Summer Special TMS John 5:24 and Romans 8b

TMS John 5:24 Hear and Believe
John 5: 24 "Most assuredly, I say to you,
he who hears My word
and believes in Him who sent Me
has everlasting life,
and shall not come into judgment,
but has passed from death into life.

Observations: 5:24 This is a great verse to memorize for drawing out the bridge illustration. With man on one side, and God on the other, the gap is bridged by the cross. After drawing out the illustration, write “hear” from where “man” is on the top of the cross, and “believe” from the top of the cross to where God is. Then ask where a person is on the diagram. Those who are really convicted of their sin, but don't understand salvation, put themselves on the far left away from God; those who are a little more moral put themselves at the left edge of the Cross. But in fact, they are standing at the top of the cross, since they've already heard. All that remains is to believe, and then the fun with God starts. Then I usually flip to John 1:12 to explain the ABC's of accepting Christ.
  • Confess or agree that you're a sinner separated from God and in need of salvation.
  • Believe that the Father accepts Christ's death as payment for your sin..
  • Accept the free gift of forgiveness and life that God offers you by His grace.
Sometimes I'll offer a person my pen and ask them to accept it as a gift. He'll confess or agree that I'm offering it to him. He'll believe that I want him to have it. But it isn't his until he accepts/takes it.
When people believe, they get the benefits of eternal life (see last post and the comments on John 5 in the blog); they won't come into condemnation for their sin in the lake of fire; and they have passed from the realm of death into the realm of life (born again -John 3:16).
See “How to Get to Heaven in 10 Minutes or Less” in the Sidebar, or this Fall on YouTube 10minuteBible.com.

Application: Hear and believe and get blessed. It starts the Christian life and should be the paradigm for all our days.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thanks for forgiving me on the basis of Christ's death and giving me a new life with You; may I live it to the fullest. Amen.

Romans 8:12-25 Outline (first draft) © 2008 WF Cobb Truthbase.net

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors——not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
13a For if you live according to the flesh
13b you will die;
13c but if by the Spirit
13d you put to death the deeds of the body, {=living according to the Spirit….=led by the Spirit}
13e you will live

14a For as many as are led by the Spirit of God,
14b these are sons of God.

15a For you did not receive the spirit of bondage
15b again to fear,
15c but you received the Spirit of adoption
15d-f by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

16a The Spirit Himself bears witness
16b with our spirit
16c that we are children of God,

17a but/and/now (de) if children, then heirs——
17b-c heirs of God
17d but/and(de) joint heirs with Christ,
17e if indeed we co-suffer with Him,
17f that we may also be co-glorified together.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
20a For the creation was subjected to futility/vanity,
20b not willingly,
20c but (ellipsis)
20d because of Him who subjected it
20e on the basis of hope;
21 ‘oti the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.

23a Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
23b even we ourselves groan within ourselves,
23c eagerly waiting for the adoption,
23d the redemption of our body.

24a For we were saved in this hope,
24b but hope that is seen is not hope;
24c for why does one still hope for what he sees?
25a But if we hope for what we do not see,
25b we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

H. 12-13 The Result of God giving life to Victorious Believers is that we are indebted to follow the Spirit (vs flesh) in sanctification and glorification.
H1. 12a Brethren are debtors =vp (The Manner in which believers are debtors is to the Spirit rather than the flesh)

H2. 12b-13b The Reason Believers are not debtors to the flesh is because those who live according to the flesh die
H2a. 12b-c The Manner in which Believers are not debtors is to live according to the flesh.
H2a-1. 12b The One to whom believers are debtors is not to the flesh
H2a-2. 12c The Manner in which they are not debtors is to live according to the flesh.
H2b. 13a-b The Reason Believers are not debtors to the flesh is because those who live according to the flesh die
H2b-1. 13a The Ones who will die are those who follow their desires for the temporal (flesh)
H2b-2. 13b Believers will die (lack of dominion) =svp

H3. 13c-e The Reason Believers are debtors to the Spirit is because those who put do death the deeds of the flesh will live.
H3a. 13c-d The Ones who will live (exercise dominion) are those who sanctify themselves by submitting to the Spirit
H3a-1 13c The Means by which Believers sanctify themselves is by submitting to the Spirit
H3a-2. 13d Believers are to put to death the deeds of the body=svp
H3b. 13e Victorious Believers will live (exercise dominion) =vp

I. 14 The Reason believers should follow the Spirit in sanctification and glorification is because those led by the Spirit become sons (heirs) of God
IA. 14a The Ones who are the sons of God are those led by the Spirit of God (who by the HS put to death the deeds of the flesh)
IB.14b These are sons of God = vp (child until recognized as heir in “adoption” then a son (cf Julius Caesar and Octavian)

J. 15 The Reason those led by the HS are the sons of God is because we received the HS who adopts and bears witness to that adoption

J1. 15a-b The Result of not receiving the spirit of bondage is that believers do not fear (as a slave)
J1a. 15a Believers did not receive the spirit of bondage = vp#1
J1b. 15b The Result of not receiving the spirit of bondage is that believers do not fear (as a slave)

J2. 15c-f The Result of receiving the Spirit of adoption is that energized by the HS believers cry out Abba (have an intimate Father/son rlshp)
15c Believers have received the Spirit of adoption =vp#2
15d-f The Result of receiving the Spirit of adoption is that energized by the HS believers cry out Abba
15d The Means by which believers cry out is the HS
15e-f The Content of what believers cry out is "Abba, Father."
15e Believers cry out = svp
15f The Content of what believers cry out is "Abba, Father."

K. 16 The Reason the HS enables believers to have a Father/Son relationship with God is that the HS bears witness that we are not only God’s children but are also co-glorified co-heirs of Christ if we co-suffer with Him (in living for the future rather than the temporal)

K1. The Content of the HS witness is that we are children of God
16a The Spirit Himself bears witness =vp
16b The Sphere in which/One to whom the HS bears witness is with our spirit
16c The Content of the HS witness is that we are children of God

K2. The Result of being children of God is that we are heirs of God
17a The Ones who are heirs are children (those born of God)
17b Believers are heirs =vp
17c The Manner in which believers are heirs is that they are heirs of God

K3. 17d-f The Result of being a co-suffering co-heir of Christ is that believers are co-glorified with Him
17d Believers are co-heirs with Christ=vp
17e-f The Ones who (Reason/Means) are co-heirs of Christ is are those co-suffer with Christ for the purpose of sharing His glory
17e Someone co-suffers with Christ =svp
17f The Purpose of co-suffering with Christ is that they may also be co-glorified with Him (share in His glory)

L. 18-25 The Reason believers should suffer for the sake of sharing Christ’s glory is because Paul reasons that eternal gain outweighs temporal pain

L1. 18 Paul determines that temporal sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

L2.19-21 The 1st Reason eternal gain outweighs temporal pain is because creation waits in pain for the “blessed” revealing of the sons of God, at which time it will experience its hope of freedom. (Temporal pain resulting in eternal gain is the creation plan.)

L2a. 19 The earnest expectation of creation is the revealing of the sons of God.

L2b. 20 The Reason creation waits in hope for the revealing of the sons of God is because it is God’s plan for its “redemption”
L2b-1. 20a-bThe Manner in which creation was not subjected to futility was by its choice
L2b-1a. 20a Creation was not subjected to futility=vp#1
L2b-1b. 20b The Manner in which creation was not subjected to futility was by its choice

L2b-2. 20c-21 The Manner in which God subjected creation to His plan was with the hope that it would be “redeemed”
L2b-2a. 20c Creation was subjected = vp#2 elllipsis
L2b-2b. 20d The Manner in which creation was subjected to futility was due to God’s plan with hope.
L2b-2c. 21 The Content of the hope is that creation will experience freedom from bondage when God’s children enjoy that
OR L2c. 21 The Reason#2 creation waits for the revealing is because at that time it will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the freedom that the children of God will enjoy.
.

L2c. 22 The Reason Paul can say that creation will be delivered from bondage into liberty is
because the whole creation experiences pain (labor) with the expectation of something better (birth).

L3. 23-25 The 2nd Reason eternal gain outweighs temporal pain is because believers also perseveringly groan (have pain) while eagerly awaiting our (future) adoption/redemption/glorification

L3a. 23a The Ones who groan are those who have the firstfruits (initial installment) of the Spirit (of glory)
L3b. 23b Believers groan within themselves =vp

L3c. 23c-d The Reason we groan is because we eagerly await our (future) adoption/redemption/glorification
23c The Reason/Time when/Manner in which we groan is because/while we eagerly await our (future) adoption
23d The Content of our adoption is the redemption/glorification of our body (2Cor 4-5 glory suit)

L3d. 24-25 The Reason we eagerly & painfully await our future glorification) is because the fulfillment of unseen hope requires perseverance.

L3d-1. 24a Believers we were saved in hope of future glorification =vp#1

L3d-2. 24b Hope that is seen is not hope =vp#2

L3d-3. 24c The Reason hope that is seen is not hope is because one does not hope for he sees

L3d-4. 25 The Result of hoping for what we don’t see is that we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
L3d-4a. 25a The Reason we eagerly wait for the fulfillment of God’s promise is because we hope for what we do not see
L3d-4b. 25b Believers eagerly wait for their hope by means of perseverance =vp
