Revelation 19-20 The Return of the King of Kings

TMS 1 Peter 2:11 Abstinence is Biblical
1 Peter 2:11 “Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims,
abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.”

Observations: 2:11 Peter is concerned about the spiritual wellbeing and eternal happiness of his readers. He wants them to experience the blessings God has for them in this life and the next (cf 2 Peter 1:11 below). He warns them of their adversary the devil (1 Peter 5:8), but the thing most likely to do them in, is their unsanctified desires. So in the verse above he says believers should live on this planet as sojourners and pilgrims (we're just passing through an alien land for spiritual purposes). Our real home isn't here, so we shouldn't get too comfortable. In fact, we should abstain from (and steer clear away from) any fleshly lusts (desires for the temporal, particularly illegitimate sensual attractions), because such distractions war against our souls. Our souls (mind, will, emotions) are what we use to exchange our temporal days for the eternal delights of God. If we're distracted and consumed by gratifying our desires for temporal power (security/significance), pleasures, or possessions, we can't be busy laying up treasure in heaven, nor delighting in the presence of God, in Whose hand are pleasures forever more.
2 Peter 1:2 "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue...10...for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

Application: Don't become a casualty like Demas who loved this present world, and departed from the path of righteousness; instead learn to kill your deadly desires, and live happily ever after.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me keep my desires and appetites focused on what is of eternal benefit, so I don't get stuffed and consumed by the temporal that never really satisfies. Amen.

Revelation 19-20 In these penultimate chapters of the Bible, the Lord Jesus actually reigns: He celebrates the wedding feast of the Lamb, returns to earth, defeats and tosses the Anti-Christ and False Prophet into the lake of fire, and treads the winepress of God, killing their followers; He resurrects and rewards faithful OT and Tribulation saints, has Satan bound, and as promised, reigns over His Millennial Kingdom for a thousand years. Satan is loosed to deceive the nations once more, but is defeated in the battle of Gog and Magog, and tossed into the lake of fire with the other members of the unholy trio. Then sitting on the Great White Throne He judges the not so righteous, according to their unrighteous deeds. Anyone whose name was not found in the Book of Life was tossed into the lake of fire (and there are still two more chapters to come).

Revelation 19 Wedding Or Winepress
19:1 "After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, "Hallelujah! Salvation, power, and glory belong to our God: 2 for true and righteous are His judgments. For He has judged the great prostitute, who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality, and He has avenged the blood of his servants at her hand." 3 A second said, "Hallelujah! Her smoke goes up forever and ever." 4 The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne, saying, "Amen! Hallelujah!"
5 A voice came forth from the throne, saying, "Give praise to our God, all you His servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great!" 6 I heard something like the voice of a great multitude, and like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of mighty thunders, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Omnipotent/Almighty, reigns! 7 Let us rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let us give the glory to Him. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready." 8 It was given to her that she would array herself in bright/shining, pure, fine linen: for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9 He said to me, "Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’" He said to me, "These are true words of God." 10 I fell down before his feet to worship him. He said to me, "Look! Don’t do it! I am a fellow bondservant with you and with your brothers who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God, for the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy."
11 I saw the heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True. In righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns. He has names written and a name written which no one knows but He Himself. 13 He is clothed in a garment sprinkled with blood. His name is called "The Word of God." 14 The armies which are in heaven followed Him on white horses, clothed in white/shining, pure, fine linen. 15 Out of His mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword, that with it He should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He treads the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 He has on His garment and on His thigh a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." 17 I saw an angel standing in the sun. He cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the sky, "Come! Be gathered together to the great supper of God, 18 that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, and small and great." 19 I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse, and against His army.
20 The beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who worked the signs in his sight, with which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulphur. 21 The rest were killed with the sword of him who sat on the horse, the sword which came forth out of his mouth. All the birds were filled with their flesh."

Observations: 19:1-4 After all the preceding judgments, John then hears praise being given to God for the executing justice on the false religious system and avenging the blood of His servants at her hand. Salvation, power and glory belong to God for His true and righteous judgments in eradicating the corrupting evil. A second voice praises God (Hallelujah means Praise Yah, as in Yahweh). The twenty-four elders and four living creatures concur.
19:5-10 A voice from the throne exhorts all God's servants, those who fear Him, to praise Him. John hears them do so, praising God for reigning, and executing His will on the earth. He had tolerated the false religious system, as a means of trying and purifying His holy ones, to give people an opportunity to demonstrate loyalty and prove themselves worthy of His blessings (unlike Satan). The saints give God glory because the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His Bride, the church has made herself ready (being clothed in bright/shining, fine linen, as in glorious, the righteous acts of the saints). John is instructed to write another “beatitude” indicating the blessedness of those who are invited to the Marriage Feast/supper of the Lamb. The placement of the Marriage Feast here, at the end of the Tribulation and the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom might cause some eyebrows to be raised, since the Rapture in the Pre-Tribulational view occurred seven years earlier (or three and a half years earlier for the Mid-Trib view). The time lag for the feast could be explained by Jewish marriage customs, for there is no Scripture that says that it has to occur immediately. However, the moving of the Rapture to just before the Feast, causes a lot more difficulties than arched eyebrows (see comments on 1 Thessalonians 4:16, and Revelation 3:10). The angel tells John that these are the true words of God, and John falls down to worship him. The angel forbids him, indicating that he is just a fellow servant along with believers who hold fast the testimony of Jesus. Only God should be worshiped, because the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy. Both “testimonies” are probably the testimony which Jesus gives (subjective genitives), making the last clause mean that Jesus is the One who gives the Spirit of Prophecy, therefore He is God, and the One who should be worshiped, rather than the messenger.
19:11-19 John sees the heaven opened and a Rider on white horse. The Rider is called Faithful and True, who judges and wars in righteousness. He wears many crowns and names/titles, as well as a name which no one knows but He Himself. This implies self-sovereignty, having inherited power/glory (name). He is clothed in a garment sprinkled with blood (as the High Priests were), and is called “The Word of God” (John 1:14). The armies of heaven follow Him. Out of His mouth proceeds a sharp sword, His word (Hebrews 4:12) which strikes His enemies. He will rule the nations with a rod of iron (Psalm 2) and tread the winepress of the wrath of God, destroying all who oppose Him (Revelation 14:10-20). His visible title is “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” An angel calls the vultures to the great supper of God, in which they will feed on the flesh of God's enemies. John sees the Beast and the kings of earth and their armies gathered against Jesus and His army. The worldlings don't have a chance of succeeding against Him.
19:20 The Beast was taken/captured, along with the False Prophet. They were thrown into the lake of fire, that differs from the garbage dump of Gehenna on many counts, the one noted there is that it burns with sulfur/brimstone. The rest of the opposition were killed by the sword/word of Christ, and the vultures had a feast.

Application: Three characteristics of the saints: they worship God for His righteous and just character; they are clothed in righteous deeds; and they hold fast (as in faithfully obey) the revelation Jesus gave.

Prayer: Lord, You are the victorious King of Kings, and Lord of Lords; don't let me foolishly think that anyone else is worth serving, but please guide me in pleasing You. Amen.

Revelation 20 Blessed or Burnt
20:1 "And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 He seized the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole inhabited earth, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and cast him into the abyss, and shut it, and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were finished. After this, he must be freed for a short time.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as didn’t worship the beast nor his image, and didn’t receive the mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived, and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
5 The rest of the dead didn’t live until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him one thousand years.
7 And after the thousand years, Satan will be released from his prison, 8 and he will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war; the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up over the breadth of the earth, and surrounded the camp of the saints, and the beloved city. Fire came down out of heaven from God, and devoured them.
10 The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulphur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. There was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire."

Observations: 20:1-3 John next sees an angel with the key to the abyss/pit and a great chain. He seizes the Dragon/Devil/Deceiver, aka Satan and binds him for a 1000 years, and casts him into the pit, so he won't deceive the nations any more, until the 1000 years are finished. After this, he must be freed for a short time, according to God's plan. The normal way of reading this progression is as a definite and literal prison sentence. “Until” indicates a definite point in time. Those who falsely say this is an indefinite period of time, not only have no basis for saying so, but fail to read the rest of the context which explains why this period of time exists. There are over two dozen references to the Devil/Satan's activity in the lives of believers from the Day of Pentecost to the letters to the Churches in Revelation, so he wasn't bound at the Cross as some falsely teach. Obvious Satan is currently alive and well on planet earth, deceiving the nations and those who write non-contextual (unbiblical) theological commentaries (1 Peter 5:8).
20:4-6 After Satan is bound and imprisoned John sees thrones on which sat those who received rulership (one of the rewards Jesus promised to the apostles in His Kingdom -Luke 22:30, and the overcomers -Revelation 3:21). This is the resurrection of the righteous, when Christ repays righteous behavior as He promised (cf Luke 14:14).
Matthew 19:28 "Jesus said to them, "Most certainly I tell you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
He also sees the souls of martyrs who had been been beheaded for their faithfulness to the testimony of Jesus and the word of God, as well as Tribulation saints who had not worshiped the Beast nor received his mark. Righteous OT saints would wake up here (Ezekiel 37:12-13; Isaiah 26:19-21; and Daniel 12:1-3 below).
Ezekiel 37:12 “Therefore prophesy and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. 13 Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves. 14 I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken it and performed it," says the LORD.' "
NT saints had been resurrected at the Rapture (see comments on 1 Thessalonians 4:16). These all came to life (were resurrected) and reigned with Christ for a 1000 years in His Millennial Kingdom. The rest of the dead weren't resurrected until the 1000 years were completed, which again indicates a definite, purposeful period of time, the fulfillment of the Messianic Kingdom promises of the OT (Isaiah 40-66, Ezekiel, etc).
Another “beatitude” or blessing is pronounced on those who have a part, share, allotment, or assigned portion (see Thayer's Lexicon Strongs #3313) in the first resurrection. Notice that this blessedness is for those who are holy. Throughout the Scriptures, since expulsion from the Garden, blessing is a consequence of obedience (see the Blessings and Cursings in Deuteronomy, Psalm 1, and the Sermon on the Mount). Blessing is not some random act of kindness by God, but a benevolent response to our behavior. The blessings are listed as rulership and priesthood which are promised only to overcomers (Rev 3:12, 21). Note too, that the text does not read “take part” but “have an assigned portion” which in the context means the believer's inheritance. The second death has no power or authority over the faithful saints, but they will be priests of God and Christ (cf. Ezek 44) and reign with him 1000 years, in the administration of His Kingdom.
20:7-10 Continuing the specific time sequence, after the 1000 years are over, Satan will be released from his prison, and will go back to his old tricks of deceiving the nations who have experienced Christ's Millennial rule. Satan will gather the nations for war, (for Gog and Magog, see comments on Ezek 38:2, 16; 39:26). The deceived nations will be incited to rebel against the Messiah's rule, and surround Jerusalem. Fire will come down from heaven and destroy them. Then the Devil/Satan will join his buddies the Beast and the False Prophet in the lake of fire, for an indeterminate period of time, as in continual torment forever. There is a clear distinction in this chapter between a 1000 distinct years (which corresponds to the promised Sabbath rest for the people of God -Heb 4:9, mirroring God resting on the seventh day of creation) during which Satan is bound, and the indefinite, everlasting period of the eternal state, during which Satan is in the lake of fire. There is nothing in the text to indicate otherwise, so those who say this is symbolic (as the imagery and other parts of Revelation are), have the burden of proof to demonstrate that it is symbolic, and then specify what it is symbolic of. (Good luck).
20:11-15 Next (coordinate kai) John sees a Great White Throne, and on it is God, probably in the person of the Son, since all judgment was committed to Him. Christ not only promised a resurrection of the righteous, but also of the unrighteous as did Daniel.
John 5:27 “He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Don’t marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, 29 and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.”
Daniel 12:1 "At that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who shall be found written in the book. 2 Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise shall shine as the brightness of the expanse; and those who turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.
Then John sees all the previously unresurrected dead standing before the throne. Holy and righteous people were resurrected in the resurrection of the righteous (20:5-6 above). These are the not so righteous, who were hanging out in Hades (the grave or Sheol) during the Millennial Kingdom. (Yes, that would mean the badly behaving miss out on blessing, just like unfaithful Israel missed out on the Promised Land.) John sees a set of books opened, an then another book opened, which is the Book of Life. The Book of Life in the context of Biblical times was a register of those people (citizens) who could participate in the rule (dominion/life) of a city-state (usually by voting) or enjoy citizenship benefits in a kingdom. All believers have their names written in the Book of Life (Ex 32:32), but those who persist in rebellious sin can have they names “blotted out” (Ex 32:31). This incident of the Golden Calf in Exodus 32 is instructive. Moses wants his name blotted out of God's book on behalf of the sinning Israelites if God won't forgive them. God says those who sin will have their names blotted out (which means they were in the book), and then smites the major sinners (not the entire nation) depriving them of the blessings of the Promised Land (parallel to unfaithful believers missing out on the blessings of the Millennial Kingdom -1Cor 10).
In Psalm 69:28 David asks God to blot the names of unrighteous enemies out of the Book of Life because of their persecution of him. “Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.” Note that their names were in the book, but they are behaving unrighteously against the Lord's anointed. Romans 11 quotes this psalm to refer to the temporary blinding of Israel to the blessings of God, as a consequence of their sin (but goes on to say God still has a plan for them).
In Revelation 3:5 Jesus promised the overcomers that their names would not be blotted out of the book of life, but instead He would confess their name before the Father (for glory and blessing -Mt 16:27). The possibility of having one's name blotted out for unfaithfulness was real, which doesn't mean they would lose their forgiveness, but lose their reward. The rest of the promises to overcomers in Revelation 2-3 are rewards in the kingdom.
The question remains of: “How does one get their name in the Book of Life?” The NT uses the term in Philippians 4:3, recording the names of faithful laborers, but doesn't specify how the names got there. In Luke 19:20, when the seventy disciples returned from casting out demons, Jesus said that they should rejoice that their names are recorded in heaven. They were just exercising the authority of Christ, and Jesus made the segue into exercising authority in heaven (not that they were forgiven, but that is a part of it).
The key (as is true in many “difficult” passages) is to recognize that “eternal life” is “dominion of the Age” in many instances, received in the NT as a result of belief in the Messiah. See the discussion on Genesis 3 and Deuteronomy 30:19 for starters (and then examine the context of every usage of the term life in the OT and NT before you reject the conclusion). The “life” that Jesus came to give consisted of forgiveness (justification), the empowerment of the Holy Spirit (given by the ascended Messiah and necessary for sanctification), and the blessing of an inheritance in the coming kingdom (glorification -Rm 8:17). The NT is abundantly clear that unrighteous believers lose their inheritance (3Jn 8; Eph 5:5, etc) or their right to rule in the kingdom (Col 3:24-25). This is precisely parallel to the OT experience as taught explicitly by Paul in 1Corinthians 10. All the Israelites that came out of Egypt exercised faith (Ex 14:31), were redeemed, had a participation in Christ (although not the New Covenant Holy Spirit), and a planned inheritance in the Promised land. Most forfeited their right to live in the Promised Land (as the ruling people) by their unfaithfulness to the Lord and His commands (Num 13-14). This is why Deuteronomy puts an emphasis on obeying so the next generation will be blessed (exercise life or dominion) rather than cursed (deprived of life and dominion) as were their parents (Dt 28 and all over the book).
The NT believer is given life in the Messianic Age as a result of their trust in Christ (John 3:16) but can forfeit it as a result of unfaithfulness (1Jn 3:15 see comments there). This does not mean they are no longer born again, nor were never born again in the first place, nor that their sins where never forgiven, but it does mean that they won't receive the blessings of the righteous. Most talk of “positional righteousness” as an attempt to explain righteousness and reward by works (as in passages like Romans 2:5-10) is mere talk. We are given life, forgiven and justified by faith in Christ, but experience abundant life by continued belief (John 20:31). Unbelief and sin don't undo regeneration, but result in forfeiture of reward. We'll see more of this in the next chapter where the allotted portion or share in blessing of the unfaithful is in the lake of fire (they're not in the lake of fire, their reward is). Those who equate Gehenna with the lake of fire have simply not studied the passages in the Gospels referring to Gehenna (often incorrectly translated “hell”) with an understanding of context, and with the removal of the glasses of their incorrect and uninformed biases (most fail to take into account the state of the forgiveness of the audience, e.g., in the Sermon on the Mount the audience were Jews who were forgiven on the basis of their participation in the Day of Atonement, as it had been for over a thousand years, and the fact that the Sermon is about being rewarded in the Kingdom, not getting one's sins covered by the blood of the cross). Since ignorant biases die hard, may I recommend the use of a concordance, and previous posts in DailyTruthbase where the context of each use of Gehenna is explained?
Back to the Great White Throne judgment, the less-than-righteous dead are resurrected, and judged according to their deeds, showing them to be worthy of death. However, as a testimony to God's grace, another book was opened, the Book of Life. After being judged worthy of death, there is no hope or merit which could spare the sinner the lake of fire, except if his name was found “having been written” (perfect tense, for an activity that happened in the past with continuing results up to the present) in the book of life. Even if his name was crossed out, or blotted out, it still had been written there. The NT/Greek usage of “blot” has a range of meanings, from wipe away a tear, smear, white-wash, plaster over or erase. It could mean totally eradicate, but as usual, the precise meaning needs to be determined from context. If a name was written on a scroll, simply crossing it out would be the practice as is seen in NT and OT manuscripts and marginal readings. The OT has similar corresponding usages, although obliterate is more common, the other usages could be appropriate. The argument is not that the name still remains (it doesn't, in terms of being a righteous citizen) but it had been written there, which is what the text says, and a person who believed is spared the lake of fire. God is gracious. There would be no purpose of having the book of life there if no name of those being judged was written in it (although some could argue for having a second witness). The second witness argument will fall to pieces under the cross examination of the next two passages referring to the book of life (21:27; 22:19) as well as the reference to the tree of life (see next post). The next chapters also present unrighteous believers, which according to any other interpretation, would not exist.
So all the dead who weren't resurrected and rewarded in the resurrection of the righteous, are judged according to their deeds which were written in the books, and if their name had not been written in the book of life, they joined the unholy trio in the lake of fire.

Application: Be righteous, be blessed, and live happily ever after. Do your will rather than God's will, and you will regret it.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I be faithful to You in all my ways, doing what finds Your favor and is right in Your sight. Amen.

Digging Deeper

God in a nutshell: God is the sovereign judge, who will reign with Christ and destroy all of their enemies. God the Father and God the Son are to be worshipped.

Build-a-Jesus: Jesus, the Bridegroom of the Church, the Messiah, the Word of God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, will triumph. He will reward those who are faithful to Him, and destroy those who have totally rejected Him.

Us in a nutshell: Believers have the opportunity to be resurrected and blessed, and share in the Messiah's kingdom, or forfeit those blessings in doing the devil's will. Those who trust in Christ will have their names written in the Book of Life, and won't go into the lake of fire. Those who are faithful will live happily ever after.

Where to Go for More:

Summer Special TMS John 1:12 and Romans 6

I'm out of the country in a jungle this week, so during this week I'll be posting a verse from the TMS (to get it done by the end of the year) and the unposted first draft outlines of Romans 6-8. The outlines could use a little tweaking, and the numbering system isn't as uniform as that taught in the Sidebar under How to Study the Bible Like Sherlock 'Olmes, but if you've gotten to the point where you understand the exegetical method, you should find value in them. Try answering the questions in the study guides under the appropriate posts earlier in the blog, and then start deciphering the outlines, beginning with the MVP.
If you don't understand that last line, use this week to learn the exegetical method under introduction to the 7PASSAGES.

TMS John 1:12 Must Receive Christ
Jn 1: 12 But as many as received Him,
to them He gave the right/power to become children of God,
to those who believe in His name:

Observations: 1:12 This is the chiastic center of the prologue to John and serves at the theme of the book. See comments on John 1 for the context.
The TMS uses this verse to show the importance of receiving Christ. The verse equates reception of Christ with belief in His name. "Name" is used in the Scriptures for a person's character, who they are. When referring to God, the "name" has an extended meaning, usually emphasizing His power and glory (synonyms -see 2Cor 5 Digging Deeper). Believing in God's name also entails believing in all He said or promised He'll do, because His character is totally trustworthy. The result of accepting/believing is that one receives the right/power/authority to become God's children, and thus heirs of all His promises.

Application: If you believe, and are born again as God's child, you are on your way to receiving all God's promised. Don't mess it up (see Romans 6).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thanks for making it possible to become one of Your children, with all the rights and privileges thereof; may I draw on Your power to grow and become all You want me to be.  Amen.

Romans 6a Outline (See Study Guide under original Romans 6 post)
1a What shall we say then?
1b Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
2a Certainly not!
2b How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

3a Or do you not know
3b that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus
3c were baptized into His death?

4a Therefore we were buried with Him
4b through baptism
4c into death,
4d that just as Christ was raised from the dead
4e by dia the glory of the Father,
4f even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5a For if we have been united together
5b in the likeness of His death,
5c certainly we also shall be (united with Him- ellipsis)
5d in the likeness of His resurrection,

6a knowing this,
6b that our old man was crucified with Him,
6c that the body of sin might be done away with,
6d that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

7a For he who has died
7b has been freed from sin.

8a Now if we died with Christ,
8b we believe
8c that we shall also live with Him,

9a knowing that Christ,
9b having been raised from the dead,
9c dies no more.
9c Death no longer has dominion over Him.

10a For the death that He died,
10b He died to sin
10c once for all;
10d but the life that He lives,
10e He lives to God.

11a Likewise you also,
11b reckon yourselves
11c to be dead indeed to sin,
11d but alive to God
11e in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12a Therefore do not let sin reign
12b in your mortal body,
12c that you should obey it
12d in its lusts.

A. The Correct Result of / Response to experiencing God’s forgiving grace and gracious plan is to no longer live in sin
A1. 1a Believers should respond to God’s forgiving grace and gracious plan.
A2. 1b The Content of Paul’s question is should forgiven believers continue in sin that grace may abound?
A3. 2a The Content of Paul’s exhortation is that believers should not continue in sin that justifying grace might increase to forgive our sin
A4. 2b The Reason believers should not continue to practice sin is because those who have died to sin shouldn’t continue to live in it

B. 3 The Reason believers should live as dead to sin is because they should know that everyone baptized into Christ was also baptized into His death
B1. 3a Believers should base their lives on knowledge
B2. 3b-c The Content of what believers should base their lives upon is that all who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death
B2a. 3b The Ones who were baptized into His death are all who were baptized into Christ Jesus
B2b. 3c People were baptized into His death

C. 4 The Result of being baptized into Christ and His death is that we should walk according to our new (eternal?) life by God’s power
C1. 4a Believers were buried with Christ
C2. 4b The Means by which Believers were buried with Christ is through baptism
C3. 4c The Result of Believers being buried with Christ is death OR Manner of baptism is into death

C4a-2. 4e The Means by which Christ was raised from the dead was by? the glory of the Father,
C4b. 4f Believers should walk in newness of life.=svp

D. 5 The Reason believers should walk according to their new identity is because of the certainty of sharing in Christ’s resurrection.
D1. 5a-b The Reason believers will surely be united together with Christ in His resurrection is because they have been united in His death
5a Believers have been united together with Christ = ssvp
5b The Sphere in which we were united together is in the likeness of His death,
D2. 5c-e The Sphere in which believers will surely be united together with Christ is in the likeness of His resurrection
D2a. 5c The Manner in which we were united together is certainly
D2b. 5d We also shall be (united with Him- ellipsis) = SVP
D2c. 5e The Sphere in which we will be united together is in the likeness of His resurrection,

E. 6 The Reason believers can walk according to their new identity is because we are free from the reign of sin
E1. 6a Believers should base their lives on knowledge
E2. 6b The Content of what believers should know is that their old man/humanity/identity/nature/inclination was crucified with Christ
E3. 6c The Purpose of the old man being crucified with Christ is that the body of sin might be destroyed/inoperative
E4. 6d The Purpose of the body of sin being destroyed is so that we do not serve sin as its slaves.

F. 7 The Reason (Paul can say) we are free from sin (no longer slaves) is because anyone who has died to sin is free from its rule
F1. 7a The One who ahs been freed from sin is the who has died
F2. 7b Someone has been freed from sin.

G. 8 The Result of dying to sin and being freed from its rule is living with the living Christ
G1. 8a The Reason we believe we will live with Christ is because we died with Christ (our future is tied up with His)
G2. 8b Believers believe
G3. 8c The Content of what we believe is that we shall also live with Christ

H. 9 The Reason we believe we will live with Christ is because death does not have dominion over Him
H1. 9a The Content of what believers know is that death no longer has dominion over Christ
H2. 9b The Time when/Reason Christ dies no more is after/because He was raised from the dead,
H3. 9c Christ dies no more.
H4. 9c The Reason/Result of Christ dying no more is because/that death no longer has dominion over Him.

I. 10 The Reason death does not have dominion over Christ (and those united with Him) is because He died to sin and lives to God
I1. 10a Christ died = vp#1
I2. 10b The Result of Christ’s death is that Christ died to sin
I3. 10c The Manner of Christ death to sin was at one point in time
I4. 10d Christ lives =vp#2
I5. 10e The Result of Christ living is that He lives to God.

J. 11 The Result of Christ dying to sin and being alive to God is that believers should consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ
J1. 11a The Manner in which believers should consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God is as Christ was dead and alive
J2. 11b Believers should consider/reckon/count as true-accurate yourselves =vp
J3. 11c The Thing which believers should reckon themselves to be is dead indeed to sin
J4. 11d The Thing which believers should reckon themselves to be is alive with respect/reference to God
J5. 11e The Sphere/Means in/by which believers should reckon themselves to be is alive to God is in/by Christ Jesus our Lord.

K. 12 The Result of believers considering themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ is that they should not let sin reign over them.
K1. 12a Believers should not let sin reign
K2. 12b The Sphere in which believers should not let sin reign is in their mortal bodies
K3. 12c The Purpose of believers not letting sin reign is so that they do not obey it
K4. 12d The Sphere/Means in/by which believers should not obey sin is in/by its lusts/desires

Romans 6b Outline
12a Therefore do not let sin reign
12b in your mortal body,
12c that you should obey it
12d in its lusts.

13a And do not present your members
13b as instruments of unrighteousness to sin,
13c but present yourselves to God
13d as being alive from the dead,
13e and your members
13f as instruments of righteousness to God.

14a For sin shall not have dominion over you,
14b for you are not under law
14c but under grace.

15a What then? Shall we sin
15b because we are not under law but under grace?
15c Certainly not!

16a Do you not know
16b that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey,
16c whether of sin leading to death,
16d or of obedience leading to righteousness?

17a But God be thanked
17b that though you were slaves of sin,
17c yet you obeyed
17d from the heart
17e that form of doctrine
17f to which you were delivered.

18a And having been set free from sin,
18b you became slaves of righteousness.

19a I speak in human terms
19b because of the weakness of your flesh.
19c For just as you presented your members
19d as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness
19e leading to more lawlessness,
19f so now present your members
19g as slaves of righteousness
19h for holiness.

20a For when you were slaves of sin,
20b you were free
20c in regard to righteousness.

21a What fruit did you have then
21b in the things of which you are now ashamed?
21c For the end of those things is death.

22a But now having been set free from sin,
22b and having become slaves of God,
22c you have your fruit to holiness,
22d and the end, everlasting life.

23a For the wages of sin is death,
23b but the gift of God is eternal life
23c in Christ Jesus our Lord.

B3a. 13e Believers should present their members
B3b. 13f The Manner in which believers should present their members is as instruments of righteousness to God.

makes you their slave
D2c. 16e The Result of yielding yourself to sin is death
D2d. 16f The Result of yielding yourself to obedience is righteousness

E. 17-18 The Reason believers should yield themselves to God is because He graciously pardoned their service of sin, and enables them to serve Him wholeheartedly.

E1. 17a God should be thanked (God is gracious)
E2. 17b-18 The Reason God is gracious is because the ones who wholeheartedly obeyed and served the gospel of righteousness (leading to eternal reward) are those who were formerly wholehearted slaves of sin.

F2b. 19g The Manner in which Believers should yield/present their members (to God) is as slaves of righteousness
F2c. 19h The Result of Believers yielding their members to righteous is holiness.

G. 20-23 The Reason believers should yield themselves to God rather than sin is because the result of serving sin is shame and death while the result of serving God is righteousness which He rewards in His kingdom.

G1. 20-21 The Reason believers should yield themselves to God is because when they were slaves of sin, they shamefully missed righteousness and reaped death.

Ephesians 1 Eternal Plan of God

Ephesians 1  Eternal Plan of God

Psalm 145:1-21 God Fulfills the Desires of Those Who Fear Him
Ps 145:1 Of David “I will exalt you, my God, the King. I will bless your name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless you. I will praise your name forever and ever. 3 Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable. 4 One generation will commend your works to another, and will declare your mighty acts. 5 Of the glorious majesty of your honour, of your wondrous works, I will meditate. 6 Men will speak of the might of your awesome acts. I will declare your greatness. 7 They will utter the memory of your great goodness, and will sing of your righteousness. 8 Yahweh is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and of great hesed/loyal covenantal love. 9 Yahweh is good to all. His tender mercies are over all his works.
10 All your works will give thanks to you, Yahweh. Your saints will bless you. 11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom, and talk about your power; 12 to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, the glory of the majesty of his kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. Your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. 14 Yahweh upholds all who fall, and raises up all those who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. 16 You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 Yahweh is righteous in all his ways, and gracious in all his works. 18 Yahweh is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. 19 He will fulfil the desire of those who fear him. He also will hear their cry, and will save them. 20 Yahweh preserves all those who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. 21 My mouth will speak the praise of Yahweh. Let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever."

Observations: 145:1-9 This is perhaps my favorite psalm (and not just because it is an acrostic psalm, with each verse starting with a consecutive letter of the Hebrew alphabet). David's blessing of the God who blesses us, is born out of his intimate relationship with Him. The first half focuses a little more on praise, the second on thanksgiving. Although the two activities overlap, praise is concerned a little more with the character of God, which He reveals in His revelation (e.g., Exodus 34) and acts. Contemplating what He has done leads to an understanding of who He is. Praise is not mindless mouthing of words, but arises from understanding the person of God. The mighty acts in the OT would encompass everything from deliverance from Egypt and enemies, to peace and prosperity under His ruler/dominion/kingdom in the promised land, to His guaranteed promises in the future. The purpose of praise is to exalt God in the eyes of others, so they too can know Him, and thus praise Him. Each generation has the responsibility to experience God as He truly is, and pass on that relationship to the next generation so they can trust and praise Him. If you have no memories of God to pass on, you'd better start making some.
145:10-21 Those who know God, talk of His ways, because they walk in them. They thank God for how He hears their cry and answers them, saving them not just form their own sins, but from those of others and the difficulties of being human in a fallen world. But the most incredible thing is that God cares about our desires, and has a plan to fulfill them! After all, He created us with desires and knows how best to satisfy them, because He wants us to trust Him, and then thank and praise Him when He delivers. Satan tries to deceive us into desiring the wrong things, but the corrective is to hold all desires with an open hand. We just need to fear God, pray (according to His will), letting Him know that we know He knows our needs and desires, then be in a position for Him to bless us, and finally wait until God gives what's best, when it's best. When He answers, bless His name, with thanksgiving and praise (even if the answer is no, because God just spared you from something that is not good, which you would live to regret if you had it).
Application: Remember to hold every desire with an open hand, God can't give you what's best when You're clutching onto second or third best. In fact a good God won't give you what's bad for you. Only you can ruin your life.
Prayer: Holy God, I trust in Your infinite wisdom and goodness; thanks that You have in Your hand anything I could desire, and You will give it to me if it's best, and when it's best; otherwise I don't want it, and am totally satisfied with You, and You alone. Thanks for being so good. Amen.

TMS Romans 6:23 Consequence of Sin is Death
Rom 6:23 “(22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life/dominion of the Age.

23 For the wages of sin is death, (loss of dominion)
but the gift (gracething) of God is eternal life (dominion of the Age)
in (union with) Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Observations: Rom 6:23 This verse is the second stop on the “Roman Road” to salvation (after 3:23, along with 5:8 and 10:9-10, and some toss in 5:1 or 8:1 at no extra charge). The principles are valid (depending on how they're presented) but not necessarily in context. Most of the verses (except for 3:23) are not talking about justification/forgiveness of sin. See observations in posts on the corresponding chapters in Romans for the full context. Our verse (6:23) above is in the sanctification section of Romans, but does make a good point that sin (independence from God) leads to loss (death). Death is sometimes called separation from God, which isn't a bad concept evangelistically, but exegetically, it is a loss of the glory and dominion Christ wants to share with them in His kingdom. So it is something to cure and avoid.
Application: All independence from God (sin) results in loss, either temporal or eternal, so why would anyone chose to be a loser?
Prayer: God, thanks for Your grace, and that You set me free from sin so I can profitably serve You; may I do so completely. Amen.

Ephesians 1 The epistle to the Ephesians, the best taught church in the NT, is a blueprint for believers to develop the unity that glorifies God. The first chapter provides a sweeping overview of God's plan in creation, and our role in it, consisting of a hymn of praise and a prayer. Like a psalm, he exhorts his audience to bless God because He has blessed us. Then Paul elaborates, showing how the Trinity worked together in a unified manner in securing our salvation: the Father selected us, the Son saved us, and the Spirit seals us. The purpose is for the praise of the glory of His grace, the repeated refrain. The prayer draws out the implications of God's plan, and the rest of the book elaborates on the three main requests of Paul's prayer (in chiastic order), and the book ends how the Body stands in unity against the schemes of Satan who seeks to disrupt that unity and derail the display of God's glory in the NT temple, the church. Throughout the book the Holy Spirit builds the unity which Satan attempts to destroy. As believers respond to God's Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, and live in love, God's purposes will be furthered. This chapter is so important to understand that it's the only one in this post. There is a topical survey of our inheritance under Digging Deeper that you really should grasp if you hope to receive all the blessings God has in store for you. There is a blow up chart at the end of the post.

Ephesians 1 Eternal Plan of God
1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ;
4 even as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and without blemish before him in love
5 having pre-determined us for/with a view to (eis) adoption/sonship through Jesus Christ to himself,
according to the good pleasure of his will,
6 to the praise of the glory of his grace,
by which he highly favored us in the Beloved,
7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
8 which he made to abound toward us in/by all wisdom and prudence,
9 making known to us the mystery of his will,
according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him
10 with a view to the dispensation/administration of the fulness of the times,
to sum up all things in Christ,
the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him;
11 in whom also we have an inheritance,
having been pre-determined according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his will;
12 to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had first hoped in Christ:
13 in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation
in whom, having also believed,
you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
14 who is a pledge/downpayment of our inheritance,
until the redemption of God’s own possession,
to the praise of his glory.
15 For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you,
and the love which you have toward all the saints,
16 don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in/by the experiential knowledge of him;
18 having the eyes of your hearts having been enlightened,
that you may know what is the hope of his calling,
and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe,
according to that working of the strength of his might
20 which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead,
and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come,
22 And He put all things in subjection under his feet,
and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly,
23 which is his body, the fulness of him who fills all in all.

Observations: 1:1-2 Paul addresses the believers at Ephesus who he describes as “saints” (holy ones) and faithful in Christ. He wishes them the covenantal blessings of grace and peace, and writes the letter so they can reap them.
1:3-6 Believers should bless (praise) God for His blessings of us (just like the Psalms). Paul gives us a general proposition in verse 3, that in union with Christ, we have every spiritual blessing in the “heavenlies” (better translated heavenly realms), and then give the particulars according to the outline in the introduction above.
The Father chose us, in union with Christ, to be holy and blameless in love. This is the concept of “election” but it is corporate (the emphasis of the book) not individual, and to sanctification and heirship/glorification, not forgiveness/justification. The plan of God, before He created the world, was to have a family of sons/daughters, in union with Christ, whom He could bless. We're not told exactly why until Paul's prayer in 3:10. Some modern translations put “In love” with the following verse (which could be legitimate since there are no verse divisions in the original) but this placement of love misses the mark on five counts. First, the modifiers always follow, not precede what they modify in the hymn (just like this phrase does); second, if you know how to do an exegetical outline, (see sidebar) the manner or motive of the verb in verse 5 is “according to the pleasure of His will” not “in love” (it's redundant, and definitely not Paul's style, to use a “nuance” (manner/motive) twice, unless it's in a sequential list); third, throughout the rest of the book, “in love” refers to human love, not God's; fourth, the theme of the book is for believers to live in love, obeying Jesus' new commandment, that they love one another (and Paul will structure the letter to help them do that), fifth, when Christ evaluates the church in Revelation 2:4 He will rebuke them for disobeying His command and leaving their first love, which is the basis of their testimony (which they are about to lose -see comments there). God's plan is to have a group of choice believers display His unity and love to the world, by living in unity and love with each other. Thus His purpose in choosing them is to be holy and blameless with respect to love for each other.
In choosing us God pre-determined (determined/mark out boundaries, ahead of time) that we should be heirs (adopted as sons -Gal 4; Rom 8) through Christ, in accord with the pleasure of His will (He wanted to). God did this so the glory/display of His grace/power would be praised, with which He highly favored us (only used in Lk 1:28) in Christ.
1:7-9 In union with Christ we have (present possession) redemption by means of His blood, the forgiveness of sins (this is the usual justification aspect of salvation that pays our debt so we don't have to). Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins (Heb 9:22; sin results in death; life is in the blood; Christ's blood is shed instead of ours). This redemption is unmerited favor or grace (this is one of the few usages of grace in that sense – see Survey of Grace on Truthbase.net), which will be explained more in chapter 2. God caused this grace to come to us according to His wise plan, described next. God made known to the apostles (and those who heard them) the mystery (previously unrevealed truth), explained more in 3:3-7, that the Jews and Gentiles are co-heirs in the Messiah's kingdom.
1:10-12 This revelation of the mystery is according to God's pleasure, which He purposed in Christ, with a view to the administration or management (dispensation) of the fullness times (culmination of the times). The governing rubric of the period toward which all previous times have been building is the summing up of all things under one Head (that's what anakephalaiomai means), that is Christ. This summation encompasses things in heaven (angels) and earth. This hasn't happened yet, but is the purpose of the Father selecting people/us for adoption/heirship, and the son saving people/us.
As a result of God's plan to have Christ be head over an administration/kingdom of all things, believers in union with Christ have an inheritance. The basis of our inheritance is that we've been pre-determined to be part of God's purpose, who works everything together as part of His plan so that we, those who have receive His inheritance, should be to the praise of His glory. Paul further clarifies the heirs as those who hope (literally “who have hoped ahead of time”) in Christ.
1:13-14 In union with Christ, those who heard the word of truth, the good news/gospel of their salvation (in all its aspects), and believed it, were sealed (see on 2Cor 1:22; Eph 4:30) with the Holy Spirit which God and Christ had promised. Note the progression: hear, believe, sealed. No mention of anything else (like repentance, baptism, circumcision, etc). The Holy Spirit is the first installment or down payment of our inheritance. Which has two direct implications: first, there is more to come; and second, our inheritance will consist of more of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Glory and Power (restoration to glory -see on 2Corinthians 5, especially under Digging Deeper). This down payment is what we receive until the redemption of God's inheritance (glorification of our bodies - see note on Romans 8:23). Just like Israel was called His inheritance in the OT (like in Ps 78:62 above), so too NT believers are His treasured possession. God gives those who hear the truth, and believe in Him, His Holy Spirit to seal and protect them, let them know that there is more to come, their inheritance. All this is to the praise of His glory (manifestation of Himself, His purpose, power, and grace -Ex 34). A correct understanding of our inheritance is crucial in order to gain it, so spend time going though the outline under Digging Deeper, which is a topical study on our inheritance as believers. Paul will talk more about it later in this epistle.
1:15-18a Because God has a plan to give an inheritance to (reward/glorify) believers Paul prays that God would give them some insight into the dynamics. Paul heard of the faith which the Ephesians had in the Lord Jesus, and of the love which they had toward all the saints. So what he will say in the letter is not to have them believe that Jesus died for their sins, but has something to do to the above, getting their planned inheritance. God is glorified when He can pour out His glory upon His faithful saints, for it shows just how much glory He has. So Paul prays that God, the Father of the Lord Jesus the Messiah, would give them a spirit of wisdom (choosing the right objectives and the right means of attaining them) and revelation (insight according to the Scriptures of what those objective and means should be) by means of the experiential knowledge of God. The purpose of this knowledge is not to know God better (cx NIV) but so that we'd know the three items in 1:18-19. The normal word for knowledge is gnosis, but here Paul uses epignosis, experiential knowledge. You might have gnosis about how to ride a bicycle (sit on seat, feet on pedals, move feet-bike go, steer with hands), but unless you've actually ridden one, you don't have epignosis. Unless you've experienced the results of trusting and obeying God, you don't have epignosis of Him.
The reason God can give believers a spirit of wisdom and revelation (cf Isaiah 11:2) is because the eyes of their heart have already been enlightened (perfect passive participle, referring to their regeneration). The light had dawned upon them, and they had turned to it, and received it (Jn 1:4-12).
1:18b-19 The three things Paul prays the believers would know as a result of gaining revelation (which he is going to give them in the rest of the book) are:
the hope which accompanies their calling (which he'll describe beginning in chapter 4);
the riches of the glory of the inheritance among the saints (which he elaborates on in chapter 3);
the greatness of the power/grace, according to the working of His might, which is available to those who believe (which he begins to elaborate upon next, and in chapter 2). Chiastic structure!
1:20-23 God first demonstrates His power in Christ (and chapter 2 will show how he demonstrates it in believers), in four ways , by
  1. raising Christ from the dead;
  2. seating Christ in the heavenly realms at His right hand (the place of honor for the guy who was going to rule the conquered territory), far above all angelic and demonic powers (see chapter 6) and every name/power in this age and also in the Age to come (the Messianic Age);
  3. putting all things in subjection under the feet of Christ, as in 1Corinthians 15:24-28 (in a victory triumph the last stage was to bring all the captured kings and leaders and have them acknowledge the supremacy of the conqueror by putting (or being forced to put) their neck under the Victor's feet (who could either destroy them or let them live as a vassal);
  4. giving Christ as head over all things for the Church.
Wait a minute! If all things are already in subjection to Christ, why would special mention have to be made about the church? Paul's prayer in Ephesians 1 was the very first passage on which I did an exegetical outline. It took me over a hundred hours (and I still didn't know what I was doing; I just knew I was less wrong than anything I read). Eventually I found out what one of Paul's traveling buddies had said about the subject in
Hebrews 2:5 “For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels....8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet." For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.”
We don't yet see Jesus ruling in His glory. It's like He won the election, but has not yet begun to exercise His office as Messiah of the world to come. The world doesn't yet see the victory and glory and rule of the Lord Jesus, the Messiah. So how is God's glory manifested to the world?
God gave Jesus as head over the church, which is His body in this world. Most translations indicate the church is the fulness of Him who fills all in all (whatever that means). If you understand that fulness means control (as in be filled with the Spirit in 5:18) then it's more likely that Paul is describing the process of God filling or controlling the Body of believers, much like His glory filled the temple in the OT. As God's glory dwelt in the midst of an obedient Israel in the OT, so now God's glory dwells in the midst of the unified Body of believers (cf 2:21-22; 3:20-21). That unity is only possible when believers live under the control of God's power/grace. This is the theme that Paul will teach in the rest of the Book.
Application: Believers need to live in light of the future God has planned for them so His glory can be seen and praised.
Prayer: Gracious God, I praise You for all You've done in selecting, saving, and sealing me; may I know You and how You want me to live to fulfill Your purposes for my life. Amen.

10. Pressing on without regression Phil 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. 15 All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained.
11. Fighting, finishing, keeping and loving I Tim 4:7 not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 6:12

D. PAIN
1. Suffering 2Ti 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign: if we deny, he also will deny us: Rom 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs - heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.
2. Maturity reaped from suffering 2:10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
3. Losing your life Mat 16:24 Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.
4. Being persecuted Lk 6:23...leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how...treated the prophets.
II Sam 22:21; Ps 19:11; 58:11; Pv 11:18; 13:13; 22:4 The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor and life.

IV. Our Inheritance is not automatic and can be lost or forfeited through:

A. Failing to watch 2Jn 8 Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.
B. Failing to maintain righteousness 1Cor 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
C. Being gullible Col 2:18 Let no man defraud/beguile you of your reward
D. Living for this world Eph 5:5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person - such a man is an idolater - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
E. Feeding the flesh/desire for the temporal Gal 5:19 works of the flesh: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 10 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, wrath, contention, seditions, heresies, 21 envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like...as I have also told [you] in time past, that they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
F. Looking for man's approval Mt 6:1 Take heed...before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you have no reward from the Father
F. Failure to value it Heb 12:17 when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance...
G. Lack of encouragement/holding Heb 3:12-14 ...share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first (3:6).

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. Is your inheritance something for which you bless God? Why? Why not?
2. Does the modern church have the same emphasis on gaining inheritance as did the early church?
3. Would a review of your past week find more "laying up" (#III) or "losing it" (#IV) activities?
4. What helps you do/not do the more difficult things listed above?
5. What could we at BAC do to help you gain a full inheritance?

God in a nutshell: God has a plan to glorify Himself through the blessing of believers under the Headship of Christ in the Millennial Kingdom of the Messiah. To that end, He planned that there would be a group of faithful sons/daughters to share in Christ's glory, sent Jesus to die so people could have a relationship with Him, and then sent His Spirit in their hearts as the first installment of that future glory.

Build-a-Jesus: Jesus died for our sins, so we could be redeemed/saved, and is the future ruler of the world to come. In the meantime, He exercises His rule over faithful believers who are rightly related to Him and each other as members of His Body.

Us in a nutshell: We have the requirement to be holy and blameless in love in order to share in the glory of the Lord of love, Jesus. To that end we need to know the power available to us to live as God desires, and reap the reward He has planned.
