TMS 1 John 5:13 Assurance of Salvation

1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe
in the name of the Son of God,
that you may know that you have eternal life,
and that you may continue to believe
In the name of the Son of God.

Observations: 5:13 Doubt is one of Satan's favorite tools to keep believers from following Christ. If he can get them to wonder about whether or not they're saved, or if God really meant what He said, of if they did what it takes, then he keeps them from getting on the path and following God's will for their life. Frequently he accuses believers of their sin, of not being perfect as a way to turn guilt into doubt to alleviate the cognitive dissonance. Rest assured that God doesn't expect His new born children to be instantly mature, and Christ died for all our sins, including those we commit after becoming believers. God gives eternal life (dominion of the Age) to those who believe in Christ and are born again. It's the inheritance that is theirs by birthright. Now the choice is to be a good kid or a bad kid. The good kids continue to believe, and please Christ (2Cor 5:9-10); the bad kids get cut off from blessing (1Cor 6:9). See Survey of Inheritance if you have any doubts.

Application: If you believe, that Jesus died for your sins (and understand that the Father accepts His death as full payment) then you are saved/justified. Now the task is to continue to believe the promises of a God who cannot lie.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thanks for the gift of salvation and eternal life; may I continue to believe all You've revealed and promised. Amen.

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus,

who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

3a For what the law could not do

3b-c in that it was weak through the flesh,

3d-f God did
by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin:

3g He condemned sin in the flesh,

4a that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us

4b-c who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5 For those who live according to the flesh

set their minds on the things of the flesh,

but those who live according to the Spirit,

the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death,

but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.

Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin,

but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,

He who raised Christ from the dead

will also give life to your mortal bodies

through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors——not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Romans 8a Outline
A. 1a-d (Therefore) The Result of Rm 7:6etc - dying to the law and being married to Christ (with an obligation to serve according to the Spirit so that we should bear fruit to God) - Paul exhorts the Ones in Christ Jesus to whom there is no condemnation to live their lives NOT according to the promptings of their temporal desires, but according to the promptings of the eternal Spirit.

A1. 1a There is no condemnation now
A2. 1b The Ones to Whom there is no condemnation are to those who are in Christ Jesus,
A3. 1c-d The Ones who are in Christ Jesus OR the Ones in Christ Jesus to whom there is no condemnation are those who do not live their lives according to the promptings of their temporal desires, but according to the promptings of the eternal Spirit.
A3a. 1c The Manner in which some do not walk/live is according to the flesh
A3b. 1d The Manner in which some do walk is according to the Spirit.

B. 2 The Reason for believers to live according to the Spirit rather than the flesh (or there is no condemnation) is because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death.

C. 3-4 The Reason the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death is because God condemned sin in the flesh so the righteous requirements of the law might be fulfilled in Spirit led believers.
C1. 3a The Content of what the law could not do is to condemn/destroy/annul sin in order to cause the righteous requirement of the law to be fulfilled in believers (necessary to receive promised blessing).

E1. 6a-b The Reason one needs to be focused on the Spirit is because carnality leads to death and spirituality leads to life and peace
E1a. 6a The Result of a carnal mindset is death (E1 could be E1b but E2 must modify it)

E4b-2. 9e Someone is not Christ’s OR of Christ=SVP (genitive=possessed by, sourced in, belonging to)
