Colossians 3-4 Perfect and Complete in the Will of God

TMS Philippians 4:13 The Strength of Christ
4:13 (“11 Not that I speak in respect to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it. 12 I know how to be humbled, and I know also how to abound. In everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need.")

13 "I can do all things
through Christ,
Who strengthens me.”

Observations: 4:13 Sometimes doing what God wants seems impossible. However, God will always give us all we need to do His will if we are depending upon Him (Hebrews 13:21; 2 Corinthians 9:8). He is the source of supernatural strength necessary for living the Christian life (John 15:5). An abiding, dependent relationship with the Lord Jesus allows His Spirit/strength to flow into our lives and do all He calls us to do and be. That is not only the secret of accomplishment but also contentment. See context and comments on Philippians 4 for more.

Application: Christ will strengthen us to do His will if we faithfully depend upon Him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thanks that in You I always have all I need to live the life You desire for me; may I be faithful to walk through today with You. Amen.

Colossians 3-4 In the previous chapter (Colossians 2:12-13), Paul said believers were buried and raised with Christ (on the basis of their faith in the working of God), so they could live a new life. He now tells them how to live that life so they can be rewarded with the glory God has planned. Seeking our future glory gives us the motivation to sacrifice the glory of this life, and be transformed to live in love and wisdom. We can't please God by living like we used to; we need to live as He wants us to. See under Digging Deeper for an audio sermon on Living The Christian Life After The Cross.

Colossians 3 Seek Glory Above and Walk In Love
3:1 "If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with Him in glory.
5 Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry; 6 for which things’ sake the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. 7 You also once walked in those, when you lived in them;
8 but now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings, 10 and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in/by knowledge after the image of his Creator, 11 where there can’t be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondservant, freeman; but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly; in/by all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another; with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord. 17 Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through Him.
18 Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them.
20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.
22 Servants, obey in all things those who are your masters according to the flesh, not just when they are looking, as men pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God.
23 And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he who does wrong will be repaid for the wrong that he has done, and there is no partiality."

Observations: 3:1-4 Those raised with Christ are commanded (imperative) to seek as their chief ambition, the things that are above (where Christ is, ie, their eternal reward), not the temporal trinkets on earth. The right hand of the emperor is where the future king of a conquered territory sat at the victory banquet. Christ is seated in the position of honor and glory waiting to take up His Messianic rule in the future kingdom, which He will share with those faithful to Him. That is what we should seek. Those who will miss out on their inheritance will do so because they are disobediently seeking the stupid stuff of earth instead. The overwhelming testimony of the Scripture is that God doesn't bless those who are disobedient. Faithful obedience doesn't happen automatically, but is the result of a mindset. Therefore Paul tells the believers to set their minds on pleasing God, and being blessed by Him. This is parallel to his instruction to the Ephesians that they have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. But for those blessings to be experienced, believers need to please God (hence the need for writing the epistles). The reason Paul gives for believers obeying is because they have died to their old life and their new life is now bound up or hidden with Christ, as they are in union with Him. If that continues, when He, who is our life (source of every breath we take and action we do, as well as source of future power) is revealed (at His second coming), we who are in union with Him will also be revealed as sons of glory (Matthew 16:27; Matthew 19:28; Matthew 25:31-34; Hebrews 2:10; 1 Peter 1).
3:5-7 The means or manner in which believers set their minds and lives toward heavenly objectives is by putting to death the immoral desires and behaviors of their old life. Covetousness, a violation of the tenth commandment, is the desire for more (of that which gives temporal worth, value, and pleasure) and is equated with idolatry. Those believers who don't kill their temporal desires will wish they had come judgment day. Paul uses the coming judgment as the motivation for obedience. This is not a reference to unbelievers being tossed into the lake of fire, but of God's disobedient and displeasing children being judged for behaving badly (cf Ephesians 2:2; Ephesians 5:6 comments). Verse 7 clearly refers to the former behavior of his believing audience.
Ephesians 5:6 "Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience."
The reason we sin as believers is because we want to. The reason we want to is because we think that such behavior is beneficial to us. Even when we realize it isn't good for us, we engage in evil because we've developed evil habits. See “It Ain't Gonna Reign No More” on Truthbase.net for help in renewing your values and life. See exposition on Romans 8:13 on how to put to death the deeds of the body by the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:13 "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."
3:8-11 Not only are believers to put bad behaviors to death, they are to put off/remove self-centered attitudes and actions from their life as well, and put on/embody other-centered attitudes and actions. The items mentioned are necessary for Biblical Body building, the emphasis in what follows (cf Ephesians 4). The list in verse 8 is self explanatory (see Galatians 5 comments on the works of the flesh for elaboration). The last item, abusive or dishonorable speech is probably, in this context, putting others down to boost one's self-worth, which in reality, diminishes it in God's sight. Lying to others, to pridefully present a more positive perspective of oneself than reality warrants, is a sad self-deception. No one is fooled, except the liar. Paul tries to motivate his audience by saying that such behavior belongs to the old man, not the new man in Christ, which is being renewed into the image of Christ (see comments on Romans 12:1-2 for the renewal process). The new man is composed of renewed individuals who's identity is that of a Christian. What they were before is largely irrelevant. Christ, not ethnicity, religiosity, nor cultural nor social status is the basis of who they are now.
3:12-17 Just like old habits and identities don't go away unless we take appropriate action, God's chosen, holy and beloved children need to choose to learn and put on new behaviors in their interactions with each other. The list in verses 12-13 is also self-explanatory. You might want to think about how you've demonstrated each toward others in the past month. Christ forgave us without our asking (cf Luke 23:34), which is necessary to prevent bitterness (Hebrews 12:15) but brought us into fellowship with Himself when we acknowledged our wrong doing and repented. We are to forgive others, regardless of whether or not they repent, but we don't need to fellowship with them until they do (cf. Matthew 18 and 1 Corinthians 5 on church discipline). It is not in the best interest of a sinning believer to continue to sin against others. Love requires appropriate reproof and restoration. Walking in love is having our actions and attitudes guided by what is in the other person's best interest, not our comfort. If you are tempted to complain about the pain of loving others, remember how Christ loved you. Putting on love is the bond or belt which hold the relationships together. Verse 15 is usually cited out of context as applying to decision making, when in reality, doing God's will, especially involving difficult change can cause initial anxiety (cf Jesus in the Garden). The Colossian context is that of believers living in peace and harmony with each other as the Body of Christ. Like in Ephesians, the Colossians are to be a unified body (temple) in which God dwells. Being thankful for a fellowship of like-minded Christ followers in a self-centered world aids the unity. Letting the word of Christ (His teachings) dwell/abide in us is the key to being able to build up others with wise instruction and admonishment/warning. We speak the truth to each other, but sing with psalms, etc., to God. Such singing isn't just mouthing words, but that which flows from a heart pulsating with the grace of God. Not all who sing joyfully have a good relationship with God, but those who don't sing with their hearts, don't have a heart energized by His grace. In Ephesians Paul reached the climax of Body life in 5:21, submitting to each other in the fear of God. Here he says that whatever we do, in word or deed, should be enabled by a concern for the name/reputation/glory of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father through Him.
3:18-25 Paul now addresses the same three pairs of subordinated relationships as He did in Ephesians 5-6 (see comments there). The command to wives is in the middle voice, in which the subject does something for their own benefit (see 1 Peter 3 comments). “As is fitting” emphasizes the duty/obligation. Husbands are to love their wives, sacrificing themselves to do what is in their wife's best interest. “Bitterness” also has the meaning of “be irritated.” Children are to obey their parents in everything as the means of pleasing the Lord, who will watch out for those who please Him. Fathers are not to provoke their children to anger (KJV) so they won't be discouraged or disheartened. A father who is never satisfied or always angry with his children (because he didn't train them properly) breaks the spirit of the child. The goal is to break the will, and shape the spirit. See Parenting Resources on Truthbase.net and the synopsis in TOYL.
The bulk of Paul's comments concern servants and masters, because the idea of working for a reward is dominant in the epistle. Servants/employees are to do their work heartily as if they are serving the Lord. Worship is a response to revelation, so responding to this revelation by doing their work fo the Lord, turns it into worship. An employee is not a slave bound to a master. If an employee can't follow the Biblical instructions for work, nor fulfill their other Biblical responsibilities because of work, it's time to trust God for a job in which they can fulfill all their responsibilities. See the Work As Worship sermon on Truthbase.net. Note that this does not mean worshiping work. (Americans have been described as a people who worship work, work at play, and play at worship.) One isn't doing their work as worship nor for the Lord, if they neglect the other things the Lord has commanded, especially relationships and ministry. That would not be fearing God.
See TOYL for how to develop a Biblical balance. We should work not just to fulfill the minimum requirements, but strive to give more service than that for which we are compensated, as long as we don't neglect other responsibilities. Sometimes, people get their worth and value from giving their lives to get praise from their workplace, but lose out on getting praise from God. The person who works for the Lord's approval knows that the Lord will give them the reward of the inheritance. This is a great verse to show that inheritance is a reward, just as it was in the OT. Israel had to work to get and maintain the blessings in the Promised Land. The one who fails to work heartily as for the Lord, does what is wrong and will be repaid with loss of reward (1 Corinthians 3:15; 2 Corinthians 5:9-10). This is not justification by works, but glorification by works.

Application: Born again believers need to put away bad behavior and put on new attitudes and actions in order to live the new life which God rewards.

Prayer: God, thanks that You want what's best for me; help me do and be all that You desire. Amen.

Colossians 4 Walk in Wisdom and Be Perfect and Complete
4:1 "Masters, give to your servants that which is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, watching therein with thanksgiving; 3 praying together for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds; 4 that I may reveal it as I ought to speak.
5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
7 All my affairs will be made known to you by Tychicus, the beloved brother, faithful servant, and fellow bondservant in the Lord. 8 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts, 9 together with Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make known to you everything that is going on here. 10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, greets you, and Mark, the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you received commandments, "if he comes to you, receive him"), 11 and Jesus who is called Justus. These are my only fellow workers for the Kingdom of God who are of the circumcision, men who have been a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, salutes you, always striving for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. 13 For I testify about him, that he has great zeal for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis. 14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you. 15 Greet the brothers who are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the assembly that is in his house. 16 When this letter has been read among you, cause it to be read also in the assembly of the Laodiceans; and that you also read the letter from Laodicea. 17 Tell Archippus, "Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you fulfill it." 18 The salutation of me, Paul, with my own hand: remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen."

Observations: 4:1 This is an unfortunate verse division, which clearly belongs in the last chapter. Masters need to give to their employees what is just and fair. God hates injustice and judges those who engage in it.
4:2-4 Paul starts to conclude the epistle with a request for prayer, but reminds the Colossians to be ever vigilant and watchful in prayer against the attacks of the enemy. This is parallel to the end of the spiritual warfare section in Ephesians. This is the fifth admonition to be thankful. Thanksgiving acknowledges that God has given the blessing and circumstances one has, and fosters dependent trust for the future. If I'm aware that God has given all I have needed in the past, then I can trust Him for my present needs, as well as those of the future. Thankfulness also diminishes discontent. You can find a number of outlines on the topic on Truthbase.net, as well as a Biblical Survey of Prayer. Paul requests that they pray for God to open a door for him to boldly speak the mystery of Christ, that the Gentiles are equal heirs with the Jews in the promises of the Messiah. That message is why the Jews sought to kill him (see Acts) and why he was currently in prison. It's also why prayer is needed since the satanically motivated Jews sought to suppress the message.
4:5-6 Paul commands the believers to walk/live in wisdom (choosing the right objectives for their lives, as well as the right means of obtaining them) toward the unbelievers. The means of walking wisely is to redeem (buy back) the fleeting hours of each day by exchanging them for what has eternal value (see comments on Ephesians 5:16). The souls of others rank pretty high on the heavenly value scale. Verse 6 doesn't have a separate finite verb, but it modifies verse 5. The wise believer will learn to cultivate communication that is empowered by grace (God's power), seasoned with salt (used in Greek of wit, which makes people thirst for more), knowing how to respond to each individual person, according to what is appropriate and beneficial.
4:7-11 Paul turns attention to the visit of Tychicus and Onesimus which is for the purpose of sharing news and teaching of Paul, and receiving news about the Colossians for Paul. Note the common characteristic of faithfulness (the major criteria of our future judgment – see Semper Fi at the end of the TOYL booklet). Onesimus was a slave who had robbed his Colossian master Philemon, had met Paul, was converted, and sent back to Philemon with the eponymous epistle. Aristarchus was a companion of Paul on his missionary journey (Acts 19:29; 27:2). Verse 10 gives some insight into the split between Paul and Barnabas over John Mark, Barnabas' cousin in Acts 15:36-41. There were only two fellow Jews working with Paul for the inclusion of the Gentiles in the Kingdom which God promised in the OT (Isaiah 40; see comments on Matthew introduction).
4:12-16 Epaphras, at one time a fellow prisoner with Paul (Philemon 1:23) not only taught the Colossians (1:7) but fervently labored and fought for them in prayer that they would stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. This involves doing what is pleasing in His sight so as to receive the blessing He intends for His loyal and faithful saints. This is the goal of the Christian life on earth. It is not automatic, but a result of teaching to obey (Matthew 28:20) and prayerful ministry. Notice that it is so much more than getting sins forgiven. This passage is the one that tells us that Luke was a physician, and that Demas was a co-laborer. One of the saddest verses in the NT is 2 Timothy 4:10 which tells us that this companion and fellow laborer with Paul, forsook him, because he was seduced by and loved this present world. Not even Paul's teaching and prayers could save Demas from destroying his future. His fate is so much the worse, because, as Dr. Luke recorded, to whom much is given, much is required (Luke 12:48). Paul instructs the Colossians to swap letters with the lukewarm Laodiceans, who Christ said were on track to lose their glory/reward.
Revelation 3:16 “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' --- and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked ---18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."”
4:17-18 Paul ends with an admonition/encouragement to Archippus, a fellow-soldier (Philemon 1:12) who apparently had received a commission from the Lord as had Paul (1 Corinthians 15:3). Nothing else is known of him. The interesting thing is the function of the Body in encouraging such an individual to fulfill or bring to completion the responsibility/ministry the Lord had entrusted to him. Paul signs with his own hand, and asks them to remember his bonds (third reference - Colossians 4:3,10,18). The reminder is of his willingness to suffer for the benefit of others, as they should too. They had life because Christ was willing to suffer. They heard about life because Paul was willing to suffer. They were taught because Epaphras was willing to suffer. The route to glory is through suffering (see comments on Mark 10:45), so the Colossians should be willing to suffer for others on their route to their glorious inheritance. Paul ends with a shorter benediction, wishing them the blessing of grace.

Application: Life is short; make it count for eternity, by using every hour for God's pleasure and the benefit of others.

Prayer: God, may I be perfect and complete in all Your will, as You desire; show me what ever You want me to do, and help me trust You to bring it about. Amen.

Digging Deeper:

God in a nutshell: God will pour out His wrath on His disobedient children who seek to live for just this world rather than His will.

Build-a-Jesus: The Lord Jesus sits at the right hand of God awaiting the inauguration of His Messianic rule, when He will reward His faithful servants in whom His word dwells.

Us in a nutshell: We need to be transformed to be able to live as God desires; that involves choosing to put to death our old self-centered desires and habits, and putting on the Christ-like characteristics that enable us to minister to others.

Where to Go for More:

Matthew 23-25 End Time Parables

Matthew 23-25 End Time Parables

Psalm 119:41-48 Liv'n It, Lov'n It, and Shar'n It
Ps 119:41 VAU “Let your hesed/loyal covenantal love also come to me, Yahweh, your salvation, according to your word. 42 So I will have an answer for him who reproaches me, for I trust in your word. 43 Don’t snatch the word of truth out of my mouth, for I put my hope in your ordinances. 44 So I will obey your law continually, forever and ever.
45 I will walk in liberty/freedom, for I have sought your precepts. 46 I will also speak of your statutes before kings, and will not be disappointed. 47 I will delight myself in your commandments, because I love them. 48 I reach out my hands for your commandments, which I love. I will meditate on your statutes."

Observations: 119:41-44 The psalmist hopes and trusts in what God has revealed: His hesed/loyal covenantal love. Expecting God to fulfill his covenanted responsibilities to save His servant, the psalmist fulfills his responsibility to obey.
119:45-48 As a result of seeking and applying God's word (meditation=thinking through implications for applications), the psalmist lives in freedom, loves God's word, and shares it with others.
Application: Those who experience the liberating benefits of God's word, love it, and share it with others; those who don't share it probably haven't experienced it.
John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
Prayer: Lord, thanks that Your word has made such a difference in my life, freeing me from sin, and delighting my heart; may I seek opportunities to share my love of Your word with others. Amen.
Proverbs 27:11-12 Dangers to Joy
Pr 27:11 “Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart, then I can answer my reproacher. 12 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.“

Observations: 27:11 Wisdom results in joy to both the person who has acquired it, and those around him/her. The life of a wise child vindicates Biblical parenting. People who don't follow God nor His revelation will always rail against Biblical principles, particularly as they relate to parenting (as if God knows nothing about how to raise the creatures He's created). Compare the life of someone who is undisciplined and lives for the gratification of their selfish desires for temporal significance, sex, and success, with that of an other-centered individual who loves others with a view to eternal power, pleasure and possessions. Which brings more joy to parents and God?
27:12 A wise or prudent person has been trained to recognize or discern danger and take preventative action. The simple fool walks or runs right into danger and stupidly suffers, causing grief to those who love him/her.
Application: Know your danger areas, and take all prudent defensive action, from elimination, prevention, memorization, accountability, to fleeing.
Prayer: God, thanks for warning me in Your word of the dangers to joy, and for providing prescriptions for living happily ever after. Amen.

Matthew 23-25 In His last instruction to the multitudes and disciples, Jesus warns against false teaching and the judgments that will come at the end of the age so His followers will be blessed and rewarded rather than cursed and punished.

Matthew 23 Worthless Hypocrites Denounced
23:1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat. 3 All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do. 4 For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments, 6 and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men. 8 But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers. 9 Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you will be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. 14 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you obstruct/shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna as yourselves. 16 "Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 ’Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’ 19 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it. 21 He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells in it. 22 He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it. 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone. 24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel! 25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness. 26 You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also. 27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.
33 You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna? 34 Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation. 37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not! 38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’"

Observations: 23:1-12 You can learn from bad examples, both what not to do, and when they tell you what is true. It's not that hypocrites don't know the truth, often they do, but they don't do it. The sign of an evil parent, boss, or religious or civic official, is that they demand of others what they don't do themselves. The pathetic creatures described by Jesus have no basis for self-worth. They are not doing what pleases God, so they can't feel God's pleasure when they obey. Since we're made to crave His affirmation, they try to get if from others, doing the silliest things. To keep myself amused in the presence of fools, I view the prideful as monkeys in a zoo who go through bizarre pacing and routines all day long. Once, they did a behavior that got someone to toss them a treat, or they saw another monkey get rewarded. So, they repeat the action hoping for another peanut. They link together a bunch of bizarre behaviors, having learned that if they persist they'll eventually get lucky, because it happened before. It's a lot like dating. But real and enduring affirmation comes from God, which He bestows on those who do what is right in His sight, and He sees the heart. Being other-centered to see the real needs of others, and sacrificially and humbly serving them is about as Christlike as you can get (unless you're good on skipping over the seas). Paul in Acts 28:3 is a great example. But the Pharisees of Jesus' day, and ours, think that doing things so others see and think well of them, will give them the worth a value they crave. They're doubly wrong: people are fickle so being a slave to their opinion is just stupid; doing things to be seen by men forfeits your reward from your Heavenly Father (Mt 6:1). You can't serve two masters either (6:24). How have you humbled yourself lately to serve others?
Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus...”
23:13-33 Jesus recites the riot act to the hypocrites with vehemence worse than a viper's bite (which he also compares them to). Do you think He's the tinniest bit angry? How about sarcastic? So much for the meek and mild Jesus. There are a couple of points worth highlighting beyond the condemnation. The blind religious leaders kept people from “entering” the kingdom. Up until this point enter has had the connotation of taking possession, more than that of stepping over the threshold. Jesus is viewing the religious leaders as blocking the entrance although the possession meaning is still here; one has to enter to take possession, as the end of verse 14 indicates.
23:23 This verse deserves its own line, because it sums up the weightier matters of the law in a manner consonant with most ancient wisdom literature: justice, hesed/mercy, and a faithful relationship with God, as in Micah 6:8 (The LXX translates the Hebrew hesed as eleos which has a component of loyal and compelling concern for others.) The righteous ordering of society, real relationships with others, and a loyal relationship with God, comprise the good life.
23:26 Bonus note: this is the only other occurrence of the Greek word for “inside/within” Strongs #1787, which denotes the surface area enclosed by the walls of the cup, not the molecules of the walls of the cup. Why is this significant? Luke 17:21 is the only other occurrence, and the only verse (falsely) cited to support the false teaching that the Kingdom from the heavens is something in one's heart, rather than that promised in the OT. If you look at the context of Luke 17:21, we have the same wicked Pharisees who were rejecting Jesus there, as here. Surely Jesus was not saying that the kingdom was in their hearts?
23:33-39 The hypocrites will suffer the punishment of Gehenna (differs from the lake of fire, see previous comments). Despite their injustice and rebellion, Jesus (who gives a glimpse of His pre-incarnate state), often wanted/desired/willed to gather them under His protection, but they would/desired/willed not. Here is a perfectly clear example of man rebelliously exercising His free will against God's will, and winning (in the short-term). But wait, there's more! The Messiah pronounces judgment against the nation (house/dynasty of Israel left desolate), until they repent (Romans 11). They, as a nation, will see Him, when they become receptive and recite Psalm 118:26, as the crowds did a few days (and chapters) previously on His triumphal entry (Mt 21:8). Despite their evil rejection, God does not abandon Israel, but they will suffer the consequences of their choice to sin, until they repent. Wait a minute, is this the OT or NT?
Application: Seek worth and value in the sight of God, by living justly, loyally, and faithfully, and you'll not care about the hypocrites, nor be like them.
Prayer: God, thanks that I can do what is pleasing in Your sight; please guide me in learning and doing all You desire. Amen.

Matthew 24 Tribulation and Teaching
24:1 Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way. His disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple. 2 But he answered them, "You see all of these things, don’t you? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down." 3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming and of (the) end of the age?"
4 Jesus answered them, "Be careful that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren’t troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places. 8 But all these things are the beginning of birth pains. 9 Then they will deliver you up to oppression, and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake. 10 Then many will stumble, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another. 11 Many false prophets will arise, and will lead many astray. 12 Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end, the same will be saved. 14 This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come. 15 "When, therefore, you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take out things that are in his house. 18 Let him who is in the field not return back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are with child and to nursing mothers in those days! 20 Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath, 21 for then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be. 22 Unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.
23 "Then if any man tells you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or, ‘There,’ don’t believe it. 24 For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones. 25 "Behold, I have told you beforehand. 26 If therefore they tell you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ don’t go out; ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ don’t believe it. 27 For as the lightning flashes from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 For wherever the carcass is, there is where the vultures gather together. 29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; 30 and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
32 "Now from the fig tree learn this parable. When its branch has now become tender, and puts forth its leaves, you know that the summer is near. 33 Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34 Most certainly I tell you, this generation/nation will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 36 But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 "As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship, 39 and they didn’t know until the flood came, and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left; 41 two women grinding at the mill, one will be taken and one will be left. 42 Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 44 Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come. 45 "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has set over his household, to give them their food in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing so when he comes. 47 Most certainly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has. 48 But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards, 50 the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it, 51 and will cut him off, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There is where the weeping and grinding/gnashing of teeth will be.

Observations: 24:1-3 Jesus departs out of the temple (parallel to Ezekiel's vision) and sits on the Mount of Olives (on which Zech 14:4 says He will stand at His return). He foretells the destruction of the temple, signifying an end of temple worship as the Jews knew it. God would destroy the second temple and discipline His people, just as He had the first. He values obedience more than the finest religious building in the world. After the temple is destroyed, Judaism could no longer be practiced as specified in the OT. The disciples ask him two questions, when would the temple be destroyed and what what would be the sign of His coming and the end of the age (they viewed the coming as ending the present age). The word for the end of the “age/world” is “aion” which is usually incorrectly translated as eternal or forever (which is impossible to do in this context). It was never used in Greek literature of an indeterminate period of time (except in some of Plato's usages), and in the NT it almost always refers to a definite period of time, like the Messianic age (although the end of the next chapter might be an exception). The word for “end” is “sunteleia” which means summary fulfillment, or consummation. It is used almost exclusively by Matthew (cx Heb 9:26) to describe the concluding judgment of the age (Mt 13:39, 40, 49; 24:3; 28:20). Note that the next time the summary judgment is mentioned is in Mt 28:20, the last verse of the book. The rest of the references to “end” in this chapter are just “teleia” refering to an end goal or completion, without the “sun” prefix.
24:4-22 Jesus emphasizes the importance of not being deceived and going astray as a result of external events and false teaching (even that accompanied by miracles). The ones who endure to the end will be saved (in the glorification sense, since this can't be about justification by faith, nor deliverance; and the events parallel those of Mt 13:43, and elsewhere, where the righteous are rewarded). The gospel of the Kingdom (which is not heaven, but comes from the heavens as promised in the OT) will be preached in the whole world to all nations first. Then the abomination that causes desolation (see Daniel 8:13; 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 for details and timing), will come (in the middle of the Tribulation), and it's time to get out of town. This can't be the 167 BC appearance of Antiochus Epiphanes (which had already happened), nor is it fulfilled by Titus' destruction in AD 70 (since he didn't proclaim himself to be god, and by the time the Romans got to the temple most had already fled).
The greatest tribulation of all time can only be that of the future Tribulation, the final week of Daniel's prophesy, which will eclipse all others in extent and duration. The extended horrors of Hitler exceeded those of the AD 70 temple destruction (another point for the future tribulation). The days of doom accompanying the anti-Christ's persecution will be shortened for the sake of God's chosen people.
24:23-31 False christs and false prophets will be demonically energized to do miracles, signs, and wonders. Don't believe them. Those whose faith is based on anything other than the revealed word of God will be deceived. The coming of Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of Man, to rule over Israel from Jerusalem will be impossible to miss. It will be as visible as lightening that is seen by everyone. There will be the carnage prophesied by Nahum (3:3) and others; the sun and moon and stars will darken (Isa 13:10; 24:23; Joel 2:31), etc, then the sign (herald/authentication??; we'll know it when we see it) of the Son of Man will appear. Then, finally, it will be followed by the Lord Himself in His glory! Everyone will see it, and all who had rejected Him will mourn. His angels will gather His chosen/choice ones per Matthew 13, (and then the kingdom ensues).
24:32-41 Jesus now answers the other “when” question. The remark about the generation not passing away has led many to falsely conclude that all this had to have happened before all the people listening to Jesus had died. Well the events described have clearly not transpired, and the judgments like the days of Noah have not been carried out. A generation refers to a group of people of common descent, and is appropriately used of the Jews as a nation at times (and this is one of them, in light of the context; (cf. Mt 17:17 where Jesus is not just berating his contemporaries). No one knows the day or hour when the Messiah will return to judge and rule, but Jesus does say one can know when it is near, and to be on one's guard.
24:42-51 Those who are on their guard, and watching for the return of Christ and the resulting judgment of their works, will be wise and faithfully doing what Christ wants; and as a result, will be blessed, and rewarded with being set over (rulership/dominion/life) those who were less faithful. The evil servant will suffer loss. The translation “cut in pieces” is legitimate in some contexts, but clearly not here, because after the cutting, there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, which is pretty difficult to do if you're in more pieces than you have teeth (even if you only had two teeth). Scourging is suggested by some, but there is a better translation. He will be cut off from blessing, just like God promised the unfaithful in the OT, and his portion/inheritance (or place) will be with the hypocrites, where it's all tears and teeth. This is not the lake of fire for those who aren't justified, or don't know God, but the outer darkness, excluded from the light of the city, where unprofitable servants serve their time. See comments on 25:30.
Application: Don't be deceived by falsehood, nor let your service be diminished by the delay of Christ's second coming; it will happen as surely as did His first one did, and you won't miss it, but you could miss out on the party.
Prayer: Lord, I know that none of Your words will pass away, and that all You have said will be fulfilled; may I be wholeheartedly doing Your will when You return, or when I go to meet You. Amen.

Matthew 25 Discriminating Judgments
25:1 "Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 Those who were foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘What if there isn’t enough for us and you? You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Most certainly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you don’t know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
14 "For it is like a man, going into another country, who called his own servants, and entrusted his goods to them. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 In the same way, he also who got the two gained another two. 18 But he who received the one went away and dug in the earth, and hid his lord’s money. 19 "Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reconciled accounts with them. 20 He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents besides them.’ 21 "His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22 "He also who got the two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained another two talents besides them.’ 23 "His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 24 "He also who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter. 25 I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.’ 26 "But his lord answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I didn’t sow, and gather where I didn’t scatter. 27 You ought therefore to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back my own with interest. 28 Take away therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will be given, and he will have abundance, but from him who doesn’t have, even that which he has will be taken away. 30 Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
31 "But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. 36 I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’ 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink? 38 When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’ 40 "The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal/(of the age) fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ 44 "Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’ 45 "Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ 46 These will go away into eternal/(of the age) punishment, but the righteous into eternal/(of the age) life."

Observations: 25:1-13 The importance of being watchful (on guard) and ready is underscored in the parable of the ten virgins. Lamps could be a symbol for witness. (Oil as the HS is nice, but breaks down with the buy and sell part). In any interpretation, those who were ready experience the banquet feast of the delayed Bridegroom. Those who weren't ready were excluded. Again, this is not a justification by faith passage, but a reward passage, echoing that in Mt 7:21-23 from the “Lord, Lord” to the “I don't know you”.
25:14-30 The parable of the talents has both principles and parallels with reality.
  • The lord is going away, and will return;
  • He entrusts “his goods” to each of his servants, according to their ability;
  • He returns and demands an accounting of their stewardship;
  • He rewards them for what they've gained, based upon faithfulness not natural ability;
  • His reward is two-fold, being placed over many things, and entrance into his joy.
He commends the servants for five things:
  1. they've done something,
  2. they've done it well,
  3. they've been good,
  4. they've been faithful
  5. they've been a servant.
One can't hear “well done” unless they've done something. The same goes for the rest of the word. The wicked, lazy, fearful servant, is a servant to whom things were entrusted, but who didn't use what he had received for the master's benefit (in Luke 19:13 they're told to trade). Even if his master was as described, he should have done something advantageous to the master with what had been given him. He looses what had been given him, and it was given to the faithful one. This cannot be forgiveness for sin, nor justification by faith, but only reward. What was given to the faithful one was something similar to what he already had (so it can't be justification) and something which would have value in the future (additional glory or bestowal of the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Glory???). The unprofitable servant is tossed into the outer darkness (not into the lake of fire) where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 8:12 indicates that the unfaithful sons of the kingdom are in the darkness, and Luke 19 distinguishes the fate of the unprofitable from those of the enemies of the lord. The view most consistent with the occurrences of the phrase, and the rest of the teaching on the kingdom, is that the unprofitable servants are excluded from the light and glory during the kingdom, just like the unfaithful priests were excluded from the direct presence of God in the millennial temple (Ezek 44). The parable has nothing to do with forgiveness of sins, but is all about faithful service.
25:31-46 Jesus gets more explicit about the timing of this last judgment being that of the second coming of the Messiah, with glory and the angels, which was previously mentioned as the time when the Lord would reward faithful disciples. Rulership/dominion in the Millennial Kingdom would be part of the the reward for the twelve, as they sat on twelve thrones ruling over the tribes of Israel. Other disciples would be rewarded with rule over cities in return for their service (cf Luke 19:17). This judgment would usher in the Messiah's reign, as distinct from the Great White Throne Judgment (Rev 20:11-15) at the end of the kingdom before the eternal state. This judgment is of all nations (alive at the end of the Tribulation?), on the basis of how they treated the Messiah in the person of His “brothers” (faithful disciples/servants or all believing Jews). The sheep are those called “blessed by the Father” and receive the kingdom as an inheritance (reward) for service rendered (during the Tribulation) to the Jews. The goats are those who didn't serve. The judgment seems to go beyond that of exclusion from the benefits and reward of the kingdom, and is that of being cursed and suffering punishment in the fire prepared for the devil (diabolos = Hebrew for “goat”) and his angels, which is called the “lake of fire” in Revelation 19:20; 20:10,14-15. These last verses in Revelation make it clear that those cast into the lake of fire are those whose sins have not been forgiven and whose names are not written in the book of life. However, Matthew's (and Jesus') audience didn't have access to John's revelation. Not all the forgiven and healed serve; they are not unforgiven servants, but unprofitable servants (who wind up in outer darkness, not the lake of fire). The adjective aionios in Mt 25:41 & 46 (2x) means “of the age” but is usually translated as “eternal” or “everlasting” (which is usually incorrect, but here makes some sense). The lake of fire goes on and on, as in forever. However, most references to eternal life are clearly that of dominion or rulership in the Messianic Age (which if viewed as extending into the eternal state, would preserve the parallelism of an ”unending aionios” in 25:46). See comments on Revelation 20.
Application: Be a good steward of all that God has given you, using it to serve the Messiah, and His people, and you'll never have to worry about unfavorable judgment.
Prayer: Father, may I live to hear Your approval of "Well done, good, and faithful servant."  Amen.

Digging Deeper

God in a nutshell: God had planned to destroy the temple and its bogus, hypocritical worship as a result of the religious establishment's rejection of the Messiah, who will return to jugde all and rule in the Messianic/Millennial kingdom as promised in the OT.

Build-a-Jesus: Jesus doesn't mince words in denouncing hypocrites, especially those who lead others astray. He will return to judge and rule, as promised. He is the Lord of Glory.

Us in a nutshell: Only those faithful to the Lord are acknowledged and blessed by Him. The unfaithful (but forgiven) hypocrites will spend their time in the kingdom weeping and regretting the life they wasted.

Matthew 23
23:1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat. They make their phylacteries broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments, 6 and love the place of honour at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.
For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretence you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. 14 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter. 21 He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living in it. For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

Matthew 24
24:1 Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way. His disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple. 2 But he answered them, "You see all of these things, don’t you? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down." 3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?"
4 Jesus answered them, "Be careful that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray. 6 You will hear of wars and rumours of wars. 20 Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath, 21 for then there will be great oppression, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be. 29 But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; 30 and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky.
34 Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished. 48 But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards, 50 the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it, 51 and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

Matthew 25
39 When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’ 40 "The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ 44 "Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’ 45 "Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ 46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Jeremiah 16-20 The Potter Pays Back

Jeremiah 16-20 The Potter Pays Back

Psalm 85:1-13 Stopping the Vicious Cycle of Sin
Psalm 85:1 “ Yahweh, you have been favorable to Your land. You have restored the captivity of Jacob. 2 You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people. You have covered all their sin. Selah. 3 You have taken away all Your wrath. You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.
4 Restore us, God of our salvation, and cause Your indignation toward us to cease. 5 Will You be angry with us forever? Will You draw out Your anger to all generations? 6 Won’t You revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You? 7 Show us Your hesed/loyal love, Yahweh. Grant us Your salvation/deliverance.
8 I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak, for He will speak peace to His people, His saints; but let them not turn again to folly. 9 Surely His salvation is near those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land. 10 Hesed/loyal love and faithfulness meet together. Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth/faithfulness springs out of the earth. Righteousness has looked down from heaven. 12 Yes, Yahweh will give that which is good. Our land will yield its increase. 13 Righteousness goes before Him, and prepares the way for His steps.“

Observations: 85:1-3 The psalmist recalls that God has been favorable to the land of Israel, and restored/turned back (used five times 85:1,3,4,6,8) the people to the land, forgiven their iniquity and covered over their sin. Note the differences between each of the items. Most commentators think this refers to the return from the Babylonian captivity. God has also taken all of His wrath away and turned from the fierceness of His anger.
85:4-7 The psalmist asks God to restore the people. Some versions add “again,” thinking this is a new circumstance of sin that has aroused God's anger, and thus he appeals to God to repeat the forgiveness of 85:1-3. Another view is that in the first three verses, God has ceased the punishment or penalty of their sin (in reversing the captivity), but they are still reaping consequences of the ruptured relationship. Therefore he asks God to revive them personally so they can rejoice in their relationship with Him, living in hesed/covenantal loyalty.
85:8-13 Either way, the things individuals need to live in hesed/covenantal relationship with God are: listening to God, obeying what He said rather than returning to folly, living in fear of displeasing God, so His presence/glory can dwell with them. When people live in faithful hesed/loyal love towards God, righteousness, peace and faithfulness are demonstrated on the earth. Then God can bless once again.
Application: Avoid the vicious cycle of sin and judgment by fearing God and living in hesed with Him (do what He says). See Judges for Breaking Sin Cycles.
Prayer: God, You are the one who forgives and restores; may I live in righteous loyalty to You, so You can give what is good. Thanks. Amen.
Proverbs 21:1-4 Matters of the Heart
Pr 21:1 “The king's heart is in Yahweh's hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires. 2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but Yahweh weighs the hearts. 3 To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to Yahweh than sacrifice. 4 A high look, and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, is sin.”

Observations:
21:1 God can change hearts and does so with a purpose. See Pharaoh below.
21:2 Of course we think what we do is right, but God looks at the motives. See Scarab below under Digging Deeper.
21:3 God is not impressed with our ritual, but with our righteousness.
21:4 Doing our thing independently of God is sin (which isn't good).

Application: Evaluate your life and motives from God's perspective every day.

Prayer: God, I want to be acceptable and right in Your sight; change my heart so I desire what You desire for me.  Amen.

Jeremiah 16-20 These chapters depict the destruction awaiting those who depart from God and stubbornly refuse to hear His word and repent. God gives encouragement and incentives to obey and horrible consequences for continued rebellion. Jeremiah gives warnings, calls to repentance, and object lessons, but only reaps abuse and pain for speaking God's truth. Some famous verses in the beginnings of chapters 17 and 18 shed light on God's purposes and human responsibility.

Jeremiah 16 From Ruin to Rejoicing
16:1 The word of Yahweh came also to me, saying, 2 You shall not take a wife, neither shall you have sons or daughters, in this place. 3 For thus says Yahweh concerning the sons and concerning the daughters who are born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bore them, and concerning their fathers who became their father in this land: 4 They shall die grievous deaths: they shall not be lamented, neither shall they be buried; for I have taken away my peace from this people, says Yahweh, even hesed/loyal covenantal love and tender mercies. 6 Both great and small shall die in this land... 8 You shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and to drink. 9 For thus says Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.
10 It shall happen, when you shall show this people all these words, and they shall tell you, Why has Yahweh pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against Yahweh our God? 11 Then you shall tell them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, says Yahweh, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshiped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law; 12 and you have done evil more than your fathers; for, behold, you walk every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart, so that you don’t listen to me: 13 therefore will I cast you forth out of this land into the land that you have not known, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night; for I will show you no favor.
14 Therefore, behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that it shall no more be said, As Yahweh lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; 15 but, As Yahweh lives, who brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the countries where he had driven them. I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their fathers. 16 Behold, I will send for many fishermen, says Yahweh, and they shall fish them up; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks. 17 For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my face, neither is their iniquity concealed from my eyes. 18 First I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double, because they have polluted my land with the carcasses of their detestable things, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations. 19 Yahweh, my strength, and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of affliction, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth, and shall say, our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, vanity and things in which there is no profit. 20 Shall a man make to himself gods, which yet are no gods? 21 Therefore, behold, I will cause them to know, this once will I cause them to know my hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is Yahweh.

Observations: 16:1-9 Jeremiah is forbidden to marry and have children, because the inhabitants of Jerusalem will die in dishonor and become dung on the hills. There will be no lamenting nor celebrating because of the coming judgments. God will remove His peace and covenantal protection (hesed) from the land as a result of their rebellion (next section).
16:10-18 The people are so insensitive to God that they don't think they're doing anything wrong, when in fact they have forsaken Him and sinned to a greater degree than their fathers. Each rebelliously does whatever his evil heart wants, and doesn't listen to nor obey God. In depicting the ensuing judgment and punishment, God graciously inserts a promise of return from captivity. Those who read this in captivity would be encouraged to faithfulness and have hope.
16:19-21 Jeremiah responds with a little praise chorus, acknowledging that Yahweh is not only his strength and refuge, but that of the whole earth. The nations shall come to Yahweh, confessing that the gods they served are vain and profitless. When Yahweh destroys the city, He will cause Judah to know and acknowledge that the God they should have been hearing and worshiping is Yahweh, not Baal or Ashtoreth.
Application: Those who are sensitive to the true God will confess and forsake their sin and futile ways, and sing praises to the God who is their fortress and salvation.
Prayer: God, please cause me to see and forsake whatever is in my life that is displeasing to You and might incur Your judgment; then I will rejoice in You. Amen.

Jeremiah 17 Cursings and Blessings
17:1 The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the horns of your altars; 2 while their children remember their altars and their Asherim by the green trees on the high hills. 3 My mountain in the field, I will give your substance and all your treasures for a spoil, and your high places, because of sin, throughout all your borders. 4 You, even of yourself, shall discontinue from your heritage that I gave you; and I will cause you to serve your enemies in the land which you don’t know: for you have kindled a fire in my anger which shall burn forever.
5 Thus says Yahweh: Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart departs from Yahweh. 6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose hope/confidence Yahweh is. 8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat comes, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? 10 I, Yahweh, search the emotions/kidneys, I examine the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. 11 As the partridge that sits on eggs which she has not laid, so is he who gets riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days they shall leave him, and at his end he shall be a fool.
12 A glorious throne, set on high from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary. 13 Yahweh, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be disappointed. Those who depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken Yahweh, the spring of living waters. 14 Heal me, O Yahweh, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for you are my praise. 15 Behold, they tell me, Where is the word of Yahweh? let it come now. 16 As for me, I have not hurried from being a shepherd after you; neither have I desired the woeful day; you know: that which came out of my lips was before your face. 17 Don’t be a terror to me: you are my refuge in the day of evil. 18 Let them be disappointed who persecute me, but let not me be disappointed; let them be dismayed, but don’t let me be dismayed; bring on them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.
19 Thus said Yahweh to me: Go, and stand in the gate of the children of the people, through which the kings of Judah come in, and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem; 20 and tell them, Hear the word of Yahweh, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates: 21 Thus says Yahweh, Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; 22 neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day holy, neither do any work: but make the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers. 23 But they didn’t listen, neither turn their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, and might not receive instruction. 24 It shall happen, if you diligently listen to me, says Yahweh, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but to make the Sabbath day holy, to do no work therein; 25 then shall there enter in by the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall remain forever. 26 They shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places around Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the lowland, and from the hill country, and from the South, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meal offerings, and frankincense, and bringing sacrifices of thanksgiving, to the house of Yahweh. 27 But if you will not listen to me to make the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

Observations: 17:1-11 God gives two outcomes for His people: Depart from Him, and trust in finite humans and institutions, and you'll live in a spiritual desert and be destroyed. Continue in Him, trusting His word, and you'll be a fruitful tree experiencing prosperity regardless of the weather. God searches/examines the emotions (literally “kidneys”) and hearts to give to everyone the consequences of their actions. The uncircumcised/insensitive and untrained heart is inclined toward wickedness, rather than God's will, therefore it gets us into trouble. (“It's not my fault I have to blame someone/something for my failings.”) Those who prosper apart from God (as many do), are a temporary aberration in the eternal scheme of things.
17:12-18 Jeremiah offers a principle and a prayer: Those who depart from the spring of living water won't have life; May those who persecute him be dismayed and destroyed.
17:19-27 God tells Jeremiah to stand in the gate on the way to the temple and rebuke the people on their way to ritual worship for defiling the Sabbath (major command of the covenant; for their violation of it, they would go into captivity). But, they didn't want to listen, much less obey, yet God offers blessing and continuation of the Davidic Covenant (2Sam 7) if they would diligently listen and obey.
Application: Learn God's ways, align your heart with His word, and be blessed; or trust in your heart and don't listen to God, and be cursed. Hmmm, pretty obvious choice.
Prayer: All wise and knowing God, help me diligently listen to Your word, and incline my heart to trust and obey You, the Spring of living water. Amen.

Jeremiah 18 Potter Pays Back
18:1 The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words. 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was making a work on the wheels. 4 When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 5 Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 6 House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter? says Yahweh. Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel. 7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; 8 if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them. 9 There are times I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; 10 if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good, with which I said I would benefit them.
11 Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return you now everyone from his evil way, and amend your ways and your doings. 12 But they say, It is in vain; for we will walk after our own devices, and we will do everyone after the stubbornness of his evil heart. 13 Therefore thus says Yahweh: Ask now among the nations, who has heard such things; the virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing. 14 Shall the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? Shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up? 15 For my people have forgotten me, they have burned incense to false gods; and they have been made to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in byways, in a way not built up; 16 to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing; everyone who passes thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head. 17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.
18 Then they said, Come, and let us devise schemes against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. 19 Give heed to me, Yahweh, and listen to the voice of those who contend with me. 20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them. 21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, and their young men struck of the sword in battle. 22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when you shall bring a troop suddenly on them; for they have dug a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet. 23 Yet, Yahweh, you know all their counsel against me to kill me; don’t forgive their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from your sight; but let them be overthrown before you; deal you with them in the time of your anger.

Observations: 18:1-17 God compares Himself to a potter who can make and then remake a pot that is marred or flawed. God can and does change His plans for people and nations based upon their free will choices to obey or disobey. Verse 8 states clearly that if they repent and turn from their evil, He will relent and not send the promised judgment. That's because God had promised to bless obedience and curse disobedience. If they disobey, God moves into the promised cursing mode. If they obey, He moves into the promised blessing mode. Unfortunately, they ignored His call to repentance (18:11), and chose to walk in their stubborn stupidity (18:12). They forsook the relationship they had with Yahweh to follow false gods, and refused to return. So God will scatter and destroy them.
18:18-23 The evil institutional hierarchy conspires against Jeremiah to do him evil. This is a typical response, claiming they have truth, when all they do is cling to false tradition. Jesus and Paul, and most other prophets had the same problem. Jeremiah calls for God to judge them terminally.
Application: If we return to God, He returns to us in blessing; if we rebel, He will turn from us in sending judgment. Any questions?
Prayer: God, thanks that You are totally just, and will repay evil to evildoers, and good to those who do good in serving You; protect me from the lying hypocrites who don't know or do Your will, and recompense them accordingly. Thanks again. Amen.

Jeremiah 19 Breaking the Bottle
19:1 Thus said Yahweh, Go, and buy a potter’s earthen bottle, and take some of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests; 2 and go forth to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell you; 3 and say, Hear the word of Yahweh, kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus says Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring evil on this place, which whoever hears, his ears shall tingle. 4 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods, that they didn’t know, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah; and have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt offerings to Baal; which I didn’t command, nor spoke it, neither came it into my mind: 6 therefore, behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that this place shall no more be called Topheth, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of Slaughter. 7 I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life: and their dead bodies will I give to be food for the birds of the sky, and for the animals of the earth. 8 I will make this city an astonishment, and a hissing; everyone who passes thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues. 9 I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat everyone the flesh of his friend, in the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies, and those who seek their life, shall distress them.
10 Then you shall break the bottle in the sight of the men who go with you, 11 and shall tell them, Thus says Yahweh of Hosts: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, that can’t be made whole again; and they shall bury in Topheth, until there is no place to bury. 12 Thus will I do to this place, says Yahweh, and to its inhabitants, even making this city as Topheth: 13 and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, shall be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the hosts of the sky, and have poured out drink offerings to other gods. 14 Then came Jeremiah from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Yahweh’s house, and said to all the people: 15 Thus says Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it; because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.

Observations: 19:1-9 God tells Jeremiah to get a bottle and some elders to witness the next prophecy of judgment. Since Judah has forsaken Him to worship other gods and the host of heaven (stars), thus defiling the land, God will bring such a defiling judgment on them, that everyone who hears of it will be appalled. They will become cannibals during the distress of the siege.
19:10-15 Jeremiah is told to break the bottle to demonstrate the irreparable nature of their judgment, because they make their neck stiff (rebellious) so that they would not hear God's words.
Application: Stubborn stupidity is doubly stupid, missing out on God's blessing, and incurring irrevocable wrath.
Prayer: God, may my heart and ears always be sensitive to Your voice. Amen.

Jeremiah 20 Pain From False Prophets
20:1 Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in the house of Yahweh, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Then Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in the house of Yahweh. 3 It happened on the next day, that Pashhur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, Yahweh has not called your name Pashhur, but Magormissabib. 4 For thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself, and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall kill them with the sword. 5 Moreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all its gains, and all the precious things of it, yes, all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies; and they shall make them a prey, and take them, and carry them to Babylon. 6 You, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house shall go into captivity; and you shall come to Babylon, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.
(NET to 7-13) 7 Yahweh, you coerced me into being a prophet, and I allowed you to do it. You overcame my resistance and prevailed over me. Now I have become a constant laughingstock. Everyone ridicules me. 8 For whenever I prophesy, I must cry out, "Violence and destruction are coming!" This message from Yahweh has made me an object of continual insults and derision. 9 Sometimes I think, "I will make no mention of his message. I will not speak as his messenger any more." But then his message becomes like a fire locked up inside of me, burning in my heart and soul. I grow weary of trying to hold it in; I cannot contain it. 10 I hear many whispering words of intrigue against me. Those who would cause me terror are everywhere! They are saying, "Come on, let's publicly denounce him!" All my so-called friends are just watching for something that would lead to my downfall. They say, "Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over him and get our revenge on him. 11 But Yahweh is with me to help me like an awe-inspiring warrior. Therefore those who persecute me will fail and will not prevail over me. They will be thoroughly disgraced because they did not succeed. Their disgrace will never be forgotten. 12 O Yahweh who rules over all, you test and prove the righteous. You see into people's hearts and minds. Pay them back for what they have done because I trust you to vindicate my cause. 13 Sing to Yahweh! Praise Yahweh! For he rescues the oppressed from the clutches of evildoers.
14 Cursed is the day in which I was born: don’t let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. 15 Cursed is the man who brought news to my father, saying, A boy is born to you; making him very glad. 16 Let that man be as the cities which Yahweh overthrew, and didn’t repent: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime; 17 because he didn’t kill me from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great. 18 Why came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

Observations: 20:1-6 A leader of the ritual religionists heard Jeremiah proclaiming the word of God and responded by causing him to be beaten and put in torture stocks. The Hebrew word for “stocks” comes from a root that means “turn back on oneself” indicating a painful bending or distortion of the body. When released, Jeremiah says Yahweh changed his name from “Freedom” to “Surrounded by Terror”, and that he, and all the false prophets would die in Babylon.
20:7-13 Jeremiah laments his career choice because of the opposition he encounters, and decides to quit. But he can't keep quiet about God's word. He recognizes that Yahweh is with him, and his enemies have not prevailed, although they have made life difficult. He also recognizes that Yahweh tests the righteous and judges righteously, and winds up praising God for deliverance. Anyone who preaches and practices truth will be swimming upstream, surrounded by proud and wicked slime slithering downstream. Get used to it, and keep focused on God.
20:14-18 Slipping back into his melancholy, Jeremiah laments the day of his birth.
Application: Focusing on the promises and presence of God rather than problems eases pain.
Prayer: God, I realize that in standing with You, I will face the same rejection You experience from those who do Satan's will; may I rejoice in Your presence and promises more than my temporal comfort. Amen.

Digging Deeper:

God in a nutshell: God has purposed to bless His people if they obey Him, and curse them if they don't. Their choice. He calls them to repentance, and back to a relationship with Him, but they stubbornly refuse, thus setting up the cursing part of His plan. His sovereign rule is to bless or curse depending upon the response of individuals. It is clearly not arbitrary. God protects His servants not allowing their enemies to prevail, but allowing the servants to experiencing purifying pain. He will pay back the enemies.

Us in a nutshell: We have a choice to hear and obey, or refuse to hear and obey. Either course of action has consequences attached to it. We can make ourselves hear, or make ourselves not hear. Even though chosen by God to be His special people, we forfeit all His planned blessings by forgetting and forsaking Him to serve false gods. God's true servants must be prepared to find all their joy and comfort in the presence of God, because most people are opposed to truth.

Jeremiah 16
16:1 The word of Yahweh came also to me, saying, 2 You shall not take a wife, neither shall you have sons or daughters, in this place. 3 For thus says Yahweh concerning the sons and concerning the daughters who are born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bore them, and concerning their fathers who became their father in this land: 4 They shall die grievous deaths: they shall not be lamented, neither shall they be buried; they shall be as dung on the surface of the ground; and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the sky, and for the animals of the earth. 5 For thus says Yahweh, Don’t enter into the house of mourning, neither go to lament, neither bemoan them; for I have taken away my peace from this people, says Yahweh, even loving kindness and tender mercies. 6 Both great and small shall die in this land; they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them; 7 neither shall men break bread for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.
11 Then you shall tell them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, says Yahweh, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law; 12 and you have done evil more than your fathers; for, behold, you walk every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart, so that you don’t listen to me: 13 therefore will I cast you forth out of this land into the land that you have not known, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night; for I will show you no favour.

Jeremiah 17
5 Thus says Yahweh: Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from Yahweh. 6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose trust Yahweh is. 8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat comes, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? 10 I, Yahweh, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

Jeremiah 18
9 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; 10 if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good, with which I said I would benefit them.
18 Then they said, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet.

Jeremiah 19
12 Thus will I do to this place, says Yahweh, and to its inhabitants, even making this city as Topheth: 13 and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, shall be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the army of the sky, and have poured out drink offerings to other gods.

Jeremiah 20
20:1 Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in the house of Yahweh, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in the house of Yahweh.
7 Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded; you are stronger than I, and have prevailed: I am become a laughing-stock all the day, every one mocks me. 8 For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, Violence and destruction! because the word of Yahweh is made a reproach to me, and a derision, all the day. 9 If I say, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with forbearing, and I can’t. 10 For I have heard the defaming of many, terror on every side. Denounce, and we will denounce him, say all my familiar friends, those who watch for my fall; perhaps he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. 11 But Yahweh is with me as an awesome mighty one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail; they shall be utterly disappointed, because they have not dealt wisely, even with an everlasting dishonor which shall never be forgotten. 12 But, Yahweh of Hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance on them; for to you have I revealed my cause. 13 Sing to Yahweh, praise Yahweh; for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
18 Why came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
