2 Timothy 3-4 Keeping the Faith

2 Timothy 3-4 Keeping the Faith

Bill Blurb: If you've been finding DailyTruthbase helpful, follow 2 Timothy 2:2 and pass it on to others (make it a monthly goal to get another person reading the Scriptures daily). Have them start in Genesis 1:1 and ask them what they're reading weekly.

Note on the text in DTB. In the OT, I edited out the text people tend to get bogged down in, and included it at the end of the post. In the NT all the text is included, but edited to reflect the meaning where the translators missed the context or argument. I underline the words in the text to teach folks how to read and note what is important and emphasized. A basic Bible Study skill is to read in multiple versions to highlight differences, which will underscore difficulties in interpretation. So do read the text carefully, since I sometimes clarify concepts and structure in it which I don't mention in the observations.

Don't just keep the faith, pass it on.

TMS Hebrews 2:18 Help Is Only A Prayer Away
Heb 2:18 “17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted,
He is able to aid those who are tempted.”

Observations: 2:18 The author of Hebrews demonstrates the superiority of what believers have in Christ, compared to what they had in Judaism. Jesus, as our faithful High Priest, knows what we go though, because He was tempted in all the ways we are: power (security/significance), pleasure, possessions, etc., yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Therefore He is able to help us if we seek Him and His grace to live victoriously.

Application: We can always ask Jesus for help to overcome temptation, and if we fail to do that, we can ask him for forgiveness, but He'd rather give the help.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thanks for dying for me, and for Your desire and offer to empower me to live victoriously; may I seek Your help in my every need. Amen.

2 Timothy 3-4 In the end of the last chapter Paul warned Timothy against those in the church who would oppose him (being taken captive by Satan to do his will). In these chapters he warns Timothy against those who would ignore him (and God's word) foolishly following Satan's decoys rather than finding delight in God. Paul encourages Timothy to endure the opposition and do the job for which God put him on earth and commissioned him: to proclaim the inspired word to those believers who didn't want to hear it, and were thus disqualified from their reward. Paul looked forward to his reward in the future kingdom, as should all mature, God-serving believers.

2 Timothy 3 Iniquity and Inspiration
3:1 But know this, that in the last days, grievous times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, truce breakers, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; 5 holding a form of godliness, but denying its power. Turn away from these, also.
6 For some of these are people who creep into houses, and take captive gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Even as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so do these also oppose the truth; men corrupted in mind, who concerning the faith, are rejected. 9 But they will proceed no further. For their folly will be evident to all men, as theirs also came to be.
10 But you did follow my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, steadfastness, 11 persecutions, and sufferings: those things that happened to me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I endured those persecutions. Out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you remain/abide in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.
15 From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Observations: 3:1-9 Paul tells Timothy to expect that the world won't get better and better, but in reality will get worse. People will be:
  • self-centered rather than other centered,
  • materialistic rather than spiritual,
  • boastful rather than humble,
  • arrogant rather than serving,
  • abusive revilers rather than edifying speakers,
  • disobedient to parents rather than honoring them,
  • ungrateful complainers rather than thankful praisers,
  • unholy rather than sanctified and godly,
  • friendless rather than enjoying healthy relationships,
  • covenant breakers rather than keepers of their word,
  • bitter and vengeful rather than forgiving,
  • slanderers rather than truth speakers,
  • lacking self-control rather than disciplined,
  • fierce/savage rather than civilized/kind,
  • despisers rather than lovers of what is good,
  • traitors rather than loyal,
  • headstrong rather than prudent,
  • blinded by pride rather than wise,
  • lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.
And these folks are in the church, “serving” on staff, on boards, in the choir, teaching, etc., having an outward form of ritual godliness, but inwardly denying/disregarding the power of God to transform their lives. From such Timothy is to turn away. They are false teachers and leaders, gaining influence over unsanctified people who lack discernment, particularly silly women, who are among those always learning yet never able to arrive at experiential knowledge of the truth (godliness). Their head knowledge never quite made it into their heart and the rest of their lives. This is an equal indictment of both men and women. According to rabbinic tradition, Jan and Jam are the names of Pharaoh's magicians who drew on the dark arts of the devil to oppose Moses. Similarly the folks described above also oppose the truth, since they are corrupted in their thinking/minds, because they have embraced false teaching/theology of men/Satan, rather than the truth reveled by the Holy Spirit. As a result of their opposition to truth, they are not approved (rejected) concerning the faith (the belief in the promises of God which result in reward). This applies to believers, for they are in the church, influencing others, and in opposition to Timothy (Paul wouldn't have to warn him to withdraw from pagans who were teaching in the church). The word for “rejected/not approved” (Strong's #96) is always used of forgiven believers, who don't qualify for glory (see contexts of: Romans 1:28; 2 Corinthians 13:5, 7; Titus 1:16; Hebrews 6:8). Paul even considered the fate of being rejected from reward could apply to himself if he didn't exercise constant vigilance and self-control (1 Corinthians 9:27; Corinthians 13:6 - "reprobate" in KJV). The noun without the negating prefix (approved - Strong's #1384) is used of those who have endured purifying trails and are on target to be rewarded (Romans 14:18; 16:10; 1 Corinthians 11:19; 2 Corinthians 10:18; 13:7; 2 Timothy 2:15)
James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love Him.”
Those who insist on thinking otherwise, contrary to the facts, might want to reconsider why they think as they do, and correct their thinking back in line with the Scriptures before it's too late. Paul says that the folly of the false teachers would be exposed and evident to all just like that of Jan and Jam was (Exodus 7:12; 8:18; 9:11). This could happen in the present or at the return of Christ (1 Timothy 5:24). The Exodus context would argue for the present age, but the future judgment is more in line with the context of 2 Timothy (4:1) and usages of the contexts of “approved” or “disapproved.”
3:10-14 In contrast to those above, who had been corrupted from the truth by the deceiving lies of Satan (3:13), Timothy should embrace the truth he learned from Paul. Timothy fully understands (present tense of a verb that means to follow alongside as a disciple and thus have full knowledge) Paul's teaching, lifestyle, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance in the midst of persecutions and afflictions. Paul, who had been beaten, and stoned, says that the Lord delivered him out of them all (cf Psalms 22:21). Apparently the bruises didn't bother him that much, because they go with the territory. All who will/desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution (cross-stitch that promise on a pillow). If you're swimming upstream, you're bound to encounter some flotsam drifting downstream with the flow. Evil men/women and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving others and being deceived by Satan. They will be the source of most opposition and persecution.
If we endure, God will deliver.
Paul charges Timothy to abide in what he has learned from Paul and been persuaded of because he knows the character of Paul, and the consequences of his teaching in his life.
3:15-17 Paul reminds Timothy that from his youth he has known the (OT) Scriptures, which have power to make him wise with respect to the salvation which is in Christ Jesus. Don't miss the applicability of the OT Scriptures to our walk with Christ. The aspect of salvation in view is that of glorification (approved/disapproved). The OT repeatedly teaches redeemed believers to be careful to do what is right in God's sight (righteousness) so they can be blessed (protected and prospered). Paul then tells him that all Scripture is God-breathed (inspired) and thus profitable (both temporally -how to live this life, and eternally -how to get rewarded in the next life - 4:1-8). The four spheres where the Scriptures are temporally profitable are:
  • teaching/doctrine – marking out the path God wants us to take;
  • reproof – showing us where we're off the path;
  • correction – how to get back on the path;
  • training in righteousness – how to stay on the path when you're tempted to wander or quit.
This is a great pattern for a quiet time, observing God's word for these four things, and then responding in obedience and prayer (response to revelation = worship). This is one of the 7 Passages in the sidebar, that you need to own, so you can pass it on to others. There are lots more observations and applications in the study in the sidebar. Learn it, live it, and then love others with it. The purpose of the Scriptures being profitable in the above areas is so that the man of God (OT term for prophet) can have all they need for every good work. The word for perfect or complete is used only here in the NT and comes from a root that means fitted, which Paul elaborates as completely furnished or supplied for every good work (the means of gaining glory - Ephesians 2:10 the first of the 7 Passages). The specific good works Timothy needs to do are delineated in the next chapter.

Application: God's word equips us with all we need to resist evil and do good, therefore we need to be guided by it every day on our path to glory.

Prayer: God, I praise You for breathing life into me and Your words; may I incorporate their power and wisdom into my life as I do the good works for which You created me. Thanks. Amen.

2 Timothy 4 Teaching and Triumph
4:1 "I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His Kingdom: 2 preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts; 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables.
5 But you be sober/sound-minded in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry. 6 For I am ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. 8 From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved His appearing.
9 Be diligent to come to me soon, 10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you, for he is profitable to me for ministry. 12 But I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 Bring the cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus when you come, and the books, especially the parchments. 14 Alexander, the coppersmith, did much evil to me. The Lord will repay him according to his works, 15 of whom you also must beware; for He greatly opposed our words.
16 At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will save/preserve me for His heavenly Kingdom; to Whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the house of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but I left Trophimus at Miletus sick. 21 Be diligent to come before winter. Eubulus salutes you, as do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers. 22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen."

Observations: 4:1 In light of the Scriptures being God's words (breath), profitable, and all one needs to do His will, Paul charges Timothy to use them to do His work. The charge is made in light of the judgment of the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, who will appear and set up His Kingdom (still future).
4:2-4 The task for which Timothy needs such a solemn charge is to tell evil and potentially verbally violent church people (those described ) what they don't want to hear. Paul commands Timothy to preach the word (of God), regardless of whether people are receptive (in season) or rejective (out of season). He is to use the word to highlight (reprove = bring to light) sin or lack of conformity to God's will; to rebuke (spell out the consequences to sinning believers), and exhort/encourage (call them to do the right thing which he models). The reason this will require lots of patience (long suffering) and instruction is because the time will come (and is already here) when people won't bear with nor listen to sound/healthy teaching/doctrine but will gather heaps of teachers who will tickle their ears, and tell them what they want to hear, keeping them comfortable in the sin and lack of victory (worms vs. butterflies - see comments on Romans 12:1-2, another of the 7 Passages). The people will turn away their ears from the truth and want to hear fables and stories that don't expose their evil ambitions, lusts, and behaviors. Believers who fail to pursue God's truth will delude themselves, (and be deceived by Satan) into thinking they are doing or can't do God's will, and that such rebellion is fine. When Christ returns, they will receive a rude awakening unless they respond to the wake-up call of truth (Ephesians 5:14).
4:5-8 So Paul reminds Timothy to be sound-minded in all things (life governed by objectives rather than emotions/passions), to suffer hardship/endure afflictions, and do his job of proclaiming the good news of the Messiah: He's coming back to judge and reward His faithful servants and discipline those who aren't. The reminder to fulfill the ministry Timothy received from the Lord via the hands of Paul is all the more poignant in light of Paul impending martyrdom. In facing his departure from earth he can say:
  • he has fought the good fight (also used of competing in athletic games);
  • he has finished the course; (perfect tense, of fulfilling a commission);
  • he has kept the faith (he has observed or attended to carefully the promises of God);
  • he will be rewarded.
He knows that the the Lord, being a righteous judge will give him, on Judgment Day, the reward he has laid up in heaven by his actions on earth (cf 1 Peter 1). The reward is described a crown or rulership in the Kingdom, which comes from his righteousness on earth (being careful to do what is right in God's sight). The Lord will not only give Paul his due, but will reward all those who have loved (sacrificed themselves for continually - perfect tense), the prospect of His appearing in glory to rule over the Millennial Kingdom (cf 4:1). Some of the judgments of Christ will have their consequences for a thousand years in the Messiah's Kingdom.
4:9-15 Paul is anxious for the companionship of Timothy during his last days on earth, because everyone has left him, but Luke. Demas forsook him for the deceiving delights of this temporal world, a really bad trade. He gave up the incorruptible delights of eternity for the passing pleasures of sin which are subject to the laws of diminishing returns, and decay. He should have given up that which he couldn't keep, for that which he couldn't lose. On a brighter note, Paul recognized the benefit of Mark for ministry (probably the John-Mark over whose faithfulness Paul and Barnabas split in Acts 15:39). He asks for the cloak and books, especially the parchments. These can't be identified with precision. He warns Timothy against Alexander who greatly opposed the truth and did much evil. He reminds Timothy not to seek vengeance, because the Lord will repay him.
4:16-22 At his first defense/apologia at his trial, no one stood with him, except the Lord, who strengthened him, so that the message might be fully heard, and the commission of Christ discharged. God is always by our side to strengthen and help us as we do His will. People are fallible, and will frequently fail us, so while it is nice to have fellow-laborers and companions, our hope and help must ultimately be in Christ alone. As a result of the Lord empowering him, all the Gentiles (in Rome and beyond) heard the good news of Christ. He confidently expected that God would continue to deliver him from every evil attack. Nevertheless, servants of God are not immortal (yet), just impervious to destruction until their job here on earth is done. Paul says that God will save/preserve him for/eis His heavenly Kingdom. He was even delivered from the mouth of a surprised and hungry lion. Roman citizens were not subject to being cat food in the Colosseum, so it is possibly a veiled reference to Nero (who was called a lion by Seneca) or Satan (1 Peter 5:8, in which case “lion” would have the definite article in front of it, and it doesn't). Note that the heavenly Kingdom is still future (cf Luke 17:21). Paul gives greeting to Priscilla and Aquila, and the house of Onesiphorus, honorable saints of the Lord. Note that the miracle working, sick healing and dead resurrecting apostle left Trophimus at Miletus sick. Those who think they must claim physical healing in the atonement might benefit by thinking again. Paul requests that Timothy come before winter (with the cloak). All the brothers salute/greet Timothy, and Paul prays the Lord Jesus would be with Timothy's spirit (cf 1:7) and that the empowerment and covenantal blessing of grace would be his.

Application: Those who love Christ's appearing, and want to look forward to their reward, must learn and faithfully carry out God's will for them.

Prayer: Lord, I praise You for Your word, and the wisdom You give through it; thanks for Your presence and the strength You give; may I draw upon Your grace to do Your will for my life. Amen.

Digging Deeper

God in a nutshell: God breathed His words into the Scripture so we would have truth profitable for our lives and ministry.

Build-a-Jesus: Jesus is the future judge who will appear to reward faithful believers, and disqualify the unfaithful. He strengthens His servants to accomplish His purposes for them, and then takes them home to glory.

Us in a nutshell: All who purpose to live doing what Christ desires will experience persecution from men and praise from God. Many believers on the broad and easy road to destruction will not want to hear truth, but will find teachers who tell them what they want to hear (that they're OK living to please themselves rather than Christ). Justification is given by faith; Glorification is gotten by faithful works.

Where to Go for More:

2 Thessalonians 1-3 Being Good and Doing Good for Glory

TMS Isaiah 26:3 What Are You Trusting God For?
Isa 26:3 “You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
4 Trust in the LORD forever, For in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength."

Observations: 26:3 What exactly are you trusting God for? What have you placed into His hands for Him to take care of? What would your life be like if God didn't respond to your faith? For some, there would be no difference, since they really aren't trusting God for anything. Those who keep their minds fixed on God's character and promises will have perfect peace regardless of the circumstances. Verse 4 is worth memorizing too, because it gives the action step of trusting God to experience His help and strength.
Application: If we start to experience anxiety, we need to put our eyes off our circumstances and back on the God we trust.
Prayer: God, You are totally trustworthy, my Peace and Strength; thanks that I will always find You true to Your promises. Amen.

2Thessalonians 1-3 In his second letter to the Thessalonians, Paul covers some of the same topics, which implies that although they were lovable, some of them were slow learners. He gives additional instruction about the Rapture, because Satan had deceived some into thinking they missed it. Paul also provides information about the Anti-Christ and insight into avoiding Satan's lies. He gives encouragement to persevere for the glory for which God saved them, and warns of the fate awaiting those who don't follow the truth. People whose Christian experience consists of sitting through countless evangelistic sermons rather then investing countless hours studying the Scriptures will have difficulty rearranging their mental categories to incorporate some of the truths in this book. Truth is that which best explains all the facts.

2 Thessalonians 1 Vengeance and Victory
1:1 "Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 We are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers, even as it is appropriate, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of each and every one of you towards one another abounds; 4 so that we ourselves boast about you in the assemblies of God for your endurance and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you suffer.
5 This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of the Kingdom of God, for which you also suffer. 6 Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 giving vengeance to those who don’t pay attention to/know God, and to those who don’t obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus, 9 who will pay the penalty: destruction of the Age, away from the face of the Lord and from the glory of His might, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints, and to be admired among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed, in that day.
11 To this end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and (NIV) that by His power He may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ."

Observations: 1:1-4 In his greeting, wishing them the covenantal blessings of grace and peace, Paul mentions their growing faith in God's promises (they were already forgiven, justified and born again), and their abounding love for each other. He boasted to other churches about their faith and endurance in the midst of persecutions and afflictions from the local Jews who rejected the message of the Messiah (Acts 17). Note that Paul fails to mention their hope as he did in the opening of his first epistle, although they were enduring suffering in an exemplary manner (which would have to involve being rightly related to God, which is why they were being persecuted, and thus able to draw upon God's grace/power to endure).
1:5-10 The successful endurance of suffering is evidence of God's righteous judgment (same concept in Philippians 1:28). Verse 6 explains the righteous judgment: in order to be righteous, God must pay back evil with evil and good with good. Those who unjustly persecute them will face negative judgment, and those persecuted unjustly will face positive judgment or recompense.
Thus their successful endurance proves they will be worthy of the coming Millennial Kingdom.
“Count worthy” in verse 5 is the same word used of the apostles rejoicing that they were considered worthy to suffer in Acts 5:41. It is an intensive form of the word used in verse 11, a term used to weigh the evidence and consider whether one deserves glory or punishment (Hebrews 3:3; 10:29).
Luke 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy <2661> to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
Luke 21:34 Take heed to yourselves lest...that Day come on you unexpectedly. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always, that you may be accounted worthy <2661> to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
God will give relief/rest to those afflicted because of the gospel when the Lord Jesus is revealed as the future Judge (Matthew 25:30-34). This is not the Rapture, but the Second Coming, when Christ sets up His Kingdom, and rewards the faithful. He will also execute vengeance on the unfaithful, who don't pay attention to God nor obey Him. The issue is not belief or unbelief, but obedience. The word translated “know” God is not the normal word for relationship, but the word for “perceiving/seeing” It was used in 1 Thessalonians 5:12 of “paying attention” to those who were seeking to minister to them. (See Thayer's Lexicon #1492 for the range of meanings.) To equate “see” with being unregenerate is to not perceive accurately. Here, when linked with obedience, and the surrounding context, it refers to the Judaizers whose sins were forgiven/covered by participation in the Day of Atonement, but like those who were disobedient in the OT, didn't pay attention to God's revelation.
“Destruction” is used only four times in the NT, and always of the judgment of believers: of the church discipline of the sinning believer in 1 Corinthians 5:5 “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction <3639> of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” in 1 Thessalonians 5:3 of believers walking in the darkness facing judgment; in 1 Timothy 6:9 of believers who seek wealth rather than God.
Hebrews 10:30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance belongs to Me," says the Lord, "I will repay." Again, "The Lord will judge His people."
The penalty the Judaizers would pay is that of the unprofitable servant (see comments on Mt 25:30); they would be excluded from the presence of God (cf. Ezekiel 44) and the glory of His might (not be tossed into the lake of fire). Their punishment will occur when Christ comes to be glorified among His holy ones/saints, and admired among all those who have believed. The odds are that this is not the interpretation of this passage you've heard in evangelistic sermons, but it is that which best explains all the facts, and is consistent with all the rest of the Scriptures.
1:11-12 In light of the Second Coming of Christ to judge, Paul prays that God would ”count them worthy” (see on verse 5 above) of their calling/invitation to participate in the life and reign of Christ in His Kingdom, and would demonstrate His power in bringing to fruition their every desire for goodness, and good works prompted by their faith. He prays this so that Jesus may be glorified in them, and that they may be glorified (as in receive glory) in Him. The empowering and fruition is a function of God's grace/power. If there is no desire for goodness nor any faith-motivated good works, it's hard for God's grace to empower them, and thus no resultant glory. God responds to our desires and faith with His grace, He doesn't force any of those things upon us. It should be noted that Paul wouldn't be praying for this to happen if it were completely automatic.
Application: Jesus will return to be glorified and give glory to His faithful saints; therefore, prepare yourself, pursing goodness and good works.
Prayer: God, thanks that You are infinitely righteous and just and will set things right when Christ returns; in the meantime, may I draw on Your grace to be and do good. Amen.

2 Thessalonians 2 Antidote to the Anti-Christ

2:1 "Now, brothers, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to Him, we ask you 2 not to be quickly shaken in your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by letter as from us, saying that the day of Christ had come.
3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be, unless the departure/separation comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 he who opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God. 5 Don’t you remember that, when I was still with you, I told you these things? 6 Now you know what is restraining him, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness already works. Only there is one who restrains now, until he is taken out of the way. 8 Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth, and destroy by the manifestation of His coming; 9 even he whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 and with all deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they didn’t receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 Because of this, God sends them a strong delusion, that they should believe a lie; 12 that they all might be judged who didn’t believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
13 But we are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth; 14 to which He called you through our Good News, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, stand firm, and hold the traditions which you were taught by us, whether by word, or by letter.
16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal encouragement and good hope through grace, 17 encourage your hearts and establish you in every good work and word."

Observations: 2:1-12 Paul now turns to the deficiency in their hope. Satan had sown deceiving lies and doubt about the Day of Christ (the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus) and the Rapture (their being gathered together to Him -1 Thessalonians 4:17, two different things), to discourage the saints and diminish their hope (as he still does today). The Day of the Lord was a time of judgment and tribulation, the latter of which they definitely experienced, so it was possible to think they missed the Rapture. “The Day” is not just the twenty-four hour period in which Christ returns to earth, but in both the OT and NT can be referring to the Tribulation, the Second Coming, the Kingdom, and various judgments (the Second Coming, the Millennium, and the great white throne judgment (cf. Psalm 2:9; Isaiah 11:1-12; 13; Joel 2; Amos 5:18; Zephaniah 3:14-20; etc). So Paul reminds them of what he had previously told them (they might not have been the brightest crayons in the box, but they were lovable), that certain things had to occur before the Day of Christ.
  • The first event that needed to happen before Christ returned was the Rapture he had told them about in the previous letter (1 Thessalonians 4:17), not some general apostasy (although the English world is almost a transliteration of the Greek. The word is used in only one other place of the departure from the customs of Moses (Acts 21:21), but the most telling lexical insight is that it is the feminine form of the neuter word for “divorce” or separation. It has the definite article in front of it, indicating a specific departure, which he says he already told them about. The most likely meaning, by a wide margin, is that of the Rapture in the previous letter (bolstered by “the gathering together to Him” in 2:1 above. Any other interpretation is a departure from Paul's meaning.
  • The second event before the Second Coming is the revelation of the man of sin, the son of destruction (Daniel 9:27; 11:36). This is the Anti-Christ, who appears at the end of the age (and therefore can't be any person in history). He will set himself up as God, and oppose God. The sitting in the temple can't refer to the Millennial temple, since Christ will set that up, so it's either a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, or more likely a reference to usurping Christ's headship over the church, the NT temple (which is how Paul always uses the term). He is the one who will make and break the covenant with the regathered nation of Israel (Daniel 9:27).
  • The third event which must occur before the Return of Christ is the removal of the Restrainer, which is preventing this Satanically energized being from taking over. The only thing capable of restraining such a supernatural evil is the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit who currently indwells the Body of believers, the church, is removed from the earth in the Rapture, the path is clear for evil to operate without hindrance. It is thought by some that the restraining force is the Holy Spirit working through the church, which is remotely possible, but judging by the succumbing of the church to Satan's agenda, it's more likely the Holy Spirit Himself.
When the Lord Jesus returns, He will destroy the Anti-Christ with a word. No contest. Many will be deceived by the Anti-Christ who determine truth by experience rather than Revelation (see 7QUESTIONS in the sidebar). Their experience will be that of miracles, signs, and wonders. The ignorant will correctly conclude it is supernatural, but fail to realize that there is a Light and dark side to the supernatural. All the pagan religions had supernatural manifestations. Only that which is in accord with God's revelation is the reality to be believed. See study on Satan on Truthbase.net for more. Satan, working though the miracles of the Anti-Christ will deceive those who are perishing (present tense, middle/passive voice - 2 Corinthians 2:15; 4:3) because (in the Greek “because” has two meanings, requital/in place of) they didn't accept the love of the truth that they might be saved (glorified and delivered from the wrath which comes upon the disobedient). Because of their rejection of the truth, God will send them a delusion (hardening them in their choice), that they will believe a/the lie (claims of the Anti-Christ), and be judged. This is like God hardening Pharaoh in his choices so that He could judge him (see comments on Romans 9). The reason for their lack of love for the truth is revealed to be their love of the pleasures of unrighteousness. Unless we find our pleasure solely in God and His provision, we will be susceptible to the seductions of Satan (a good motivation for sanctification).
2:13-17 In contrast to those who believe lies and are headed to judgment, the Thessalonians, who are believing the truth are headed to glory. Paul thanks God that He chose them (corporately -see comments on Ephesians 1) for salvation/glorification through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit and belief in the truth. He called them to this through the gospel/good news of the Messiah's Kingdom, so they would obtain glory (not forgiveness). The word for “chose” is used only two other times in the NT (Philippians 1:22; Hebrews 11:25), means “to take” and here has the sense of taking to Himself, for His purposes. Note that this is not a reference to justification by faith, but to glorification by sanctification and believing the promises of God in contrast to the lies of Satan. God's purpose in calling the Gentile Thessalonians to Himself was to have them share in the Messianic blessings, and thus fulfill His promise to Abraham that all nations would be blessed through Him. This is not the choice of some individuals to get their sins forgiven and others to go to hell (a concept found nowhere in the Scriptures).
Since God's purpose is for believers to get glory, they should stand firm in the faith, and the things taught by Paul, both in person and via epistle.
Paul ends the chapter with a prayer, asking the God who loved us, and gave us the encouragement of the Messianic Age and hope of reward in it, through His grace, to encourage their hearts and establish (bring to fruition) every good work and word of the Thessalonians.
Application: If we are not set on accepting and loving the truth, we will be deceived and seduced by lying pleasures.
Prayer: God, thanks that You have great plans for Your children and are restraining and will destroy the evil one; may I live in light of the glorious future You have for me, by loving and obeying Your truth. Amen.

2 Thessalonians 3 Waiting and Working
3:1 "Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified, even as also with you; 2 and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and evil men; for not all have faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you, and guard you from the evil one. 4 We have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you both do and will do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the endurance/patient waiting of Christ.
6 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother who walks in rebellion, and not after the tradition which they received from us. 7 For you know how you ought to imitate us. For we didn’t behave ourselves disorderly among you, 8 neither did we eat bread from anyone’s hand without paying for it, but in labor and travail worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you; 9 not because we don’t have the right, but to make ourselves an example to you, that you should imitate us. 10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: "If anyone will not work, neither let him eat." 11 For we hear of some who walk among you in rebellion, who don’t work at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now those who are that way, we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
13 But you, brothers, don’t be weary in doing well. 14 If any man doesn’t obey our word in this letter, note that man, that you have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed. 15 Don’t count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all. 17 The greeting of me, Paul, with my own hand, which is the sign in every letter: this is how I write. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Observations: 3:1-5 Paul asks for prayer that the true word will spread and be glorified/honored (obeyed) by all who hear it, as it was among the Thessalonians. He also asks for deliverance from unreasonable, evil, and faithless men. He expresses confidence that the Lord is faithful and will establish and protect the Thessalonians, and that they will do as he taught and commanded them. He prayed that God would guide their hearts into loyal love towards Him, and that they would have endurance (patient waiting) for Christ.
3:6-12 This chiastic section, centered in verse 8 addresses the behavioral deficiencies noted in 1Thess 4:11-12 of idleness, and 1Thess 5:14 of independence/rebellion. Believers are instructed to withdraw (not hang or fellowship with) believers who aren't walking according to the truth (cf 1Cor 5:11 -not even eat). Apparently some Thessalonians were just hanging around, imposing on the love of others, waiting for Christ to return. Paul reminds them of his example of hard work (chiastic center), so that he was not a burden on anyone, even though he had the right to be supported by those to whom he ministered. A good counter balance to giving alms is the principle that if someone doesn't work, they shouldn't eat. God created us to work (even before the fall), and work gives dignity and honor, as well as being the channel though which God meets our needs. The sluggardly are commanded to work, and pull their own weight.
3:13-15 Paul commands the Body to not be weary in doing well, a temptation when things are difficult (cf 1Cor 15:58). If anyone doesn't obey the written word, the members of the Body should note that badly-behaving believer, and have no association with him. The person is disconnected from the Head of the Body, and therefore that distance is dramatized so the person would realize their fault and repent. The goal is to make the person feel ashamed. Those who don't follow this command out of a unbiblical “love” wind up serving Satan's purposes rather than God's. However, the person is not to be viewed as an enemy, but a sinning brother/sister. The goal is repentance and restoration (see Mt 18; 1Cor 5).
3:16-18 Paul ends with a benediction of peace both in the present, in the midst of tribulation, and in the future in the Kingdom. He wishes the Lord would be intimate with each of them, as would His empowering and glorifying grace.
Application: We need to work at doing the Lord's work, which might mean avoiding those who don't.
Prayer: Lord, thanks that You are faithful to guard and guide Your servants; may I be receptive and faithful to You. Amen.

God in a nutshell: God calls believers to glory, and makes available all they need to experience His plan for them. He restrains the evil one until the time comes for bringing His children home. He sends delusions to those who have pleasure in unrighteousness so they will be hardened for judgment and exclusion from His blessings.

Build-a-Jesus: Jesus will return and set up His kingdom after the Rapture, the revelation of the Anti-Christ, and the removal of the Holy Spirit from dwelling on the earth during the Tribulation.

Us in a nutshell: We will experience suffering and God's grace on our way to glory. We need to be good and do good to share in Christ's reward. Satan will seek to deceive with miracles and lies, but if we are faithful to follow the revealed truth God will preserve and protect us.

Numbers 1-5 Numbing Numberings and Holiness

Psalm 21:1-7 What Is Your Heart's Desire?

21:1 “The king rejoices in Your strength, Yahweh! How greatly he rejoices in Your salvation! 2 You have given him his heart's desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah. 3 For you meet him with the blessings of goodness. You set a crown of fine gold on his head. 4 He asked life of You, You gave it to him, even length of days forever and ever. 5 His glory is great in Your salvation. You lay honor and majesty on him. 6 For You make him most blessed forever. You make him glad with joy in Your presence. 7 For the king trusts in Yahweh. Through the hesed/loyal love of the Most High, he shall not be moved."

Observations: David rejoices in God's deliverance/salvation of him from his enemies (21:8-13 elaborate), and the blessings of God, answering his requests and giving him the desires of his heart.
21:3 God intensively, intentionally and continually (Piel Imperfect verb) responds to His servants with bunches of good blessings.
21:6 The chief blessing, from David's perspective, is joy in the presence of God, which yields peace, security, and stability.

Application: If God gave you all that you ask for, would you be happy and joyful? For how long? Are you asking for the right things?

Prayer: Most High God, I praise you for being my loyal Defender and Blesser; may my highest desire be You. Amen.

Proverbs 6:1-5 It's Never Too Late to Do the Right Thing
6:1 “My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger; 2 You are trapped by the words of your mouth. You are ensnared with the words of your mouth. 3 Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, seeing you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor. 4 Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids. 5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

Observations: We all make mistakes and do things or get ourselves in situations that aren't the wisest. When we become aware of our folly, we should take immediate action to make it right, even if we look silly in extracting ourselves from the situation.

Application: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but if you're in a fix, do whatever it takes to fix it.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me walk in the way of wisdom, and if I mess up, give me grace to make it right. Thanks. Amen.

Numbers 1- Exodus covered about a year; Leviticus a month; Numbers, about 39 years to take what should have been a dozen day journey to the Promised Land. (And it wasn't because Moses was a guy who wouldn't stop and ask for directions.) The wilderness detour was for doubt and disobedience.  Don't do likewise. If you missed the blessing and cursing section of Leviticus 26 (last post) then skip this post to read and absorb that crucial chapter. (Numbers 13-14 is worth the price of this whole book).

Numbers 1 Numbering the Warriors
1:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 "Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, every male, one by one; 3 from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their divisions. 4 With you there shall be a man of every tribe; everyone head of his fathers' house. 5 These are the names of the men who shall stand with you...16 These are those who were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel. 17 Moses and Aaron took these men who are mentioned by name.
20 The children of Reuben, Israel`s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war; 21 Reuben 46,500; Simeon; 59,300; Gad 45,650; Judah 64,600; Issachar 54,400; Zebulun 57,400; Joseph, the children of Ephraim 40,500; Manasseh 32,200; Benjamin 35,400; Dan 62,700; Asher 41,500; Naphtali 53,400; Total 603,550 47 But the Levites were not numbered among them. 48 For Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 49 Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number 50 but appoint the Levites over the tent of the testimony: they shall carry the tent, and all the furniture ...and shall encamp around the tent. 51 the Levites shall take it down; and shall set it up: and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death. 53 But the Levites shall encamp round about the tent of the testimony, that there be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel: 54 the children of Israel did all that Yahweh commanded Moses.

Observations: Now you know why the book is called Numbers. It starts with the numbering of the male Israelites over the age of 19 who would be used by God to punish the idolaters who currently occupied the Promised Land, and thus fulfill the promise made to Abe in Genesis 15.
1:5 God knows who the the leaders are; so did the community.
1:33-35 Ephraim was more populous than big brother Manasseh, in accord with Jacob's blessing (Gen 48:19).
1:47 The Levites weren't numbered to go to war because their job was to take care of and guard the Tabernacle.

Numbers 2 Campsite Setup
2:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2 The children of Israel shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the ensigns of their fathers` houses: over against the tent of meeting shall they encamp round about. 3 Those who encamp on the east side... 34 Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set forward, everyone by their families, according to their fathers` houses.

Observations: A picture is worth 696 words. God grouped the tribes together by kinship (descenders of Leah, Rachel, etc). There is purpose in His instructions that isn't always obvious.

Numbers 3 Levite Family Job Descriptions
3:1 Now this is the history of the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Yahweh spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai. 2 These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest`s office. 4 Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh, when they offered strange fire before Yahweh 6 “Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him. 7 They shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tent.”
11 Yahweh spoke to Moses, 12 I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn 13 for all the firstborn are mine; on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I made holy to me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and animal; mine they shall be: I am Yahweh. 15 “Number the children of Levi by their fathers` houses, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shall you number them." 16 Moses numbered them according to the word of Yahweh, as he was commanded. 17 These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari. 21 Of Gershon 7500 23 The families of the Gershonites shall encamp behind the tent westward. 25 The charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting shall be the tent...27 Of Kohath 8600 keeping the charge of the sanctuary. 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall encamp on the side of the tent southward. 31 Their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the lamp stand, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary...32 Merari...the oversight of those who keep the charge of the sanctuary. 6200...they shall encamp on the side of the tent northward. 36 The appointed charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tent, and the bars of it, and the pillars of it...38 Those who encamp before the tent eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death. 39 All who were numbered of the Levites, were 22,000
40 Yahweh said to Moses, Number all the firstborn males of the children of Israel...43 All the firstborn males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those who were numbered of them, were 22,273. 44 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 45 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am Yahweh. 46 For the redemption of the two hundred seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel, that are over and above [the number of] the Levites, 47 you shall take five shekels apiece 48 and you shall give the money, with which the odd number of them is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons. 49 Moses took the redemption-money from those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites

Observations: 3:4 Just like Jacob's first two son's forfeited their birthright blessings, so Aaron's first two sons, Nadab and Abihu, forfeited the blessing of priesthood, even though they were consecrated priests!
3:11-39 Only the sons of Aaron were priests. The other labor was divided among the tribe of Levi, and camping places are assigned, with the eastward honor going to Moses and Aaron.
3:40-47 The Levites were taken by God instead of the firstborn, which God owned in return for passing over them in the plague. The extra firstborn over the number of Levites were redeemed for cash.

Numbers 4 Packing Instructions
4:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers` houses, 3 from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all who enter on the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. 4 This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting 5 when the camp sets forward, Aaron shall go in, and his sons, and they shall take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it, 6 and shall put a covering of sealskin...15 When Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. 49 According to the commandment of Yahweh they were numbered by Moses, everyone according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

Observations: More numberings. 4:3 The Levites only served from age 30-50. Prime time. (8:24 indicates age 25 as a mustering or apprenticeship).

Numbers 5 Purity Instructions
5:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and everyone who has an issue, and whoever is unclean by the dead: 3 both male and female shall you put out, outside of the camp shall you put them; that they not defile their camp, in the midst whereof I dwell. 4 The children of Israel did so, and put them out outside of the camp; as Yahweh spoke to Moses, so did the children of Israel. 5 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
6 Speak to the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, so as to trespass against Yahweh, and that soul shall be guilty; 7 then he shall confess his sin which he has done: and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add to it the fifth part of it, and give it to him in respect of whom he has been guilty. 8 But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made to Yahweh shall be the priest`s; besides the ram of the atonement, whereby atonement shall be made for him.
12 Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, If any man`s wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, 13 and a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she is defiled, and there be no witness against her, and she isn`t taken in the act; 14 and the spirit of jealousy come on him...15...meal-offering of jealousy...16 The priest shall bring her near, and set her before Yahweh: 17 and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tent the priest shall take, and put it into the water. 18...the water of bitterness that causes the curse. 19 (NIV-31) Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20 But if you have gone astray while married...21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the LORD cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22...Then the woman is to say, “Amen. So be it.” 23 “‘The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24 He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse 27 If she has made herself impure...28 If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children. 30...The priest is to have her stand before the LORD and is to apply this entire law to her. 31 The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.’”(NIV)

Observation: 5:3 Beware of being holier than God. God is concerned about purity and preventing contamination of the group, above the immediate feelings of the individual. He is also concerned about the individual and in Leviticus provided procedures for lepers et. al.
5:6-7 Crime isn't supposed to pay. Restitution, plus 20%, plus the cost of the ram, made it expensive. It is interesting that only two commandments are mentioned, prohibitions against stealing, and adultery. Confession and restitution plus 20% should restore unity In the community. The process in the next verses was designed to restore the relationship where possible.
5:12-31 The information presented makes more sense in the context of a "mysterious" pregnancy, but the text doesn't state that. The death penalty (Lev 20:10) isn't mentioned, possibly due to lack of the guy, and witnesses. The process is designed to heighten the guilt, but the curse comes from God mediated by the actions and written and spoken words of the priest. The trial by ordeal lets God execute judgment.  It looks like the process is unfair to women, but it is a form of protection and proof of innocence for the faithful wife.

Application: Individual and corporate purity and holiness are always required for experiencing the blessings of the presence of God.

Prayer: Holy God, may I never resent Your commands, but embrace them as the means of blessing. Amen.

Numbers 1-5 (complete text)
Numbers 1
1:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, every male, by their polls; 3 from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go forth to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their hosts. 4 With you there shall be a man of every tribe; everyone head of his fathers` house. 5 These are the names of the men who shall stand with you. Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur. 6 Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 7 Of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 8 Of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar. 9 Of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon. 10 Of the children of Joseph: Of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud. they were the heads of the thousands of Israel. 17 Moses and Aaron took these men who are mentioned by name: 18 They assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19 As Yahweh commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20 The children of Reuben, Israel`s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 21 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were fortysix thousand five hundred. 22 Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, those who were numbered of it, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 23 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. 24 Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 25 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty. 26 Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 27 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were sixtyfour thousand six hundred. 28 Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 29 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred. 30 Of the children of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 31 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. 32 Of the children of Joseph, [namely], of the children of Ephraim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 33 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand five hundred. 34 Of the children of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 35 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty-two thousand two hundred. 36 Of the children of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 37 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred. 38 Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 39 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. 40 Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 41 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand five hundred. 42 Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers` houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war; 43 those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand and four hundred. 44 These are those who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers` house. 45 So all those who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers` houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war in Israel; 46 even all those who were numbered were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty. 47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. 48 For Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 49 Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, neither shall you take the sum of them among the children of Israel; 50 but appoint you the Levites over the tent of the testimony, and over all the furniture of it, and over all that belongs to it: they shall bear the tent, and all the furniture of it; and they shall minister to it, and shall encamp round about the tent. 51 When the tent sets forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tent is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death. 52 The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts. 53 But the Levites shall encamp round about the tent of the testimony, that there be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tent of the testimony. 54 Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so did they.

Numbers 3
3:1 Now this is the history of the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Yahweh spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai. 2 These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest`s office. 4 Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh, when they offered strange fire before Yahweh, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest`s office in the presence of Aaron their father. 5 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him. 7 They shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tent. 8 They shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tent. 9 You shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given to him on the behalf of the children of Israel. 10 You shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood: and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death. 11 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 12 I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn who opens the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine: 13 for all the firstborn are mine; on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I made holy to me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and animal; mine they shall be: I am Yahweh. 14 Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15 Number the children of Levi by their fathers` houses, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shall you number them. 16 Moses numbered them according to the word of Yahweh, as he was commanded. 17 These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari. 18 These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. 19 The sons of Kohath by their families: Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 20 The sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers` houses. 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites: these are the families of the Gershonites. 22 Those who were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those who were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred. 23 The families of the Gershonites shall encamp behind the tent westward. 24 The prince of the fathers` house of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael. 25 The charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting shall be the tent, and the Tent, the covering of it, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, 26 and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the tent, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service of it. 27 Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites. 28 According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary. 29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall encamp on the side of the tent southward. 30 The prince of the fathers` house of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. 31 Their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the lamp stand, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service of it. 32 Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, [and have] the oversight of those who keep the charge of the sanctuary. 33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari. 34 Those who were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred. 35 The prince of the fathers` house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: they shall encamp on the side of the tent northward. 36 The appointed charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tent, and the bars of it, and the pillars of it, and the sockets of it, and all the instruments of it, and all the service of it, 37 and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords. 38 Those who encamp before the tent eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death. 39 All who were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of Yahweh, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand. 40 Yahweh said to Moses, Number all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. 41 You shall take the Levites for me (I am Yahweh) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the children of Israel: 42 and Moses numbered, as Yahweh commanded him, all the first- born among the children of Israel. 43 All the firstborn males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those who were numbered of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred seventy-three. 44 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 45 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am Yahweh. 46 For the redemption of the two hundred seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel, that are over and above [the number of] the Levites, 47 you shall take five shekels apiece by the poll; after the shekel of the sanctuary shall you take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs): 48 and you shall give the money, with which the odd number of them is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons. 49 Moses took the redemption-money from those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites; 50 from the firstborn of the children of Israel took he the money, one thousand three hundred sixty-five [shekels], after the shekel of the sanctuary: 51 and Moses gave the redemption-money to Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of Yahweh, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

Numbers 5
5:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and everyone who has an issue, and whoever is unclean by the dead: 3 both male and female shall you put out, outside of the camp shall you put them; that they not defile their camp, in the midst whereof I dwell. 4 The children of Israel did so, and put them out outside of the camp; as Yahweh spoke to Moses, so did the children of Israel. 5 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 6 Speak to the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, so as to trespass against Yahweh, and that soul shall be guilty; 7 then he shall confess his sin which he has done: and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add to it the fifth part of it, and give it to him in respect of whom he has been guilty. 8 But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made to Yahweh shall be the priest`s; besides the ram of the atonement, whereby atonement shall be made for him. 9 Every heave -offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they present to the priest, shall be his. 10 Every man`s holy things shall be his: whatever any man gives the priest, it shall be his. 11 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 12 Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, If any man`s wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, 13 and a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she is defiled, and there be no witness against her, and she isn`t taken in the act; 14 and the spirit of jealousy come on him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy comes on him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she isn`t defiled: 15 then shall the man bring his wife to the priest, and shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil on it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is a meal-offering of jealousy, a mealoffering of memorial, bringing iniquity to memory. 16 The priest shall bring her near, and set her before Yahweh: 17 and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tent the priest shall take, and put it into the water. 18 The priest shall set the woman before Yahweh, and let the hair of the woman`s head go loose, and put the meal-offering of memorial in her hands, which is the mealoffering of jealousy: and the priest shall have in his hand the water of bitterness that causes the curse. 19 The priest shall cause her to swear, and shall tell the woman, If no man has lain with you, and if you haven`t gone aside to uncleanness, being under your husband, be you free from this water of bitterness that causes the curse. 20 But if you have gone aside, being under your husband, and if you be defiled, and some man have lain with you besides your husband: 21 then the priest shall cause the woman to swear with the oath of cursing, and the priest shall tell the woman, Yahweh make you a curse and an oath among your people, when Yahweh does make your thigh to fall away, and your body to swell; 22 and this water that causes the curse shall go into your bowels, and make your body to swell, and your thigh to fall away. The woman shall say, Amen, Amen. 23 The priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out into the water of bitterness: 24 and he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that causes the curse; and the water that causes the curse shall enter into her [and become] bitter. 25 The priest shall take the meal-offering of jealousy out of the woman`s hand, and shall wave the meal-offering before Yahweh, and bring it to the altar: 26 and the priest shall take a handful of the meal-offering, as the memorial of it, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall make the the woman drink the water. 27 When he has made her drink the water, then it shall happen, if she is defiled, and has committed a trespass against her husband, that the water that causes the curse will enter into her and become bitter, and her body will swell, and her thigh will fall away: and the woman will be a curse among her people. 28 If the woman isn't defiled, but is clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed. 29 "'This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, being under her husband, goes astray, and is defiled; 30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes on a man, and he is jealous of his wife; then he shall set the woman before YAHWEH, and the priest shall execute on her all this law. 31 The man shall be free from iniquity, and that woman shall bear her iniquity.'"
