shown toward His name, in ministry to the saints 11 show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
10:26-39 If we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy...testimony two witnesses...Romans 2:5. Willful, ongoing sin, cx 10:22-25 29 trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which He was sanctified as common, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 29 How worse punishment, will he be thought worthy of who has... 30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The LORD will judge His people." 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 32 Recall the former days, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: 35 do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward; 36 you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise. 38 the just shall live by faith; if anyone draws back to perdition* My soul has no pleasure in him. 39 believe to the saving of the soul.
12:14-29 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; any root of bitterness..immoral.
25 See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. 12:23 just made perfect cf 11:40.
16 Temporal immoral pleasure seeking; neglecting inheritance
no diligence; bitterness.
25 Refusing to listen.
Inherit the blessing, rejected; If they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape (judgment) if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven. 12:2 Consider Him...weary and discouraged in your souls. 4 resist to bloodshed, striving against sin. 8 we are receiving a kingdom... have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear 29 our God is a consuming fire 13:21 perfect in every good work to do His will pleasing to Him.

*Matthew 7:13 Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. 15 Beware of false prophets.
Philippians 3:18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame --- who set their mind on earthly things.
2 Peter 2:1 false prophets among the people...false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 many will follow their destructive ways, the way of truth will be blasphemed.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:
1. What's the difference between covering, atoning, sprinkling, sanctifying, purifying, cleansing, perfecting, and holiness?
2. If we're already perfect and sanctified, why all the commands to be holy? Why the warning passages for not progressing to “perfection”?
3. What happens if you don't totally fall away or “apostatize” , but just kinda drift a bit, or not mature quickly? Would God be pleased?
4. How do you actually provoke or incite someone to love (desire what's in another's best interest) and good deeds? Why the reference to the Day?
5. How many of the “Exhortations/Correctives” are habits in your life? What steps could you take to incorporate them into your life?

Genesis 39-41 From the Pit to the Pinnacle of the World

Psalm 8:1-4  Get a Grip on Glory
8:1 Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth, who has set Your glory above the heavens! 2 From the lips of babes and infants You have established strength, because of Your adversaries, that You might silence the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained 4 what is man that You think of him? What is the son of man, that You care for him?”

Observation: Majestic is important. Name is reputation. Glory is “liver,” in Hebrew, the largest and most important organ in the body. To glorify God is to have Him be seen as greater than anything and everything in the created realm. The nation of Israel was created (as are we) for His glory (Isaiah 43:7), and we are commanded to do everything for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Application: How does each item on your ToDo list contribute to God's glory? Align your life with God's purpose for you by visiting the How to Glorify God page in TOYL.

Prayer: Creator and Master, thanks for life today. Guide me in using it to give You glory. Amen.

Proverbs 3:1-4 Remember to Remember
3:1 “My son, don't forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments: 2 for length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to you. 3 Don't let hesed/loyalty and truth/faithfulness forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor/grace, and good understanding in the sight of God and man."

Observations: The key to the blessings of long life, peace, and favor in the sight of man and God is keeping God's commandments (as instructed by his father) which result in being loyal and faithful to God.

Application: Memorization is a great way to write truth on your heart.

PrayerGod who never forgets, help me remember and do what's true. Amen.

Genesis 39-41 From the Pit to the Pinnacle of the World

Genesis 39 Prospered: from the Pit to Prison
39:1 "Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there. 2 Yahweh was with Joseph...3 His master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made all that he did prosper in his hand. 4 Joseph found grace/favor in his sight...5 from the time that he made him overseer in his house, that Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of Yahweh was on all that he had...6 He left all that he had in Joseph’s hand. He didn’t concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.
7 It happened after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused...How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” 13 When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside, 14 she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “Behold, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice...19 It happened, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” that his wrath was kindled.
20 Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in custody. 21 But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed hesed-loyal love to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 The keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was responsible for it. 23 The keeper of the prison didn’t look after anything that was under his hand, because Yahweh was with him; and that which he did, Yahweh made it prosper."

Observations: Joseph was blameless, upright, and prospered by God. Potiphar's wife was evil, lying, and poisonous to Joseph. Because of his loyalty to God, Joseph was unjustly punished. Yet, God was loyal to him, protecting and prospering him wherever he was.
God can give us contentment and favor, whatever our circumstances.

Application: Do what's right in the sight of God, regardless of the consequences, which God will oversee and orchestrate for your benefit.

Prayer: God of Joseph, help me be content and patient and true to you, as I await the fulfillment of Your promises. Amen.

Genesis 40 Two Dreams and Eleven Plus Two Years
40:1 "It happened after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt...4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he took care of them. They stayed in prison many days. 8 They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.”
12 Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days. 13 Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his cupbearer. 14 But remember me when it will be well with you, and please show kindness to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house. 15 For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.”

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good...18 Joseph answered, “This is its interpretation. The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.”
20 It happened the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand; 22 but he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet the chief cupbearer didn’t remember Joseph, but forgot him."

Observations: Innocent and imprisoned, Joseph serves those around him, using the skills God had given him. Meanwhile, he is forgotten for 11 years by everyone but God. Then he had to wait two more years for the cupbearer to remember (Genesis 41:1,45). He didn't get bitter, nor resent his treatment, but must have learned the secret of contentment.

Application: It's better to bear the cup than bake the bread. It's best to learn the Secret of Contentment.

Prayer: Infinitely Loyal and Wise God, whenever I'm tempted to doubt that You know what You're doing, remind me of Joseph, and help me submit to what you've allowed into my life. Amen.

Genesis 41 - From Prison to the Palace
41:1 "It happened at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed...8 In the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt’s magicians and wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.

9 Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh...12 There was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams...13 It happened, as he interpreted to us, so it was: he restored me to my office, and he hanged him.” 14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph...15 I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”

25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dream of Pharaoh is one. What God is about to do he has declared to Pharaoh.26 The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good heads of grain are seven years. The dream is one. 27 The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine. 28 What God is about to do he has shown to Pharaoh. 29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. 30 There will arise after them seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land...32 The dream was doubled to Pharaoh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.
33 “Now therefore let Pharaoh look for a insightful and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt’s produce in the seven plenteous years. 36 The food will be for a store to the land against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Egypt; that the land not perish through the famine.
37 The thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. 38 Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?” 39 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Because God has shown you all of this, there is none so insightful and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and according to your word will all my people be ruled. Only in the throne I will be greater than you.” 41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
Neith
45 Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-Paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph was thirty years old...47 In the seven plenteous years the earth produced abundantly. 49 Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number. 50 To Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came...51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.” 52 The name of the second, he called Ephraim: “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
54 The seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 57 All countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth."

Observations: After protecting him from his evil brothers for over a decade, at just the right time, God put Joseph in position to save the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the world. Maybe God had a plan for Joseph's pain after all.
41:16 Joseph was a good steward of the abilities God had given him, even though he couldn't see how God planned to use him in the future. Pharaohs were considered divine, so to say there is a higher power who pulls the strings was a bold and risky statement.
41:51-52 Manasseh means “cause to forget.” Ehpraim means “doubly fruitful.”

Application: It's possible to be abused and mistreated, yet also look back in gratitude when we see how the sharps and flats created a masterpiece. It takes confident faith in God's promises to have the same response looking forward.

Prayer: God of plans and prosperity, help me trust You and appreciate Your blessings in the midst of what I perceive as pain. Amen.

Digging Deeper:
Genesis 41:45 Pharaoh gave Joseph a wife, Asenath, (dedicated to Neith, the goddess of war/protection, also viewed as the creator and mother of the sun-god Re in some traditons.) The Greeks identified her with Athena, the highest honor.

“An interior wall of the temple at Esna records an account of creation in which Neith brings forth from the primeval waters of the Nun the first land ex nihilo. All that she conceived in her heart comes into being including the thirty gods. Having no known husband she has been described as "Virgin Mother Goddess":
Unique Goddess, mysterious and great who came to be in the beginning and caused everything to come to be . .. the divine mother of Re, who shines on the horizon . . .[4]
