Psalm 34:1-10 Lov'n It Better Than A Lion

Ps 34:1 “I will bless Yahweh at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make its boast in Yahweh; The humble shall hear of it and be glad. 3 Oh, magnify Yahweh with me, And let us exalt His name together. 4 I sought Yahweh, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. 5 They looked to Him and were radiant, And their faces were not ashamed. 6 This poor man cried out, and Yahweh heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of Yahweh encamps all around those who fear Him,  And delivers them. 8 Oh, taste and see that Yahweh is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! 9 Oh, fear Yahweh, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. 10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing. 

Observations: David blessed, praised, magnified and exalted Yahweh, because in a fearful situation he sought God, and He delivered. Note the occurrences of fear, the basis for deliverance.

34:2 The humble are those whose prayers aren't being answered and are at the temple praying. They would hear of God blessing David and be encouraged to persevere in seeking Him. 

34:8 Try trusting, you'll like it. Our trust is rooted in the infinite goodness of the Almighty God.

34:9-10 Even mighty lions experience lack but our infinitely good God makes sure that those who fear him lack no good thing.

Application: If we're fearing, trusting, and seeking God, then if we don't have whatever we lack, it isn't good for us at this time. This is a great Psalm to meditate on (a lot).

Prayer: O God who hears and delivers and is infinitely good, You are so trustworthy that I do not fear anything or anyone but You. Amen.

Proverbs 9:13-18 Pick a Path to Pleasure or Pain

Pr 9:13 “(1 Wisdom has built her house. She has carved out her seven pillars. 2 She has prepared her meat. She has mixed her wine. She has also set her table. 3 She has sent out her maidens. She cries from the highest places of the city: 4 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" 10 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy one is understanding. 11 For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.) 

13 The foolish woman is loud, undisciplined, and knows nothing. 14 She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city, 15 To call to those who pass by, who go straight on their ways, 16 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here." as for him who is void of understanding, she says to him, 17 "Stolen water is sweet. Food eaten in secret is pleasant." 18 But he doesn’t know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.“

Observations: 9:1-11 To get the greater benefit of the end of this proverb you need to see it in its context. Both wisdom and folly call out to the simple. Wisdom has built a house and labored over a feast to share; she has organization and discipline and authority. Her servants call from the highest places of the city (where civil and supernatural authority reside). Wisdom has words that extend and enrich life.

9:13-18 Folly has nothing but a loud mouth; she lacks discipline and knowledge. Yet she too seeks to influence the leaders and the common man. She offers words that lead to death, but cloaks them in sensual appeal. The one who doesn't fear God and listens to folly won't live to regret it; because they will die.

Application: Consider the source and fruits of wisdom and folly, then choose wisely. The consequences are permanent.

Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to see clearly the consequences of wisdom and folly, and give me the grace to choose the way of wisdom rather than the path of passion and pain. Amen.

Joshua 13-17 These chapters record the initial conquest and incomplete possession of the land. We also get a great profile of Caleb. Don't miss it.

Joshua 13 Conquer vs Possess

13:1 Now Joshua was old and well advanced in years. Yahweh said to him, "You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed. 2 "This is the land that still remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all the Geshurites...5 and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon...6 all the inhabitants of the hill country...them I will drive out from before the children of Israel: only allocate it to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.

7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance...12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (who was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for Moses attacked these, and drove them out. 13 Nevertheless the children of Israel didn’t drive out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day. 14 Only he gave no inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The offerings of Yahweh, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spoke to him. 22 The children of Israel also killed Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, with the sword, among the rest of their slain.

Observations: 13:1 Possessed is different from conquered. Although Israel had destroyed the major kings, armies, and cities, there still remained territories to inherit, and pockets of pagans, which the Israelites had the responsibility to remove. God had said He would drive out little by little (Ex 23:27-10) so the wilderness wouldn't take over the land. Israel would continue to experience God's blessings if they obeyed in this matter. Tragically, failure to scrupulously obey ultimately resulted in forfeiture of blessings.

13:6,13 Note the relationship between God driving them out (Plan A) and the Israelites failing to obey in driving them out (Plan B). Divine plan and human responsibility.

Numbers 33:55 "But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those you let remain of them will be as pricks in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will harass you in the land in which you dwell.”

13:12 Og and the Rephaim were giants.

13:22 records the payback for seeking to bring harm upon God's people.

Application: We must not interpret God's blessing as our blamelessness. A parent might be pleased that their two year old is no longer putting peas in their ears or mashed potatoes in their hair, there is still a lot of growth necessary for maturity.

Prayer: Gracious God, thanks for Your blessings, and Your commitment to my continual growth and maturity. Amen.

Joshua 14 Caleb's Secret of Success

14:1 These are the inheritances which the children of Israel took in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed to them, 2 by the lot of their inheritance, as Yahweh commanded by Moses...5 The children of Israel did as Yahweh commanded Moses, and they divided the land.

6 Then the children of Judah drew near to Joshua in Gilgal. Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the thing that Yahweh spoke to Moses the man of God concerning me and you in Kadesh Barnea. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Yahweh sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. I brought him word again as it was in my heart. 8 Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed Yahweh my God. 9 Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land where you walked shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have wholly followed Yahweh my God.’ 10 "Now, behold, Yahweh has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. Now, behold, I am eighty-five years old, today. 11 As yet I am as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now for war, to go out and to come in. 12 Now therefore give me this hill country, of which Yahweh spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and great and fortified cities. It may be that Yahweh will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as Yahweh spoke." 13 Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. 14 Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day; because he wholly followed Yahweh, the God of Israel. 15 Now the name of Hebron before was Kiriath Arba, after the greatest man among the Anakim. The land had rest from war.

Observations: 14:8 The Book of Joshua doesn't record a lot of biographical notes; Rahab and Caleb are notable exceptions thus far. Here Caleb reveals the “secret” of his success – he wholly followed God, as reinforced in 14:14 (See Caleb a Whole-hearted Believer).

14:10-14 How many 85 year olds do you know who want to charge up hills and storm great forts to take on giants? However, he might have been leery of librarians; see next chapter.

Joshua 15 Giant Librarians

15:1 The lot for the tribe of the children of Judah was to the border of Edom, even to the wilderness of Zin southward...2 Their south border was from the uttermost part of the Salt Sea, from the bay that looks southward...12 The west border was to the shore of the great sea. 13 To Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of Yahweh to Joshua, even Kiriath Arba, named after the father of Anak (the same is Hebron). 14 Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak...15 He went up against the inhabitants of Debir/Kiriath Sepher. 16 Caleb said, "He who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife." 17 Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. 18 It happened, when she came, that she had him ask her father for a field. She got off of her donkey, and Caleb said, "What do you want?" 19 She said, "Give me a blessing. Because you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water." He gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

63 As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah couldn’t drive them out; but the Jebusites live with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

Observations: 15:13 Kiriath Arba (Hebron, currently under Palestinian rule) is the highest city in the land given to Israel, under the rule of three giants. Because of its elevation, it would also be home to major demons. Caleb took it in stride, because he trusted in the God who was with him 14:12.

15:15-19 Kiriath Sepher (City of Books/Scribes) aka Debir (Sanctuary), was also giant territory. Possibly because he had an overdue book, Caleb encouraged others to believe and attempt great things for God by offering his daughter Achsah to whomever was brave enough to take on the giant librarians. Based upon the following verses, Achsah was no shrinking violet, and this was a good way to weed out wimpy suitors. His nephew nobly rose to the challenge and lived happily ever after with Achsah and the land and two springs Caleb gave them.

Since Caleb is the kind of person God loves to bless (and literally one in a million) let's review some of his characteristics recorded in these two chapters:

14:7 He had integrity, as was not afraid to go against majority opinion

14:8 He fully followed God, and did not discourage others from doing so

14:9 He remembered God's word (from 45 years ago) and patiently waited for God to fulfill His promises. He submissively asked for permission to take what was his. He was content to play second fiddle to Joshua.

14:10 He was conscious of God's provision for every breath he took

14:11 He recognized that God sustained and strengthened him for His purposes

14:12 He was fearless in doing God's will because he was conscious of God being with Him (which is the result of a clear, obedient conscience)

15:14 He faithfully followed through on God's commands to drive out the giants, taking the toughest job himself

15:16 He encouraged others to demonstrate Hall of Fame faith

15:19 He generously shared God's hard earned blessing with others so they could enjoy God's plan to bless His people. May his tribe increase!

15:63 The chapter ends on an ominous note (echoed in the next two chapers), with Judah failing to follow Caleb's example of relying on God to do their job of driving out the pagans and their influence.

Application: Model your life after Caleb (and return any overdue library books).

Prayer: God of Caleb, may I demonstrate the same whole-hearted obedience of faithfully and fully following You, and facing and annihilating the giants in my life. Amen.

Joshua 16 Ephraim Doesn't Fully Follow

16:1 The lot came out for the children of Joseph from the Jordan at Jericho, at the waters of Jericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel. 5 This was the border of the children of Ephraim 10 They didn’t drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell in the midst of Ephraim to this day, and have become servants to do forced labour.

Joshua 17 Manasseh Doesn't Fully Follow

17:1 This was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh, 12 Yet the children of Manasseh couldn’t drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 13 It happened, when the children of Israel had grown strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and didn’t utterly drive them out.

14 The children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given me just one lot and one part for an inheritance, since I am a great people, because Yahweh has blessed me so far?" 15 Joshua said to them, "If you are a great people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim; since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you." 16 The children of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us. All the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth Shean and its towns, and those who are in the valley of Jezreel." 17 Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, "You are a great people, and have great power. You shall not have one lot only; 18 but the hill country shall be yours. Although it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and it’s farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong."

Observations: The children of Joseph focused on their problems rather than on God's promises, and didn't fully follow God. Sigh.

Digging Deeper:

God in a nutshell: God will bless His people if they do what He says. He will fight and win our battles for us if we do exactly what He says, which will involve obediently facing giants, and swinging the sword, which He energizes. 

Us in a nutshell: We limit God's ability to bless us by our half-hearted obedience. We will always experience the inevitable negative consequences of failure to fully follow God. There is no limit to what God can do through those who wholly follow Him.

The border of the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the end of the Jordan. 6 The border went up to Beth Hoglah, and passed along by the north of Beth Arabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. 7 The border went up to Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is over against the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the river. The border passed along to the waters of En Shemesh, and ended at En Rogel. 8 The border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom to the side of the Jebusite southward (the same is Jerusalem); and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the farthest part of the valley of Rephaim northward. 9 The border extended from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of Mount Ephron; and the border extended to Baalah (the same is Kiriath Jearim); 10 and the border turned about from Baalah westward to Mount Seir, and passed along to the side of Mount Jearim on the north (the same is Chesalon), and went down to Beth Shemesh, and passed along by Timnah; 11 and the border went out to the side of Ekron northward; and the border extended to Shikkeron, and passed along to Mount Baalah, and went out at Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea. 12 The west border was to the shore of the great sea. All the cities are twenty-nine, with their villages. 33 In the lowland, Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah, 34 Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam, 35 Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah, 36 Shaaraim, Adithaim and Gederah (or Gederothaim); fourteen cities with their villages. 37 Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad, 38 Dilean, Mizpeh, Joktheel, 39 Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon, 40 Cabbon, Lahmam, Chitlish, 41 Gederoth, Beth Dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah; sixteen cities with their villages. 42 Libnah, Ether, Ashan, 43 Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib, 44 Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages. 45 Ekron, with its towns and its villages; 46 from Ekron even to the sea, all that were by the side of Ashdod, with their villages. 47 Ashdod, its towns and its villages; Gaza, its towns and its villages; to the brook of Egypt, and the great sea with its coastline. 48 In the hill country, Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, 49 Dannah, Kiriath Sannah (which is Debir), 50 Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, 51 Goshen, Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities with their villages. 52 Arab, Dumah, Eshan, 53 Janim, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah, 54 Humtah, Kiriath Arba (the same is Hebron), and Zior; nine cities with their villages. 55 Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Jutah, 56 Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, 57 Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah; ten cities with their villages. 58 Halhul, Beth Zur, Gedor, 59 Maarath, Beth Anoth, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages. 60 Kiriath Baal (the same is Kiriath Jearim), and Rabbah; two cities with their villages. 61 In the wilderness, Beth Arabah, Middin, Secacah, 62 Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En Gedi; six cities with their villages. 63 As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah couldn’t drive them out; but the Jebusites live with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

Joshua 16

16:1 The lot came out for the children of Joseph from the Jordan at Jericho, at the waters of Jericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel. 2 It went out from Bethel to Luz, and passed along to the border of the Archites to Ataroth; 3 and it went down westward to the border of the Japhletites, to the border of Beth Horon the lower, even to Gezer; and ended at the sea. 4 The children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.

5 This was the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families. The border of their inheritance eastward was Ataroth Addar, to Beth Horon the upper. 6 The border went out westward at Michmethath on the north. The border turned about eastward to Taanath Shiloh, and passed along it on the east of Janoah. 7 It went down from Janoah to Ataroth, to Naarah, reached to Jericho, and went out at the Jordan. 8 From Tappuah the border went along westward to the brook of Kanah; and ended at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim according to their families; 9 together with the cities which were set apart for the children of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages. 10 They didn’t drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell in the midst of Ephraim to this day, and have become servants to do forced labour.

Joshua 17

17:1 This was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. As for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan. 2 So this was for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families: for the children of Abiezer, for the children of Helek, for the children of Asriel, for the children of Shechem, for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families. 3 But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4 They came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, "Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers." Therefore according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. 5 Ten parts fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan; 6 because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.

7 The border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which is before Shechem. The border went along to the right hand, to the inhabitants of En Tappuah. 8 The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim. 9 The border went down to the brook of Kanah, southward of the brook. These cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook, and ended at the sea. 10 Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea was his border. They reached to Asher on the north, and to Issachar on the east. 11 Manasseh had three heights in Issachar, in Asher Beth Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns. 12 Yet the children of Manasseh couldn’t drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 13 It happened, when the children of Israel had grown strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labour, and didn’t utterly drive them out.

14 The children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given me just one lot and one part for an inheritance, since I am a great people, because Yahweh has blessed me so far?" 15 Joshua said to them, "If you are a great people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim; since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you." 16 The children of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us. All the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth Shean and its towns, and those who are in the valley of Jezreel." 17 Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, "You are a great people, and have great power. You shall not have one lot only; 18 but the hill country shall be yours. Although it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and it’s farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong."

Psalm 33:13-22 Hoping in Our Help and Shield

Ps 3:13 (8 Let all the earth fear Yahweh. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.12 Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.) 13 Yahweh looks from heaven. He sees all the sons of men. 14 From the place of his habitation he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, 15 he who fashions all of their hearts; and he considers all of their works. 16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an army. A mighty man is not delivered by great strength. 17 A horse is a vain thing for safety, neither does he deliver any by his great power. 18 Behold, Yahweh’s eye is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his hesed/loyal covenantal love; 19 to deliver their soul from death, to keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul has waited for Yahweh. He is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart rejoices in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. 22 Let your hesed/loyal covenantal love be on us, Yahweh, since we have hoped in you."

Observations: 33:1-12 See post on Leviticus 18 for vv 1-12, God's plan to bless the righteous individuals and nations.

33:12-22 God looks over all He created, and considers their hearts and works. He notices the limitations of temporal power. Those who trust in it will be disappointed. But those who fear God and hope in His hesed will be delivered from danger/death, kept alive in famine, and experience His loyal care of them. Those who trust in His holy name will rejoice.

Application: God's eye looks upon those who look to Him in loyal hope; they will rejoice in His help.

Prayer: God, thanks that You see my needs and are committed to protecting me because I hope and trust in Your promises; may I not look to any other help, except what You provide. Amen.

Proverbs 9:10-12 Knowing and Choosing God's Pleasure

Pr 9:10 “The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy one is understanding. 11 For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased. 12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.”

Observations: 9:10 Those who don't fear God haven't taken the first step on the road to wisdom, and are therefore still fools. Those who know God, what He likes and dislikes, are well on their way to understanding, a word that means to discern between two options. Thus wisdom is choosing the right objectives, among the many options in our world, and the right means of obtaining them. What's right? What pleases God; what's right in His sight.

9:11 On the positive side, choosing what pleases God results in an abundant life, which pleases us.

9:12 On the negative side, choosing what just pleases us, scorning wisdom, is mocking God. That results in consequences we must bear, which aren't enjoyable. The parallelism would indicate a short painful life, in which death is almost a welcome relief (until you consider what awaits the fools).

Application: If we want to live happily ever after, fear God and choose to do what pleases Him.

Prayer: God, You created the world and me, and surely know what's best; save me from the folly of thinking I know better than You. Help me choose Your will every day. Amen.

Joshua 9-12 Israel gets deceived because they fail to seek God's counsel, resulting in their enemies ganging up on them. However, God is greater than His people's mistakes, and supernaturally comes to their aid as they seek to obey Him.

Joshua 9 Smart People Seek God's Counsel

9:1 When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it 2 that they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, 4 they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins, old and torn and bound up, 5 and old and patched shoes on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 6 They went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us." 7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "What if you live among us. How could we make a covenant with you?" 8 They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." Joshua said to them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?" 9 They said to him, "Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt, 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites Sihon and Og . 11 Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and tell them, "We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us. 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become mouldy. 13 These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our shoes have become old because of the very long journey." 14 The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from the mouth of Yahweh.

15 Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them. 16 It happened at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they lived among them. 17 The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim. 18 The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes. 19 But all the princes said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them." 21 The princes said to them, "Let them live, so they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them."

22 Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, "Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us? 23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be bondservants, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God." 24 They answered Joshua, and said, "Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 25 Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do." 26 He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them. 27 That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh, to this day, in the place which he should choose.

Observations: 9:1 Those who follow God will experience both obvious and devious attacks by the enemy of their soul.

9:3 The Gibeonites were Hivites, the nearby people whom the Israelites were forbidden to leave alive, much less make a binding covenant with. The Gibeonite motive was to save their lives, not follow Yahweh, and they used Satan's tactic of deception to dupe the Israelites into a covenant that was in disobedience to God. This covenant causes Israel's enemies to gang up on them (next chapter).

9:14 The people failed to seek counsel from God, perhaps a result of their past successes.

9:26 The Israelites keep their word sworn before Yahweh. This demonstrates that they were not blood-thirsty invaders bent on conquest for their own sake.

Application: Because we have an very deceptive enemy, always seek counsel especially in seeking God's will in areas with long-term consequences, like relationships.

Prayer: God keep me from being deceived by my desires or demons, so I don't make stupid long-term mistakes; help me humble myself to seek wise, godly counsel regarding Your will at all times. Amen.

Joshua 10 Score: Israelites Killed 0 – Pagans Living 0

10:1 When Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; 2 that they were very afraid, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. 3 Therefore...king(s) of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, Eglon...4 "Come up to me, and help me, and let us strike Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel." 5 Therefore the five kings gathered...all their armies, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it. 6 The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, "Don’t abandon your servants! Come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country have gathered together against us."

7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour. 8 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don’t fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you." 9 Joshua therefore came on them suddenly. He went up from Gilgal all night. 10 Yahweh confused them before Israel, and he killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon...11 As they fled from before Israel...Yahweh cast down great stones from the sky on them, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than who the children of Israel killed with the sword. 
12 Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh in the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still on Gibeon! You, moon, stop in the valley of Aijalon!" 13 The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn’t this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of the sky, and didn’t hurry to go down about a whole day. 14 There was no day like that before it or after it, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel.

15 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal. 16 These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 18 Joshua said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them; 19 but don’t stay. Pursue your enemies...Don’t allow them to enter into their cities; for Yahweh your God has delivered them into your hand." 21 All the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. None moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. 22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out of the cave to me." 23 They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: 24 When they brought those kings out to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came near, and put their feet on their necks. 25 Joshua said to them, "Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous, for Yahweh will do this to all your enemies against whom you fight." 26 Afterward Joshua struck them, put them to death, and hanged them on five trees. They were hanging on the trees until the evening. 27 It happened at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave in which they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.

28 Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king. He utterly destroyed them and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining. He did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29 Ditto Libnah 32 Lachish 33 Gezer 34 Eglon 36 Hebron 38 Debir 40 So Joshua struck all the land, the hill country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, commanded. 41 Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea even to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon. 42 Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because Yahweh, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. 43 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal.

Observations: 10:1-6 As a consequence for not seeking counsel, Israel faces a foe five times larger. Israel had the covenantal responsibility to come to Gibeon's aid (greater powers needed to protect the lesser powers who had pledged allegiance and subservience to them).

10:7-14 God supernaturally aided Israel. Although He could have just wiped them out Himself, He uses Israel, the folks to whom He gave His revelation, so others could see His might and have a point of contact with the true God (one could argue that the Gibeonites were like Rahab in this respect). The Canaanites worshiped the Sun as well as the Moon (Jericho), so God shows Himself to be the One who controls them. See Digging Deeper for Joshua's Longest Day.

10:15 There is no record of Israelite casualties in the entire chapter.

10:21-27 In killing the kings, who were “sons of the gods”, Joshua demonstrates the supreme rule of Yahweh over the pagan gods. In the rest of the chapter all the pagans are wiped out according to Yahweh's explicit instructions, with the kings explicitly mentioned.:

Application: God fights our battles when we obey Him; don't stop obeying until you've finished fulfilling His commands.

Prayer: God of the sun, moon, stars, hail, and my life, help me be completely loyal to You, and obey right away, all the way. Amen.

Joshua 11 Promises Fulfilled

11:1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings who were on the north, in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west, 3 to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4 They went out, they and all their armies with them, many people, even as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots. 5 All these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel. 6 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don’t be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time, I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire." 7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell on them. 8 Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them, and chased them...until they left them none remaining. 9 Joshua did to them as Yahweh told him. He hamstrung their horses and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword: for Hazor used to be the head of all those kingdoms. 11 They struck all the souls who were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them. There was no one left who breathed. He burnt Hazor with fire. 12 Joshua captured all the cities of those kings, with their kings, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded. 13 But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only. Joshua burned that. 14 The children of Israel took all the spoil of these cities, with the livestock, as spoils for themselves; but every man they struck with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They didn’t leave any who breathed.

15 As Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua. Joshua did so. He left nothing undone of all that Yahweh commanded Moses. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took all in battle. 20 For it was of Yahweh to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as Yahweh commanded Moses. 21 Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 There were none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Yahweh spoke to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. The land had rest from war.

Observations: 11:6,9 Horses and chariots were the advance war machines. Israel didn't need them because God was their mighty Warrior.

11:10,13 Hazor, the capital was the only hilltop city destroyed, both for political and religious reasons (center of pagan/demonic worship).

11:15 Joshua did what God said, and got blessed. Good Joshua!

11:20 God hardened the Canaanites in their initial inclination to oppose Him and Israel, just like He did Pharaoh, so that He might destroy them for their idolatry, (as planned in Genesis 15) and protect Israel from their influence.

11:21 Anakim were the giants that first terrified the Israelites in Numbers 13.

Application: Regardless of the size of our problems, God will take care of them if we do as He instructs, totally.

Prayer: God, You are the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, who protects and prospers His obedient people; may I never lose sight of that truth. Amen.

Joshua 12 Score: Kings Killed – 31; Kingdoms Inherited - All

12:1 Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Israel struck, and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon...6 Moses the servant of Yahweh and the children of Israel struck them. Moses the servant of Yahweh gave it for a possession to the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel struck beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon even to Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir. Joshua gave it to the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions...2...all the kings thirty-one.

Observation: The people obeyed, and the King of Kings fulfilled His promises through His servants.

Digging Deeper:

Joshua's Longest Day

The miracle of the Sun and Moon standing raises scientific eyebrows like no other act of God. For if the earth stopped rotating, everything on it would spin off it due to Newton's (and God's) Laws of Motion. The tidal disturbances would also be catastrophic. If the earth kept rotating and the sun and moon stopped, we would still have the tidal effects, and the consequences in the cosmos of the sun rotating around the earth are difficult to grasp. For those who believe in the God of creation, for whom nothing is too difficult, managing the effects of such an event are all in a day's work (even while beaning Canaanites with hailstones). For the more skeptically inclined, there are alternative considerations:

1) The account is an interpolation from a fictional work, the Book of Jasper.

a) The problem with this is that there doesn't seem to be a textual tradition that leaves out the account, and the Book of Jasper is referred to as historical in 2Samuel 1:18.

b) Josephus also mentions that the day was lengthened.

2) God could have tilted the earth's axis to keep things in motion and give extra hours of daylight like at the poles. This would have given the effect of the sun remaining overhead, without doing too much violence to the laws of physics or the text.

This is the second best choice, and if you're short on time, it should allow you to sleep tonight knowing that the Scriptures are still reliable. But this misses the theological point under 3b, and the historical evidence under 3c, below. I'm not sure how the waters of the earth would slosh about with a tilt, but proponents would say God could manage that.

3) The account could be translated to imply that the light was prolonged in such a way that it appeared the sun stood still. God could have localized His presence/glory (as before He created the sun, or as He will do in the Kingdom as recorded in Revelation 21:23 and 22:5). Or He could have turned up the sun and caused the moon to reflect the light so that it appeared as day.

The problems with this view are:

a) the text would have to be twisted, tortured, and lose a few words to warrant it.

b) besides violating the plain meaning and elaboration of the text, this view misses an important theological point. What might appear as an act of hubris on Joshua's part is a polemic against the sun and moon gods of the Canaanites, just like the plagues were designed to strike against the Egyptian gods. God is showing that He is greater than the gods the pagans worshiped.

c) there are historical records from Egypt, China, the Incas in Peru and the Aztecs in Mexico indicating a long day, in the references below.

The alleged NASA accounts and official denials are great fodder for conspiracy theory types. The Scriptures don't tell us how God did it, but do indicate what was perceived, and that God has the power to do anything.

God in a nutshell: God can do anything and does what suits His purposes. Nothing that we can conceive of is beyond the ability of the God who spoke the universe into existence. He fulfills His promises, using His people to do so. He requires exact obedience, that magnifies Him as the priority of our lives. He is ruthless in judging sin, and rich in blessing His people. 

Us in a nutshell: We will always be tempted by unsanctified desires, which will kill us if we don't kill them. We will be deceived if we don't seek God's perspective and input on all our decisions. Failure to remove sin from our lives is failure. When God energizes the sword, we're invincible. Our job is to do what God has ordered, regardless of our preferences or sensibilities.  When we have done the will of God, we receive what He's promised.

Joshua 9

9:1 It happened, when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it 2 that they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, 4 they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins, old and torn and bound up, 5 and old and patched shoes on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 6 They went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us." 7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "What if you live among us. How could we make a covenant with you?" 8 They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." Joshua said to them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?" 9 They said to him, "Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt, 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. 11 Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and tell them, "We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us. 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become mouldy. 13 These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our shoes have become old because of the very long journey." 14 The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from the mouth of Yahweh.

15 Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them. 16 It happened at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they lived among them. 17 The children of Israel travelled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim. 18 The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes. 19 But all the princes said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. 20 This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them." 21 The princes said to them, "Let them live, so they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them."

22 Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, "Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you live among us? 23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be bondservants, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God." 24 They answered Joshua, and said, "Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 25 Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do." 26 He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them. 27 That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of Yahweh, to this day, in the place which he should choose.

Joshua 10

10:1 Now it happened when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; 2 that they were very afraid, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. 3 Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 "Come up to me, and help me, and let us strike Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel." 5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it. 6 The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, "Don’t abandon your servants! Come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country have gathered together against us."

7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour. 8 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don’t fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you." 9 Joshua therefore came on them suddenly. He went up from Gilgal all night. 10 Yahweh confused them before Israel, and he killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth Horon, and struck them to Azekah and to Makkedah. 11 It happened, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth Horon, that Yahweh cast down great stones from the sky on them to Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than who the children of Israel killed with the sword. 12 Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh in the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still on Gibeon! You, moon, stop in the valley of Aijalon!" 13 The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn’t this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of the sky, and didn’t hurry to go down about a whole day. 14 There was no day like that before it or after it, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel.

15 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal. 16 These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 17 Joshua was told, saying, "The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah." 18 Joshua said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them; 19 but don’t stay. Pursue your enemies, and them from the rear. Don’t allow them to enter into their cities; for Yahweh your God has delivered them into your hand." 20 It happened, when Joshua and the children of Israel had finished killing them with a very great slaughter until they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 21 that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace. None moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. 22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out of the cave to me." 23 They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 It happened, when they brought those kings out to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came near, and put their feet on their necks. 25 Joshua said to them, "Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous, for Yahweh will do this to all your enemies against whom you fight." 26 Afterward Joshua struck them, put them to death, and hanged them on five trees. They were hanging on the trees until the evening. 27 It happened at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave in which they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.

28 Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king. He utterly destroyed them and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining. He did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29 Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah. 30 Yahweh delivered it also, with its king, into the hand of Israel. He struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were in it. He left none remaining in it. He did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. 31 Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it. 32 Yahweh delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel. Joshua 11

11:1 It happened, when Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings who were on the north, in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west, 3 to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4 They went out, they and all their armies with them, many people, even as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots. 5 All these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel. 6 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don’t be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time, I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire." 7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell on them. 8 Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them, and chased them to great Sidon, and to Misrephoth Maim, and to the valley of Mizpeh eastward. They struck them until they left them none remaining. 9 Joshua did to them as Yahweh told him. He hamstrung their horses and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword: for Hazor used to be the head of all those kingdoms. 11 They struck all the souls who were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them. There was no one left who breathed. He burnt Hazor with fire. 12 Joshua captured all the cities of those kings, with their kings, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded. 13 But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only. Joshua burned that. 14 The children of Israel took all the spoil of these cities, with the livestock, as spoils for themselves; but every man they struck with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They didn’t leave any who breathed.

15 As Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua. Joshua did so. He left nothing undone of all that Yahweh commanded Moses. 16 So Joshua captured all that land, the hill country, all the South, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, the hill country of Israel, and the lowland of the same; 17 from Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir, even to Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon under Mount Hermon. He took all their kings, struck them, and put them to death. 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took all in battle. 20 For it was of Yahweh to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as Yahweh commanded Moses. 21 Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 There were none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Yahweh spoke to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. The land had rest from war.

12:1 Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Israel struck, and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah eastward: 2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the middle of the valley, and half Gilead, even to the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon; 3 and the Arabah to the sea of Chinneroth, eastward, and to the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, eastward, the way to Beth Jeshimoth; and on the south, under the slopes of Pisgah: 4 and the border of Og king of Bashan, of the remnant of the Rephaim, who lived at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, 5 and ruled in Mount Hermon, and in Salecah, and in all Bashan, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. 6 Moses the servant of Yahweh and the children of Israel struck them. Moses the servant of Yahweh gave it for a possession to the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel struck beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon even to Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir.
