This sermon will be posted on Truthbase.net within a couple of days. It looks at some of the Messianic prophecies in Isaiah, their application to the original audience, and then considers how they apply to believers today.

I. Hope is given so we will trust God rather than X. Background 2Kg 16; 2Chron 28 Seek our will or His will Eph 5:10,17
Isa 7:3 son 4...'Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted...7 Thus says the Lord God " It shall not stand, Nor shall it come to pass. 8 Within 65 years Ephraim will be broken, so that it will not be a people 9...If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established. 11 "Ask a sign for yourself from the LORD your God" 12 But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, nor will I put to test Yahweh!" 13 "Hear now, O house of David! (2Sam7) Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel. 16 For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings. 17 The LORD will bring the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your father's house"
Isa 8:3 Then I went to the prophetess, she conceived and bore a son. "Call his name Baz; 4 for before the child shall have knowledge to cry 'My father' and 'My mother,' the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria."
6 "Since these people refused the waters of Shiloah...7 therefore, the Lord brings over them the River, strong and mighty - king of Assyria and all his glory; 8...Will fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel (cont'd to 9:7) 10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; speak the word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.

Mt 1:20...is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel" which is translated "God with us"
Lk 1:3...call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

Isa 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace, the mind stayed on You, because he trusts in You. 4 Trust in Yahweh forever, for in Yah, is everlasting strength.

Just like Ahaz had self-sufficient plans and rejected the first sign/child/Immanuel, (which would find its acceptance in the Messianc kingdom), so Israel rejected the first sign/child/Immanuel, (which will find its acceptance/fulfillment in the Messianic kingdom).

II. Light is given so we can walk in it. Jn 8:12 I am the light...follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life"
Isaiah 9:1...in Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light (2:3,5; 8:20); who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined. 3 You have multiplied the nation and increased its joy; They rejoice before You acc to the joy of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4 For You have broken the yoke of his burden...Midian
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Isa 2:5 O house of Jacob, come and let us walk in the light of Yahweh (cf 2:3)

Mt 4:16 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (Ps 119:130) 1Jn 1:7 if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

III. The Spirit is given so we can live in Him. Gal 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
11:1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, ihe Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge (Pr 1:7) and of the fear of the LORD. 3 His delight is in the fear of the LORD, and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; 4 but with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, and faithfulness the belt of His waist.

10 "in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse (Rm 15:12; Rev 5:5), Who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him, and His resting place shall be glorious." 11 In that day the Lord shall set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people who are left, from Assyria and Egypt...Cush....and the islands of the sea. 12 He will set up a banner for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. Rm 15:6-13 unity that glorifies God

Mt 3:16...baptized...saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.17...”My beloved son, in whom I am well-pleased”
Mt 12:18 "Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles...He sends forth justice to victory;21 and in His name Gentiles will trust." [Isa 42:1-7] Rm 8:13
2Thess 2:8 lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:
1. Why do people want a sign or put God to the test? What are they testing? Do signs cause belief? Mt 12:39; Lk 16:31
2. What's the point of prophecy? What did the HS want the original audience to do in response? What does he want a NT audience to do?
3. How do you know you're trusting in God? What else do people hope/trust in for security & success? How do His will & your will correspond?
4. How does someone walk in the light/HS? Do all believers walk in the light/HS? What differentiates those who do from those who don't?
5. How do hope, light, and the Spirit show up in your life? How do you demonstrate righteousness and justice in your dealings with others?
