TMS Revelation 3:20 Open the Door

Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears My voice and opens the door,
I will come in to him and dine with him,
and he with Me.

21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

Observations: 3:20 More people have accepted Christ and become born again on the basis of this verse than any other (with the possible exception of John 3:16). It's the verse at the end of the Four Spiritual Laws, used to bring people to a point of decision. I've seen people ask Christ to be their Savior on the basis of this verse (although John 5:24 in the Bridge is my favorite), but it is not exactly as justification/forgiveness verse, but more of a sanctification for glorification verse. (John 5:24 has some issues too.) However, it does talk about those who don't have a vibrant relationship with Christ responding to His invitation to a relationship. In the original context Christ is rebuking the lukewarm Laodiceans so they won't lose the glory He wants to give them (Rev 3:14-18). If you haven't accepted Christ, check out the post on Romans 3, or “How To Get To Heaven,” in the Sidebar. If you are a born again child of God, deepen your relationship with Him by inviting Him into all your your life. See John 15 on abiding in Him, or find the booklet “My Heart, Christ's Home” on the web.

Application: God wants a relationship with You, but politely knocks at the door of your heart, since He won't violate your will and intrude where He isn't wanted. So invite Him into all your life, even the messy parts; He's going to see them come Judgment Day anyway. If you invite Him in, He'll offer to help clean up.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I never keep you excluded from any area of my life; I invite you to come in and make Yourself at home so I can enjoy rich friendship with You. Thanks for wanting that. Amen.

1a Or do you not know, The Content of what Jewish {law cognizant) Believers should know is that
1b brethren (for I speak to those who know the law),
1c that the law has dominion over a man
1d as long as he lives?
2a For the woman who has a husband
is bound by the law to her husband
as long as he lives.
But if the husband dies,
she is released from the law of her husband.
3 So then if, while her husband lives,
she marries another man,
she will be called an adulteress;
but if her husband dies,
she is free from that law,
so that she is no adulteress,
though she has married another man.
4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead
to the law
through the body of Christ,
that you may be married to another——
to Him who was raised from the dead,
……… that we should bear fruit to God.
5 For when we were in the flesh,
the sinful passions which were aroused
by the law
were at work in our members
to bear fruit to death. (s/b parallel to bear fruit)
6 But now we have been delivered from the law,
having died to what we were held by,
so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! We should not say that the law is sin
On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. (Reason we should not say)
For I would not have known covetousness (Reason Paul can say)
unless the law had said, "You shall not covet."
8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment,
produced in me all manner of evil desire.
For apart from the law sin was dead.
9 I was alive
once
without the law,
but when the commandment came,
sin revived
and I died.
10 And the commandment, which was to bring life,
I found to bring death.
11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment,
deceived me,
and by it
killed me.
12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.
13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! That which is good has not become death to me
But sin, that it might appear sin,
was producing death in me
through what is good,
so that sin through the commandment
might become exceedingly sinful.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Romans 7a Outline First draft © 2006 WF Cobb Truthbase.net

I. 1-6 The Reason believers need to reckon themselves dead to sin and live to Christ by the Spirit in order to bear fruit to God is because while under the law they only bore death fruit (or something like that tying into Ch 6)

D1. 5a-e The Result of sinful passions working in our members was that we bore fruit to death.
5a The Time when sinful passions worked in our members was when we were motivate by the temporal (in the flesh)
5b-d Sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our members

D2a. 6a Believers have been delivered from the law
D2b. 6b The Reason believers have been delivered from the law is because they have died to what held them (temporal desires/flesh)
D2c. 6c The Purpose of believers dying to the temporal is so that they would serve in the newness of the Spirit rather
than in the oldness of the letter.

II. 7-12 The Reason Paul can say we only bore death fruit before we died to the temporal (and the law?) is because the law only produces death as it highlights our faults.
A. 7 The Reason we should not say the law is sin is because we would not have known what sin is except through the law
A1. 7a We should not say that the law is sin
A2. 7b Reason we should not say the law is sin is because we would not have known sin except through the law
A3. 7c-d Reason Paul can say we would not have known sin except through the law is because the law points out sin
A3a. 7c We would not have known covetousness (was sin)
A3b. 7d The Reason we would not have know covetousness was sin is because we didn’t have the law to say "You shall not covet."

B. The Means/Manner by which the law reveals sin is by highlighting evil desires
B1. 8a The Means by which sin produced in Paul evil desire is by taking opportunity afforded by the commandment
B2. 8b Sin produced in Paul all manner of evil desire.
B3. 8c The Reason sin produced desire by the prohibition of the law is because apart from the law sin was dead.

C. 9-11 The Result of the law highlighting sin’s evil desires is that it kills us (shows us worthy of death)

C1. 9a-c The Time when Paul was formerly alive was before he aware of his obligation to obey the law
C1a. 9a Paul was alive
C1b. 9b The Time when Paul was alive was once/formerly
C1c. 9c The Manner in which he was alive was without/apart from the law(pre-bar mitzvah?)

C2. 9d-f The Result of Paul embracing the law is that sin came to life and he died.
C2a. 9d The Time when sin came to life was when the commandment came
C2b. 9e Sin revived/came to life = vp
C2c. 9f The result of sin being brought to life is that Paul died

C3. 10-11 The Reason Paul can say he died/was dead is because sin deceived him and killed him using the commandment

C3a. 10a-c Paul found the live giving commandment to bring death.
10a The Thing which brought death was the commandment
10b The Manner of the commandment was that it was intended to bring life

11b Sin deceived Paul

C3b-2. 11c The Means by which sin killed Paul is by utilizing the commandment
11d Sin killed Paul

C4. 12 The Result of sin using the law to kill Paul is that the law is still holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

III. 13- The Reason Paul can say the law is good even though it appears an accomplice to death is because it unmasks sin…

A. 13a That which is good has not become death to Paul

B. 13a-d The Reason the law had not become death to Paul is because it only served as a spotlight
B1. 13b The Purpose of sin producing death in Paul is that it might appear as it really is (sin life ruining evil independence)
B2.. 13c Sin was producing death in Paul
B3. 13d The Means by which sin produced death in Paul was through what is good (the law pointing it out & judging it worthy of death)

C. 13e The Purpose of sin being unmasked is that it is seen as obviously bad.
C1. 13e The Means by which sin was magnified is through the commandment
C2. 13f Sin became exceedingly sinful

D. 14a- The Reason is Paul can say what’s good didn’t become death is because we know that the law is spiritual but Paul is carnal.
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

4a For we know (pft) that the law is spiritual,
14b but I am carnal, having been sold (pft) under sin.
15a For what I am doing,
15b I do not understand.
15c For what I will to do,
15d that I do not practice;
15e but what I hate,
15f that I do.
16a If, then, I do what I will not to do,
16b I agree with the law that it is good.
17a But now, it is no longer I who do it,
17b but sin that dwells in me.
18a For I know
18b that in me (that is, in my flesh)
18c nothing good dwells;
18d for to will
18e is present with me,
18f but how to perform what is good
18g I do not find.
19a For the good that I will to do,
19b I do not do;
19c but the evil I will not to do,
19d that I practice.
20a Now if I do what I will not to do,
20b it is no longer I who do it,
20c but sin that dwells in me.
21a I find then a law,
21b that evil is present with me,
21c the one who wills to do good.
22a For I delight in the law of God
22b according to the inward man.
23a But I see another law
22b in my members,
22c ……..warring against the law of my mind,
22d ……..and bringing me into captivity
22e to the law of sin
22f which is in my members.
24a O wretched man that I am!
24b Who will deliver me from this body of death?
25a I thank God——
25b through Jesus Christ our Lord!
25c So then, with the mind
25d I myself serve the law of God,
25e but with the flesh
25f the law of sin.

Romans 7b Outline

C. 16a-b The Result of inconsistent values and actions is that Paul affirms the goodness of the law.
C1. 16a The Reason Paul agrees that the law is good is because he does what he wills not to do (even though he does what is wrong, he doesn’t want to, because he wants to do what is good; therefore he’s agreeing with the goodness of the law)

II. 17-25 The Result of Paul’s carnal enslavement to sin is that needs the deliverance provided in Christ to serve God with mind and body.
